t. Joseph’s Choir, under the direction Dr. Marie Drohan, hosted a 10-day parish Centennial Concert Tour to the Czeck Republic, Germany and Austria, notably Vienna and Salzburg, in late July of this year. The Church of St. Joseph began their Centennial Celebration June of 2012, culminating in a successful concert tour a year later. The choir also sang at the Vienna Concert Hall and the Benedictine Melk Abbey in Prague.

The Annual Snapper Derby Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Captree State Park. The purpose of this event is to encourage children to fish; however all ages are welcome. There is no entry fee; however, a Vehicle Use fee will be in effect. Fishing locations are throughout all of Captree State Park. Equipment prizes for 1st through 5th places will be awarded in the following age groups: 7 years old and younger; 8-12 years of age and 1316 years of age. Prizes will be presented at the awards ceremony, and winners must be present to receive prize. Snappers will be weighed alive, and live release is encouraged. St. Joseph’s Choir, under the direction Dr. Marie Drohan hosted a 10-day parish Centennial Concert Tour to the Czeck Republic, Germany and Austria, notably Vienna and Salzburg in late July of this year. The Church of St. Joseph began their Centennial Celebration June of 2012, culminating into a successful concert tour a year later. A Centennial Concert at St. Joseph’s on June 8th comprised the music program presented in the two concerts aboard. Parishioners were also invited along with
members of the Babylon United Methodist Choir. The choir sang concerts at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, St. Nicholas on the Square in Prague and sang Mozart’s Credo Mass with the Salzburg Cathedral Choir and Orchestra at the high mass. St. Joseph’s very own Fr. Seth N. ArwoDoqu con-celebrated the mass in German. Professor Janos Czifras, the Cathedral music director and well-known conductor commended Dr. Drohan and the Choir on their excellent preparation and their professionalism.
The choir also had the opportunity to sing at the Vienna Concert Hall and the Benedictine Melk Abbey in Prague. The yearly Salzburg Festival took place during this tour and the marvelous façade of the Salzburg Cathedral serves as a backdrop for the performances. The patron saints of the Cathedral are Saints Virgil and Rupert. It is interesting to note that the baptismal font dates back to 1321; Mozart and Joseph Mohr, author of the Christmas carol, Silent Night were baptized at this font.

As an editor, it would stand to reason that I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions. First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm). As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a
document designed to promote literacy among the youth, seemingly put together by someone who could have used a couple more years fine-tuning his/her English skills… and this generated by one of the poorest performing districts on Long Island. Perhaps it was merely a test to see how many people would pick out the mistakes? And then, just last week came this: a new sign on the Robert Moses Causeway directing drivers to “Jonse” Beach. The sign was hung recently on the southbound side, causing many drivers to do a double take. Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive
roadside signs exempt from the proofreading process? Although, come to think of it, I actually had my own such experience with a misspelled sign back in high school, when the school district commissioned their annual display saluting the year’s Valedictorian, Salutatorian and other such honors. My excitement at seeing my name painted on the giant wooden signs marking both ends of town was slightly marred when we drove by to see the following on graduation morning: Valedictorian ~ Jamie Lee Ryan. Just a word to the wise – the bigger the structure, and the more publicly distributed the document, the more “second looks” (and third, and fourth) any wording should be given. (As I re-read this column one more time!)

The West Babylon Union Free School District recently offered its annual Summer Tech Camp for English language learners. The two-week program was designed to give ESL students entering grades one through six an opportunity to enhance their learning by building background knowledge, academic vocabulary and fluency on the unfamiliar topic of aviation. The camp also provided a platform for students to enhance their technology skills. This year, students explored the ways in which flight has impacted society. They worked to compare and contrast planes and flight throughout history, as well as explored flight as a metaphor for success. They also employed technology such as iPads, digital cameras and Flip cameras to document the experience, and their photos were used throughout the camp to build vocabulary and develop fluency. As a follow-up session to

During their weekly driver’s education lecture, juniors and seniors of West Babylon High School took part in an interactive antidrunken driving program known as the STOPPED Program. Students had the opportunity to participate in a simulated drunken driving experience by wearing vision-altering goggles and driving a buggy through a course of traffic cones, which represented pedestrians, and other common driving obstacles. Those students were also invited to take a sobriety test while wearing the goggles. Prior to taking the wheel, Deputy Sheriffs Thomas Indence and Thomas Bivona from the
Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office shared information with students regarding the laws and consequences of driving under the influence. “It was much better to learn like this than
to discuss statistics in a lecture,” said incoming senior Alyssa Downes. “It was scary to see how impaired your driving was. It really leaves an impact.”

Suffolk County Community College has claimed second place among national twoyear colleges in the National Alliance of TwoYear College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Directors’ Cup, an award that is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors of America (NACDA) and NATYCAA to the top intercollegiate two-year athletic programs in the nation. The Cup recognizes institutions that excel at a national level in both men’s and women’s team athletics. Started in 19931994, only Division I programs were awarded this honor by NACDA and USA Today. It was expanded in 1995-1996 to include Division II, III and the NAIA and, in 20112012, expanded to include Junior and Community Colleges. Each institution is awarded points in a predetermined number of sports for men and women. The overall champion is the institution that records the highest number of points in their division’s Directors’ Cup standings. Kevin Foley, Interim Director of Athletics at Suffolk County Community College, accepted the cup on behalf of the College at the Directors’ Cup Awards Luncheon, which was held as part of the NACDA Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida in June. Coach Foley said, “The Suffolk athletic program is honored to win this prestigious national award. It is an indication of the College’s, President McKay’s and the athletic department’s commitment to excellence. This award is a tribute to the dedication of our coaches and the commitment of our student athletes.”

Relationships Never End One of the benefits of being a funeral director is that I get to listen to many learned clergymen. I would like to share with you part of a eulogy recently presented by an insightful clergyman. The eulogy started out the same as many eulogies I had heard before. The deceased was praised for all the good he had done in this world. The immediate family and friends were assured the deceased was in a better place now void of suffering and filled with joy. Then he spoke of the relationship the deceased had with his family and friends. He said although your loved one’s life has ended, your relationship with him will never end. He will always love you and you will always love him. His relationship with you is like a stone thrown in a quiet ocean, We will never know on what shore the ripples will land and what affect they will have on that shore. Like your relationship with the deceased, you will never really know how great of an affect the deceased has had not only on you but on your children and your children’s children. The clergyman went on to say that you should continue to think of the deceased as a source of comfort, joy, strength, wisdom and love. Because just as if a person would move to a new town to prepare a home for his family to come, you would continue to think of him as being with you. The deceased has simply gone to find a new home and is awaiting your arrival. Although the deceased has died, his thoughts, love and your relationship with him will live with you forever. The clergyman concluded by saying all people and all relationships affect our lives forever and never end. Just as the stones thrown in the ocean affect the ocean, some relationships greatly affect us, some only to a minimal amount, but they all affect us and all relationships stay with us forever and affect our lives every day. 260411N0814
