Folders and filing systems aside, though, the true character is represented by the many knick-knacks and personal touches which accent my area. Only now, as I prepare to pack up my belongings at the close of the month {a task I intend to put off until the very last moment, as we can’t have things looking “empty” for even a day}, have I really taken the time to appreciate all the memories associated with these special tokens accumulated through the years. There is the mug given to me by my mentor and very special friend Peter, who saw fit to take me under his wing from day one and gently nudge me into the spotlight with what would become the makings of this very column. There is the silk ﬂoral arrangement from my Mom, with the hand-written note, “A little touch of springtime for your desk, along with wishes for many happy days at your new

The stories that unfold in the space of a writer’s study, the objects chosen to watch over a desk, the books selected to sit on the shelves, all weave a web of echoes and reflections of meanings and affections, that lend a visitor the illusion that something of the owner of this space lives on between these walls, even if the owner is no more. {Alberto Manguel} From the day I began working at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers some 13-plus years ago, my desk and the meticulousness with which I chose to decorate, maintain and arrange it has been a topic of some fascination among my coworkers, the joke being that if someone dared to move a pencil or paper clip even a fraction of an inch, I would notice immediately. While this may be a bit extreme, the characterization is pretty darn close. I have always subscribed to the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” mostly because I felt the sense of

There is the photo of my friend Rose on our very first trip to Adventureland, her face a mixture of exhilaration and horror, as we careened down the famous log ﬂume, holding on for dear life. And of course, there is the framed plate of my 500th column, published on March 11th, 2015, a testament to the longevity I never imagined I or the column - would achieve when I set foot in our old office on May 2nd, 2005. One move and another small renovation later, the layout of my desk and office space may have changed, but the memories have traveled with me, giving rise to many new ones made along the way. In just a few short weeks, the desk will be empty, the personal touches gone for good, relegated to a storage box in the back seat of my car for a time - until a better, more permanent home can be found. Things, as we know, are replaceable. It is the stories behind them which live on forever.

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and other special guests recently attended a Court of Honor ceremony to congratulate Michael Quinn on becoming an Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest achievable rank in the Boy Scout organization. His Eagle project was to donate Smile Bags for children at Cohen’s Children’s Center. Michael organized two fundraising events to collect the money needed to pack each bag with small gifts and activities for the children. The actual Smile bags were provided by The Amanda Styles Cirelli Foundation, which was created in memory of Amanda, who passed away at the young age of 29 after her courageous battle with cancer. With help from members of his troop and the North Babylon community, he provided

CREMATION AND THE CATHOLIC FUNERAL RITES PART THREE This is the third part of a series about the changes in the Catholic funeral rites as they relate to cremation. There are two points on which I would like to focus in this article. The first is the adamant statement made by the church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body, and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Therefore, some final resting place for the Cremated Remains must be made. The scattering of ashes over land or sea is NOT an acceptable practice for deceased memebers of the Catholic Church. Nor is leaving them in the care of the funeral home nor is it acceptable to keep Cremated Remains of a person at home on the mantle or in the garage. The Cremated Remains of a person should be interred in the ground or entombed in a niche (a mausoleum for cremated remains) in a suitable urn.

The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious service prior to the cremation. It simply means that instead of a burial or entombment in a mausoleum, the deceased is cremated, but first you can have a wake if desired, religious services, and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underline the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgement concerning the choice that nearly 20% of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological, or family factors, on occasion, make cremation the only feasible choice.

members started on an ambitious hike starting in Brooklyn Atlantic Terminal, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and to Battery Park in the pouring rain. The sun finally came out for our boat trip to Liberty Island where the boys learned about the statue. Then we went to Ellis Island for a history of immigration to the United States. Many boys researched their ancestry and found family names on the wall of immigrants. After our adventure through history the scouts continued their hike from Battery Park over the Highline to Penn Station. The entire troop was delighted to have pizza and drinks delivered to them in Highline Park by On August 4th, North adventure to the Statue Highline Pizzeria. It was a Babylon BSA Troop 399 of Liberty. 19 scouts and challenging 17 mile hike embarked on a NYC 21 leaders and family but the troop rose to the

challenge. Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, and a member of the Sagtikos District of BSA’s Suffolk County Council. It is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club. Originally chartered in 1975, Troop 399 has been serving the

Accepting Applications Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program for undergraduate and graduate students seeking internship opportunities in county government. The new program offers real world experience for students interested in gaining professional public

sector experience and a true understanding of the mechanics outside of the classroom. Students must submit applications no later than August 24th. “An internship with the Suffolk County Government provides firsthand, invaluable experience in public service,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve

Bellone. “Being exposed to real world innergovernment situations and working closely with the teams in our departments is an education in and of itself.” This program will provide students with an opportunity to interact with Suffolk County’s residents and key community groups, including exposure

to the inner workings of County department and agencies. Over the course of an internship, interns will have the opportunity to liaise with staff on key initiatives and projects to enhance the Suffolk community. Students interested in this program should be detail-orientated professionals, with strong time management and

communication skills. The Suffolk County Leaders in Training Program is a selective program that selects and places candidates within multiple agencies or Departments within Suffolk County government. Interns are required to work a minimum 15 hours per week, must be 18 or older
