The Babylon Village Arts Council (BVAC) will sponsor its first Babylon Village Art Walk on Saturday,September 19, 2020 from 11-3. In collaboration with the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce the Art Walk will celebrate the arts within the Village. This free community event will take participants on a stroll through picturesque Babylon Village with a map of the highlighted stops on the Art Walk, promoting both the artist and business. A ‘Where’s Warhol’ style family scavenger hunt will be a children’s component in which a dozen Andy Warhol characters will be hidden in windows at locations throughout the village. Permanent art fixtures such as Jack Jack’s J2X Abstract Art Gallery,Village Art and Frame as well as the Bayman statue by artist and sculptor Jose I. Fernandez will be featured on the walk. BVAC will set up a welcome station at Ooh la la Boutiques where maps can be picked up and there will be giveaways

5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement

1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.

When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. It’s tempting to purchase windows based on price alone, but replacement windows are often a decision that only has to be made once or twice for the life of the home. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions. 5. Prepare for installation. Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Plan for one to two days of installation, advises Andersen Windows and Doors. Ways to Make Your Yard a Safe Haven for Beautiful Birds

Fortunately, there’s an easy action you can take to prevent this from happening, and it is to apply decals that reﬂect ultraviolet sunlight to your home’s windows, particularly those windows that are highly reﬂective of open sky. Doing so has been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the ﬂue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Lastly, if you would like to volunteer, you can! 18th Annual Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival Streaming Online For 2020

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, in cooperation with Suffolk County and the Bluegrass Club of Long Island, is pleased to announce the 18th Annual Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival. Due to ongoing health concerns, this year’s festival will be presented online, featuring a series of six Saturday night concerts beginning September 26, 2020, and five Wednesday night workshops beginning September 30th. BACCA’s Executive Director, Liz Mirarchi, stated, “We are grateful for the support of Suffolk County, ensuring

that even during this difficult time we are able to continue the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival into its 18th year. With their help, we can promote our local artists and share their music in a way that is both safe and accessible.” The Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival is a celebration of traditional Bluegrass, Americana and Roots Music. The series will be shown on the BACCA YouTube channel, which can be accessed by searching YouTube for Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and clicking

on the “Subscribe” button. Although there is no fee for viewing or participating in the broadcasts, BACCA will provide an option for viewers to make a donation during the concerts and workshops. The contributions will then be used to support arts and cultural events on Long Island through BACCA’s programming. Our 2020 Line-Up features local and regional acts as well as national touring artists. The Saturday evening shows will be presented as prerecorded concerts, but each will be paired with live commentary by the band

members via the Zoom platform, and an interactive feature which will allow the viewers to ask questions and comment in real time. The concerts have been recorded at various locations on Long Island, showing off some of the beautiful and diverse places available to our residents. Sometimes we forget the really important things in life. Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year-old asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Nana gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!” Hearing this, my grandson burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my grandson asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already.” - Author Unknown-
