Booster Club Golf Outing

AGENT OF THE MONTH

he Babylon Athletic Booster Club held its Golf Outing at Bergen Point. Over 74 golfers participated in this year’s event. All the money raised goes to support the student athletes in the Babylon sports programs. Prizes were awarded for top golfers and the winning foursome. Contests included closest to the keg and beat the pro. Landing 9 inches from the second hole kept one golfer from becoming a winner as well.

Booster Club Golf Outing

On Thursday, July 21st, the Babylon Athletic Booster Club held its second annual golf outing at the Bergen Point Golf Club. Over 74 golfers participated in this year’s event. All the monies raised go to support the student athletes in the Babylon sports programs. Prizes were awarded for top golfers and the winning foursome. Contests included closest to the keg and beat the pro. Landing a 9 inches from the Second Hole kept one golfer from becoming a hole in one car

winner as well. The event culminated with the dinner event and the presentation of the Ernie Busch Scholarship award to two Babylon Graduates heading off to college. This year’s winners were Megan Neary and Brian Boehm. The winners each received scholarship money to help defray the costs of their college expenses. Over the past few years the Booster Club has been able to purchase equipment for all the sports teams including two Scoreboards

50th Anniversary The 2016-2017 school year marks the 50th year milestone in the history of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School. The school was the first of four co-ed diocesan high schools dedicated on September 8th, 1966 by the then Bishop of Rockville Centre, Walter Kellenberg. During this school year, St. John’s will host a variety of events to celebrate its history including the unveiling of a new library and technology center, an Athletic Hall of Fame Induction on October 9th, an Evening in Red and White Celebration on November 19th, and an outdoor mass to start the school year. The opening of school mass will be held on September 9th and will be celebrated by the school’s chaplain, Fr. Robert Ketchum and concelebrated with St. John’s graduate and Vicar for the diocese, Bishop Robert Brennan.

At the mass, they will join the school community in welcoming the freshman class, the newest members of the school, who are to become the 50th graduating class, the Class of 2020, in just four short years. “We are thrilled to begin this school year with a 50th anniversary celebration of rededication and prayer. It will be a great year of remembrance of our history and appreciation for our school community that continues to bring life to many!” stated Principal Nan Doherty.

Officer Honored Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, and Clerk Carol Quirk to honor NYPD Officer Theresa Callahan, of North Babylon for her selfless acts in the line of duty. Officer Callahan, who serves in the 103rd Precinct in Queens, was recently featured in a PIX11 news story which highlighted

her friendship with two young siblings who live in a Jamaica homeless shelter. In the short time she has known Amani and Anthony, Officer Callahan has played an instrumental role in their lives - from sponsoring a Christmas Toy Drive for the entire shelter, to helping their father look for work, to throwing a surprise 8th birthday party for Amani in the shelter’s park. When

asked why she does this, Officer Callahan simply replies: “Because I can.” Supervisor Schaffer presented Officer Callahan with an official Certificate of Appreciation for her acts of kindness and for proudly representing the Town of Babylon community. Saratoga Summers This is the time of year, in late summer, when all thoughts point north – to Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility. My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own. Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you

endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes. If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres

throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts. Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love. Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds. Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.
