According to Lindblom, seven locally-based educators earned a University badge in the newly-created ‘Spanish Language for Educators’ course – SPD’s first badge-related program – two 24-hour, non-credit courses that thoroughly immersed participants in school-related Spanish vocabulary. Beginning this fall, SPD is offering university badges in several businessrelated areas, including three in finance and two in human resource management. Another University Badge is offered in higher education advising and counseling. University badges will also be offered in special education, middle school teaching, diverse literature, Long Island coastal studies, and more. THINKING OF BUYING OR SELLING?
Turning Pro By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it
into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder
why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.
SCIENCE FICTION IN THE SPOTLIGHT SUBMITTED BY: JENNIFER FURST, AGE 15, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL Scientists still don’t know how it happened, if it was a disease or genetic mutation... In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.
In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing
a titanium baby. Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms. Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory. What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war. It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, BACCA will be hosting the annual Harvest Moon Gala on Thursday, October 15th, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Chateau La Mer in Lindenhurst. BACCA is proud to be honoring Dan Lauria, this year’s recipient of the Senator Owen H. Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award. All are welcome to this entertaining fundraiser. Tickets are $75 per person and include dinner and dessert, including beer, wine and soda. There will also be musical entertainment and an art exhibition. Dan Lauria is recently coming off a successful NY run of Dinner with the Boys, a play he wrote and also starred in, along with Ray Abruzzo and Richard Zavaglia. Dan has appeared as a guest star in over seventy television episodic programs and
more than twenty Movie Of The Week productions. He has a score of film credits which include, Stakeout, Another Stakeout, and the commercial blockbuster, Independence Day and the Frank Miller production of Will Esiner’s The Spirit. Dan was also in the cult comedy: Alien Trespass. Dan is a very familiar face to the off-off, off and regional theater scene, having performed, written or directed over 50 professional stage productions. In 2010/2011 Dan was seen on Broadway as the legendary coach Vince Lombardi in the long running production of Lombardi, directed by Mr. Thomas Kail, with the beautiful and talented Judith Light playing Marie Lombardi. Dan returned to Broadway in the 2013 and the 2014 production of the Tony nominated: A Christmas Story: The
Musical directed by John Rando. Dan has performed The Guys by Ann Nelson both in NYC and on the road with his dear friend, the wonderful, Ms. Wendie Malik. The Guys is a tribute to the brave firemen who lost their lives at the WTC on 9/11 and it’s a play that Dan is honored to be a part of. Dan is most recognized as the Dad on the highly acclaimed Emmy winning, ABC television show, The Wonder Years. Hunger Action Day Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Randi Dresner, President & CEO of Island Harvest, and Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency personnel to highlight September 3rd as Hunger Action Day and September as Hunger Action Month. In honor of Hunger Action Day, Suffolk County donated over 36,950 Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) to Island Harvest to assist the organization with providing meals to over 316,000 Long Islanders on a yearly basis. “I am proud that Suffolk County has partnered with Island Harvest and a host of not-for-profit
agencies across Suffolk County to distribute more than 51,000 MRE’s to organizations to assist them in serving those in need in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all residents of Suffolk County to take part in Hunger Action Month as it provides an opportunity to join a movement that has a real and lasting impact on efforts to feed more Long Islanders than ever before.” “Island Harvest is grateful for the cooperation and continued support of County Executive Bellone and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency

During the Babylon Citizens Council of the Arts Teen Theatre Awards on June 12th, the district’s production of The Wizard of Oz won the best musical award. Each year, B.A.C.C.A. awards students in The Town of Babylon for outstanding performances in their high school theatre productions. West Babylon students were judged among nine other school districts. In
addition to Best Musical, Alexa Lucchesse (Dorothy) received the award for Outstanding Female Vocal performance by an Actress in a leading role; Angeline Miller (Wicked Witch) was awarded outstanding performance by an actress in a featured role. In addition the production also won Best stage Crew- Kyle Garcia, Kyle Henshaw, Joey Partain, and Joey Valenti.

North Babylon School District welcomed new and returning students, teachers and administrators excited for the start of the 2015-2016 year on September 1st. Students arrived at each of the seven schools eager to meet their new teachers, engage in academic dialogue, reconnect with their peers and continue on their paths to success. Staff members at each elementary school warmly welcomed students off of
their school buses or with their parents, and the classes of 2016 and 2020 began their final years at North Babylon High School and Robert Moses Middle School, respectively. Throughout the day, Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Educational Operations Dr. Judith Marino, Deputy Superintendent Salvatore Carambia and Assistant Superintendent
for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Mariana Ristea visited each school to personally welcome students and wish them the best of luck in their classes. Making the Transition To help introduce the new surroundings for incoming seventhgraders, district and Junior-Senior High School administrators - along with student volunteers - held a seventh-grade orientation day on August 27th. The incoming students, accompanied by parents and guardians, gathered in the auditorium before breaking off for individual group workshops run
by members of the high school student council and other volunteers from the older grades. “Transitioning from one school to another can be an intimidating experience,” said Superintendent Linda Rozzi. “But with this orientation and the wonderful work of our upper class volunteers, our incoming seventhgraders will be at ease and well prepared. This
was a wonderful morning to spend with these new students.” The student-run workshops included a video tour of the school, an introduction to the many clubs and extracurricular activities and information for intramural sports. The students also got a chance to locate and open their assigned lockers.
