www.EquityFirstFoundation.org Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.

Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.

The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

EquityFirstFoundation

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. EFF has been on the front line of helping families in need with food and assisting with a health care PPE program. This pandemic has opened our community up to more financial hardships then imagined. Valedictorian Bryan Sabogal and salutatorian Carlos Sabogal were unable to attend the live ceremonies due to the pandemic but had their speeches streamed during the virtual ceremony. Principal Klomp made introductions and thanked all those who made the live and virtual ceremonies possible. “Breaking up the Class of 2020 in a safe manner consistent with New York State requirements for social gatherings in order to recognize each student, required a lot of planning and flexibility. But we are bulldog strong and even though we are not all together today, we are together,” he continued. “Your high school graduation is an important milestone but just one of many available to you as a result of the education that has been provided by the hard working and dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff within the North Babylon School District. Congratulations to all of you. Superintendent Eschbach challenged students to make a conscious effort to practice kindness and maintain dignity and respect. “Become mindful of how you respond to others and be responsible for your words and your actions. The North Babylon School District’s Board of Education, administration, staff, family and friends filed into the North Babylon High School’s stadium for the commencement ceremonies for the high school’s graduating Class of 2020 on June 26 and June 27. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the graduation was broken up into seven ceremonies to ensure public safety. In addition to their live ceremonies, the district also hosted a virtual ceremony. The first ceremony on June 26 kicked off with Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach and North Babylon High School Principal Jonathan Klomp highlighting the accomplishments of the Class of 2020. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone just cremate me and spend my ashes in the ocean” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is within three generations or less no one will remember any of us but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives.
