TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Shopping Behaviors May Be Altered Due To Concerns About The COVID-19 Virus

A recent survey from the cloud-based voice and analytic supply chain solutions provider Voxware found that consumers were planning to change their approach to holiday shopping as early as August. The survey, which included 500 consumers in the United States and sought to determine how holiday shopping behaviors may be altered due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus, found that 76 percent of respondents intend to purchase more than half of their gifts online in 2020. With that in mind, small business owners can work to build up their e-commerce and delivery capabilities so they are in position to capitalize on a retail season that, while different, can still prove lucrative. In

fact, the earlier businesses prepare for the holiday shopping season, the more lucrative it may be, as 51 percent of respondents to the Voxware survey indicated that they expect to begin holiday shopping earlier than normal this year. In addition, 62 percent of respondents indicated they plan to purchase more stocking stuffers and lastminute gifts online. Small businesses can capitalize on that likelihood by offering free shipping on orders that exceed a certain amount. Such offers may compel consumers to more thoroughly peruse small businesses’ online offerings as they look to find everything from big gifts to stocking stuffers in the hopes of earning free shipping.

Legislator Tom Muratore Warns – “Be Prepared for Hurricanes” The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, 2020, and will end on November 30, 2020. Once again, Legislator Tom Muratore would like to remind residents of Hurricane Preparedness. “Most of this year’s focus has been on the Coronavirus pandemic and “flattening the curve,” but we must still remember that hurricane season is upon us and won’t stop because of Covid-19,” stated Legislator Muratore. “It’s important to be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best.” Know Your Risk and What to Do • Contact your local emergency management office to learn about evacuation routes and emergency plans. • Get additional information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (visit fema.gov and m.fema.gov from your mobile device for information), Ready Campaign (https://www. ready. gov/ hurricanes), the American Red Cross (https:// www.redcross.org / store/ preparedness/ stormpreparation/hurricanes? prefn1=IsCourse&prefv1 = f a l s e & p r e f n 2 =isDistributor&prefv2= false)andNOAA’sNational HurricaneCenter(nhc. noaa.gov). • Buy flood insurance. Anyone can get flooded, even if you don’t live in a designated flood zone. There is a 30-day waiting period before activation of flood insurance policies. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. • Inquire about emergency plans and procedures at your child’s school (when they return) and at your workplace. • Make a family disaster plan that includes out-of-town contacts and locations to reunite if you become separated. Many people have had their wisdom teeth removed. When people discuss wisdom tooth extraction with their healthcare professionals, it’s not uncommon for them to wonder why all four teeth must be removed, especially if only one tooth or even none of the teeth are causing any pain or are infected at the time of surgery. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the location of wisdom teeth at the back of the mouth make it difficult for people to keep them free from plaque and food. Wisdom teeth also may trap harmful bacteria that can contribute to gum disease, decay and infection. By removing all four wisdom teeth, surgeons can greatly reduce this risk.

There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

Catholic Health Services Offers Tips to Reduce COVID-19 Anxiety As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important.

Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirus-related anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing.

For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including Telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for emergency department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours. The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
