On June 10th, the New York “Run For The Fallen” under the auspices of Karen Wright, NY Director, “Honor and Remember” was a huge success. During the course of their 142 mile journey, the 25 Veterans and active duty members arrived at Mile Marker HM-209, which included the Gold Star Meyer family and the dedicated members AMVETS Post 897 and AMVETS Post 2000. AMVETS, Sons, Riders and Ladies Auxiliary members worked cohesively to make sure the memory of PFC David M Meyer, Jr. was honored and remembered. NYS “Run For The Fallen” started in Syracuse where a team of 25 Veterans and active duty members of the military embarked on a 142+ mile journey to honor the more than 312 NY Service Members who died as a result of serving during the War on Terror and in support of Operation Active Endeavor, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Each mile of the route was dedicated to an individual New York hero and his or her family. The run team stopped at each “Hero Marker” to give

In mid June, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernian’s Suffolk County Board partnered with and hosted a fundraiser for the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. This Taste of Babylon event was held at the Hibernian Cultural Center on Locust Avenue in Babylon Village. They had a beautiful day for the event, which was attended by 235 guests. Thanks to the restaurants, bakeries, florists, liquor stores and distributors who donated their food, flowers and wine to make this event

truly special. Riley’s winery participated, as did Destination Unknown Craft Brewery, lending to the success. A special thank you to Chapeys Funeral Home for donating Wheel of Fortune, and to all of the businesses throughout not only the township of Babylon but Islip township as well for all of their donations for the raffles. SCLAOH Board President and Co-Chair Patricia Rattigan presented Breast Cancer Coalition President Karen Kunkel with a check for $7,500 to

help in taking care of the women currently fighting Breast Cancer. The committee consisted of the LAOH Board and many wonderful ladies from throughout the county, along with BBCC Board members, Co-Chair Ericka Tripoli, Beverly Flagherty and Eileen Molloy. Of Birthdays & Bedtimes Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand… Ah, but enough about me. My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.

On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him?? Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand. It’s much faster that way. Plus,

it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my flakes to the floor, never to be seen again. Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me. As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish. Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

Creating A Personal Funeral Service - Part Two

Last week we asked you to think about developing an idea that would contribute to a personal funeral service - which would have the greatest meaning to you and your family for your loved one. We stated that it did not matter whether you were planning a traditional funeral with a direct cremation or direct burial with a memorial service at a later date. We feel, from all our experiences, those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into your and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends, co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers; The family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister, the eulogy can be delivered at the church during the funeral, or memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and a funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before. This is for several reasons, the most important is the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you.

Emilio Niland of Troop 194 in Babylon has proudly completed his Eagle Scout Project. Emilio wanted to do something for the veterans, so he coordinated

with the LI Coalition for the Homeless to organize, plan and execute his project. Sixty veterans and their families reside at Liberty Village. Emilio’s project helped soundproof

Proud Eagle a tremendous room used for entertainment for these veterans. He led a group of volunteers in building 50 frames, which will be stuffed, decorated and hung around the perimeter of the room. Emilio’s family and friends, along with troop members, all participated. It was a great day. Emilio plans to continue to help his community. He is a rising senior at St. Anthony’s High School, plays varsity tennis, is a ball person at the U.S. Open and works as a swim instructor at Phelps Lane Pool. He and his family are very proud of his accomplishments.
