The Babylon JuniorSenior High School recently hosted an informative orientation session for the incoming seventh grade students in preparation for another successful school year come Sept. 5. Students and their families were first invited into Rowe Hall for a welcoming presentation delivered by Babylon Junior-Senior High School Principal Al Cirone, who was joined by a number of

district administrators who were on hand to further assist with any questions the community may have. Additionally, studentrepresentatives from both the junior and senior high school student councils were in attendance to offer valuable advice as to what the students will be able to look forward to throughout the school year, such as homecoming, the “Souper Bowl of Caring” and the French talent show. Additionally, they

encouraged the incoming students to look into opportunities such as the various clubs and activities offered at the school. At the conclusion of the Rowe Hall presentation, families participated in a question-and-answer session as the incoming students were broken up into groups to further explore the school halls and engage in icebreaker activities within the classrooms hosted by the student council members.

Kicking off the 20192020 school year on Sept. 4, students in the West Babylon School District were all smiles as they entered exited the buses and entered their respective buildings. Students spent the day reconnecting with friends, getting acquainted with their new teachers, schedules and, in some cases, buildings and lockers. Sixth graders and freshmen toured their new buildings, received

their schedule and tried out their lockers prior to the start of opening day. Kindergarten students became acquainted with their new building and participated in some icebreaker activities to connect with their classmates. During the summer months, the district’s facilities were being prepared for the new school year. When students entered their buildings, there were new door

While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families.

• Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. • If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

The Babylon School District is thrilled to announce that Babylon Junior-Senior High School Junior Jaden Rupolo was selected to be a ball person for the U.S. Open currently taking place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center through early September. Jaden, who began playing tennis in the eighth grade, currently plays on Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s varsity tennis team. In order to be selected as a ball person for the 2019 U.S. Open, Jaden went through a rigorous selection process. More than 500 hopefuls from 15 states tried out, and out of that amount, only 150 individuals were selected to advance, including Jaden himself. During the tryout and callback rounds, the officials simulated what would be required of him during a match, such as retrieving the ball from the

net, rolling it to the other ball person and tossing it to the players. “As an avid tennis player, it’s an honor to be a ball person at the U.S. Open,” said Jaden. “I knew going into this process that the odds of making it were slim, but I am so glad I made the cut; it’s very exciting to be on the same court with the greatest tennis players in the world.”

It is Jaden’s goal to earn a tennis scholarship in order to further pursue both his studies and love for the sport at the collegiate level. Starting in the fall, he will go back to training five times a week in an effort to continue to improve his game. He also plans on competing in local U.S. Tennis Association tournaments.

The Beauty Of The Village Further expanding upon their robust artistic talents, students from the Babylon-Junior Senior High School hosted a “Babylon Book” exhibition and artist reception at the

Babylon Old Town Hall in early August. After taking a walking tour of the Village of Babylon, the students recreated the beautiful sights in order to create an illustrated version of the

area. The students who had work featured were from both Cheryl Schweider’s and Patricia Stork’s art classes.

Principal Steven Goldberg also attended the meet and greet. “Ms. Fretto’s K-6 experience as an elementary educator, elementary reading specialist and acting assistant principal in the New Hyde Park – Garden City Park School District set her apart and will pair well with our ever-growing quest for excellence,” said Mrs. Rozzi. “We welcome her warmly to the Babylon professional family of educators.” Ms. Fretto comes to the Babylon School District from the New Hyde Park – Garden City Park Union Free School District, where she was employed for 10 years as

both an administrator and educator. During her time spent there, she served as a classroom teacher across multiple grade levels, and enhanced the literary talents of students as a reading specialist. Ms. Fretto holds a Master of Science in literacy degree from Queens College, along with a Bachelor of Science in childhood education grades 1-6 degree from Molloy College.
