egislator Kevin McCaffrey hosted a NARCAN training at the West Babylon Fire Department to combat the opioid epidemic and teach people how to administer the livesaving drug to save the lives of people who overdose. Memoir in the Making By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

Children with health insurance are more likely to get the care they need, when they need it - from regular physical checkups, to treatment for sore throats and earaches, to care for chronic illnesses like asthma. CHP helps kids get that needed care as an affordable, state-sponsored health insurance program available to all children up to age 19 regardless of immigration status. Yet, even though almost all children in this age bracket qualify - and CHP coverage can be free or as little as $9 per month based on household income - more than 180,000 children remain uninsured across New York State. Fidelis Care is working hard to help change that by offering high quality, affordable CHP products to residents. “Many people incorrectly assume their income disqualifies them from CHP,” said Lori Vavrinec,

Director, Marketing for Fidelis Care. “On the contrary: every child can get CHP, although the monthly premium will vary based on income. Further, CHP isn’t just medical coverage,” Vavrinec continued. “A lot of people don’t realize that CHP comprehensively addresses medical, dental and vision care.” With more than 78,000 members, Fidelis Care is the largest CHP plan in the State. Fidelis Care earned an overall rating of five stars - the highest rating available - in the New York State Department of Health’s 2015 Regional Consumer Guides to Managed Care for Medicaid and Child Health Plus. Even if your family must pay the full premium due to income requirements, Fidelis Care still offers some of the lowest rates available. If you wish to enroll your child, you may do so any time of year. You may enroll online through the NY State of Health website, nystateofhealth. gov. If you apply by the 15th of the month, coverage for your child will begin on the first of the following month. Online research aside, one of the most convenient ways for New York State residents to learn more about and enroll in CHP is to visit any one of Fidelis Care’s area community offices. A knowledgeable and compassionate Health Benefit Representative will sit down with you, answer questions and discuss options, all in a language you understand. The Babylon School District is proud to announce that David Dileo has been appointed the new District Director of Technology and Accountability. Dileo comes to the district from the Tuckahoe School District, where he taught a wide range of technology courses and was instrumental in the development

of new technological initiatives. While teaching in Tuckahoe, Dileo introduced the district’s pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students to modern technologies including 3D printing, alternative energy sources and design and manufacturing. Additionally, within his administrative capacity, Dileo worked to develop a

three-year technology plan and implemented a oneto-one computing device initiative. Prior to his educational career in Tuckahoe, Dileo taught high school technology and worked as a teaching assistant in the Long Beach School District from 2002-2009 and taught high school technology in Phoenix, Arizona for a year. Dileo holds a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University, a master’s degree in administration from Grand Canyon University of Phoenix, Arizona and a master’s degree in computers in education from Long Island University. Although we are referred today as funeral directors, those individuals who direct funerals, we are also still referred to as “undertakers”. The term “undertaker” was derived from the concept that we “undertake” all that needs to be done for a funeral service. Whether we direct funerals or we undertake all the responsibilities for the funeral arrangements, we need your help in making the funeral a meaningful experience. Although we become an integral part of your family during the funeral process, we do not always know you or the deceased on a personal level when you first call us. Our purpose as funeral directors is not to take away your pain, because that is something we cannot do. You must work to make your life a little more bearable during this most difficult time. It has long been our philosophy, and we have stated it in this column numerous times, that FUNERALS ARE FOR THE LIVING. The deceased - as sick he or she was - has no more pain or suffering, but only peace. We the survivors, are left to grieve, mourn and cope with our severe loss. The funeral, whether it is a traditional full service funeral or a direct cremation or burial with a memorial service, should be a personal tribute to the life of the deceased which helps you remember the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth in this world to you and your family and friends. You may wish to formulate in your mind those aspects of your loved one which you would like to be remembered. You should think about what you would like written in the obituary. You may wish to discuss with us how we can help you remember your loved one by displaying pictures at the funeral home or during the memorial service.
