One misconception of people who prepay for funeral arrangements without guaranteed pricing is that everything is paid for and that the prices would not increase. There are funeral homes that simply accept the money and do not guarantee any price. Thus the interest on the account must pay for funeral home increases and cash advance increases. Some funeral home do not guarantee cash advances and set the money aside in an interest bearing account and allow the interest to offset that funeral home costs and still charge families for the increase in cash advances. This policy may cause the family to pay hundreds of dollars at the time the funeral actually takes place. For instance a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350.00 in 1984 is now $1995.00 Monday thru Friday, $2475.00 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2475.00 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery.

TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

NEW PRINCIPAL APPOINTED - Stephen O’Leary has been appointed as the new principal for the West Babylon Senior High School. In 2012, he stepped into the role of assistant principal and also currently serves as the West Babylon Administrator’s Association president. O’Leary holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in mathematics from Stony Brook University. He received an advanced graduate certification in educational administration from Stony Brook University. He holds certifications in school building leader and school district leader. “I have been privileged over the course of the past 15 years to work in West Babylon. I am emotionally invested in this community, specifically in the continued success of the high school,” he said.

Telehealth is one option people may want to explore. The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Babylon High School recently honored its exceptional Class of 2020 with a series of four graduation ceremonies. On June 26, all 135 members of the graduating class gathered on the school’s football field for a “Senior Farewell.” Wearing masks and separated by six feet in all directions, the seniors listened to a reflection by senior class president Madaline Graham, a greeting from principal Al Cirone, speeches by salutatorian Katherine Hannon and valedictorian Anna Romero Mejia, and a farewell address by math

teacher Frank Mancuso, for whom the students had voted to speak. Due to Governor Cuomo’s 150-person capacity limit for graduations, only students were permitted to attend, but the event was live streamed so that proud families could watch from home. On June 27, BHS held three diploma conferment ceremonies, during which the names of all graduates were announced. Each session included 45 students, each of whom were allowed two guests.
