IS CREMATION THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s but regretted Another organization you can becomewishes involved with:the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

scholarship has eliminated some of the sacrifices my family and I make to pursue my education, giving us peace of mind. This Scholarship Committee has given me their personal investment and good faith into my future of becoming a nurse. My education will allow me to build on existing skills in caring for my family and community. I hope to have the opportunity to inspire future recipients, and advocate the committee’s platform, in steadily encouraging and honoring resilient smart women, in need.” The second recipient of the award will be announced at a holiday event later this winter. In addition to announcing one of the winners for the 2019 scholarship, Scholarship Committee Chair Melissa Muma shared that in 2020 the club will be expanding the opportunity for applicants to include students who are graduating from high schools. Muma stated, “This decision

was made possible as a result of the tremendous support of the Babylon Village community. We are fortunate to live in such an altruistic town and look forward to broadening the BVWC reach within our community.” About the Babylon Village Women’s Club Founded in 1991, the BVWC was created in order to focus upon the needs of the local community. Since that time the club has expanded its mission to provide scholarships

North Babylon High School students crafted their artistic talents this summer by participating in VIS101. This is a SUNY Farmingdale course that’s part of the University in the High School program. For the program, students earned three college credits for a fraction of the cost they would pay in college. Those who participated included incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors. Some activities included students pairing up and drawing each other, while other activities included drawing subjects in their surroundings such as leaves and flowers. Their studies focused on observing lines, shapes, forms and values and drawing directly on toned paper.
