he Babylon United Methodist Church Nursery School visited the Fire Island Lighthouse this past April. This field trip was an important step for the four year-old classes who are going to Kindergarten in the fall. They were able to reinforce lessons on bus safety, visit a historic landmark and learn about life on Fire Island years ago. Thanks to the Lighthouse volunteers who provided age-appropriate demonstrations.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) announces that the Seaford FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Team #92 (the “Sea Lions”) is hosting an environmental cleanup at the Francis T. Purcell Preserve in Hempstead, New York on Saturday, August 8th, at 8 a.m. The primary habitat for many native plants and animals, this Hempstead plains area once occupied more than 40,000 acres in central Nassau County. Recognizing the years of neglect the preserve has endured, the team members felt it was time to restore the park to its original grandeur. All Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and Junior FLL teams are welcome to participate in the cleanup. The Francis T. Purcell Preserve is located at 101 James Doolittle Boulevard in Uniondale, New York, near the Nassau Coliseum and Long Island Marriott. In addition to a call for volunteers, SBPLI is also requesting donations of bottled water, first aid items and garbage bags to help with the cleanup efforts. “This event gives team members the opportunity to work together and help impact the environment in a positive manner,” says Chris Baker, Coach, Seaford FLL Team #92. “After visiting several local areas, we selected the Francis T. The program also featured the presentation of a film constructed by the alumni that celebrated the career of Mr. Signorelli, and a reception hosted by the Performing Arts Support Association (PASA) of North Babylon. Mr. Signorelli participated in a ribbon cutting that made the dedication official. Mr. Signorelli taught theatre in the district for 34 years and retired in June 2014. During his time, he directed more than 80 shows, had one student earn the prestigious Gershwin Award in 2011,

and also earned several Town of Babylon Youth Theatre Awards for his productions. He also coauthored the New York State Theatre Curriculum. Theatre teacher and director Lisa Drance, the Scheid family, PASA, the Board of Education and the alumni all collaborated to honor Mr. Signorelli. The dedication ceremony served to bring the community together to celebrate a most-deserving member of the theatre department’s rich history.

Board Recognition At its July reorganization meeting, North Babylon School District’s new Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach was sworn in, and the Board of Education reappointed Janet Meyerson and Sal Levanti to their posts

as president and vice president, respectively. In addition, Matthew Lucchetti was introduced as a new trustee on the Board. Eschbach, Meyerson, Levanti and Lucchetti all took their oaths of office before a district attorney.

The meeting, a precursor to the 2015-2016 school year, served to welcome Eschbach as leader of its schools and gave the Board an opportunity to thank the community for its support as it reorganized.

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reflection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone, just cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean,” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything, just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have assisted in wonderful ceremonies that took place in the individual’s home with a small gathering of friends to reminisce about the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also providied information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is that within three generations or less no one will remember any of us, but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives.
