he Sea Explorers Marine Camp was recently held at the Sport Fishing Education Center in Babylon, Cedar Beach Marina. The campers, who attend this camp from communities throughout western Suffolk, discovered amazing creatures living in our local oceans, bays, and salt marshes as they handled marine animals in their touch tanks, participated in beach activities and games and seined the salt marshes.

Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet. Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.

We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what? To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming? As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season. That said, the one regret I have about summer

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently honored North Babylon resident and professional basketball player Bria Hartley by presenting her with the key to the town - only the fifth time this honor has been presented. Bria has displayed excellence on the court as a member of the North Babylon Bulldogs, the UCONN Huskies, and now

as a member of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Bria Hartley attended North Babylon High School, but started playing on the varsity team while she was still in eighth grade. She continued to be a starter throughout her four years of high school. During that time, the North Babylon Bulldogs had an outstanding record of 81 wins and 13 losses. After high school she was recruited by the UCONN Huskies, where

she continued to show her excellence on the court - holding the fourth best record for most assists and points scored in a year for a UCONN senior. Bria was a driving force in UCONN’s back-to-back National Championship victories in 2013 and 2014 and was selected seventh overall in the 2014 WNBA Draft, where she now plays for the Washington Mystics.

freely, the dunk tank was kept in action, and the raffle prizes were more appealing than ever. Thousands of dollars for Lindenhurst High School students was raised by the 56th Annual Larry Troiano Memorial Steak Fry, sponsored by the Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club.

Since the inception of the scholarship program in 1961, the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst has awarded a total of $413,400 of such scholarships to 248 recipients.

The event was held at Fireman’s Park, where participants enjoyed food, music and raffles. High School Key Club members assisted in making the event a success.

Honoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration beginning this fall and culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony next May. The Suffolk County Community College School of Nursing boasts more than 7,100 alumni, is the largest program in New York State and the sixth largest in the nation. The School of Nursing is asking all alumni to contact the College to become part of a celebration leading up to the 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th, 2015. Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. However, although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation to take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation dies occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains”, as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body. An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to the dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be proper final disposition for those remains. Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to contact one of the priests if you have further questions about it.

The new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital will be completed in 2016; it will be housed in a new 10-level Hospital Pavilion adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital The expansion will feature a pediatric intensive care unit, adolescent unit, procedure suite, hematology/oncology unit, medical/surgical units and

modern patient and family amenities; new adult critical care and cardiac care units; an expanded imaging department; and increased support space throughout.

The Hospital has a building fund goal of $25,000,000; so far, a total of $9,980,670 has been donated to the building fund.
