North Wantagh resident, Cal Kitay. Cal was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma in June of 2011. Although the brain tumor was removed, due to allergic reactions with the chemotherapy drug, treatment had to cease and the aggressive tumor returned a year after Cal’s

initial diagnosis, this time in an inoperable part of the brain. He passed away a month later; just three days shy of his 67th birthday. Cal’s family and friends came together as Cal’s Crusaders for the inaugural Long Island Brain Tumor Walk in 2014 For years the National Brain Tumor Society has hosted events such as walks, runs, freezes, and

rides to raise awareness of disease, to raise money for better treatments, and to connect the brain tumor community. 2014 was the first year Long Island hosted its own walk which was a total success. This year the Long Island Brain Tumor Walk will be held September 15th at Jones Beach. The National Brain Tumor Society is

the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States and is rated as a 4-star charity on the Charity Navigator website. 688,000 people in the US are living with a brain tumor. Although 550,000 are benign, 138,000 are malignant and more than 69,000 others will be diagnosed this year.

This is why the National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people living with a brain tumor today and anyone who will be diagnosed tomorrow. Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 16th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “Participating in the Heart Walk can make an extraordinary impact in the community by investing funds in education and prevention programs, advocacy initiatives, and cutting edge scientific research which will save lives” said Vito Giannola,

Inspiration 101 I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation. Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to ﬂuctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.

That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free ﬂow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways. Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”

Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner. There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged? As with most things, recognizing a ﬂaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement. Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

Deluca Jr. in 1979. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School in North Babylon marked its 50th “Golden” Anniversary with an inschool celebration and commemoration attended by administrators, teachers, students, alumni, parents and dignitaries, including Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) who presented the school with a County Proclamation in recognition of an “unwavering commitment” to the students.

Vincent Fantauzzi accepted the Proclamation from Legislator Donnelly on behalf of the school at the ceremony in early June. “DeLuca Elementary School promotes a wonderful philosophy of a building character, fostering creativity, and teaching our youth to be thoughtful and productive citizens, principles that I know we can all agree on,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank the entire school community for all that they do and also for inviting me to be a part of this most special celebration.” The dedication of the bench and engraved brick pathway is a wonderful opportunity to commemorate the service of this organization that has a long and proud tradition. Richard Irizarry, Lions Club District Governor for Suffolk County, was presented with an official Certificate of Appreciation for his efforts in North Babylon and commitment to bettering the community. He has been involved in several beautification efforts,

including: spearheading the Holiday decorations on the decorative lampposts on DPA, creating the infamous Boy Scout weekend “Turk-A-Ree” at Belmont Lake Park, hosting the Annual May Family Street Fair and making sure North Babylon is planted with colorful ﬂowers along DPA, the Sylvan Ave Beautification Site, the Rich Schaffer Adopt-A-Spot, the High School and Library areas as well as the beautification site located at Hubbards Path & Sunrise Highway.

The girls hosted a pet food drive at a local Pet Smart and donated all of the pet food to the pantry. They also created pet beds which were distributed to a number of families for their pets.
