Counting Chickens “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” ~ John Lennon If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop

for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterﬂy, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the ﬂesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.

Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

By: Jon Taylor I was fortunate to be on hand on July 1st for the long awaited unveiling of the Bayman Statue here in Babylon. Droves of residents and dignitaries were on hand for the dedication ceremony. Designed from original drawings by our own renowned artist Kathryn Herzy, the statue was created by iconic sculptor Jose Fernandez. This beautiful work stands as a tribute to those who worked the waters and were responsible for the once thriving economy driven by the clamming industry along the Great South Bay. But it also serves as a reminder that we are the stewards of our bay. The task has only just begun, but thanks to

ongoing efforts to reduce damaging practices that affect our waters, the bay has already begun to improve. This is evidenced by the emergence of new oyster beds in our bay. Mother Earth is resilient! If we are willing to do our part, she will cleanse the waters and start anew. The 7 foot tall statue, along with informative graphics, stands on the east side of the canal running south from Argyle Falls. It is well worth a visit to learn about our great clamming heritage, contemplate the lives of those who worked the bay and gain an appreciation of what our Great South Bay could be tomorrow. It was with great sadness that we all learned of the

passing of surfing legend Charlie Bunger. Starting as hobby making surf boards in the basement, Charlie built a business which we know today as Bunger’s Surf Shop. Talking with those who new him well, it is clear that Charlie also built friendships which will live on deep within their hearts. Best wishes to his family and friends. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 94 will host a live fundraiser featuring The New York Wrestling Connection at our Babylon American Legion Hall. The event will be held on Saturday, July 28th. NYS Senator Phil Boyle was on hand with a proclamation as Babylon Town Officials honored Babylon resident, Samantha “Sam” Apuzzo, on being named the top female college lacrosse player in the Country. A three-year starter at Boston College, Apuzzo is the first BC Eagle to win the award in the history of the schools women’s lacrosse program. Sam led Boston College to an undefeated regular season and their second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance. Sam is the third in the nation in scoring and points scored, has 273 career points and, is well on her way to becoming Boston College’s all-time leader in goals scored. Lacrosse, rooted in Native American tradition, is one of the oldest team sports in North America. Once called Tewaaraton, the game has taken many variations before reaching its present day form.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Call Center Renamed On Saturday, June 7th, Legislator Sarah Anker was honored to join the Bocchimuzzo family, elected officials, friends and colleagues at the renaming of the 9-1-1 Call Center in Yaphank, in honor of Anthony “Tony” Bocchimuzzo. Bocchimuzzo, who passed away in July of 2017 at the age of 49, one week before his 50th birthday, was an invaluable member of both the Longwood community, the Coram Fire Department and the Suffolk

County Police Department. He had been a Suffolk Police Civilian Supervisor of the 911 dispatchers for 26 years, where he conducted trainings for new employees and acted as a communications liaison between the state and federal governments. While working for the Police Department, Bocchimuzzo was instrumental in compiling data for the ShotSpotter program, which uses acoustic equipment in high-crime areas to pinpoint gunfire

and alert patrol officers. He also served as a volunteer firefighter in Coram for over 30 years, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant. “Tony was a remarkable person. Not only was he a dedicated father and husband, but he was a committed volunteer to his community as a member of the Coram Fire Department and the Longwood Civic Associations. As a communications specialist, he was that quiet voice behind the sound

system that amplified so many wonderful community events. In addition, Tony was an outstanding county employee, who provided exceptional focus on county law enforcement and safety projects,” said Legislator Anker. “It was clear that Tony Bocchimuzzo was passionate about his work and cared deeply about making the world a better place for those around him,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve

Bellone. “Now, each time someone enters our 911 call center, they will be reminded of Anthony and the indelible mark he made on our Police Department." Last year, Legislator Anker hosted a summer concert in partnership with the Coram Civic Association and the Coram Fire Department in his honor. This year, the Coram Concert will be held on August 13 at 7 pm at the Coram Fire Department Substation located at Pine Road and

Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part Three For several weeks, we have been discussing how to create a more meaningful funeral service by making it more personal. I am talking about the entire funeral process, not just the actual funeral service. You can personalize the music during the wake if you so desire. I knew one family which at the beginning and end of each visitation for about five minutes played Frank Sinatra singing “I Did It MY Way” loud enough for everyone to hear, and by the end of the second visitation, everyone sang along. The deceased was a life-long fan of Sinatra and endured and conquered many hardships by doing things her way. Another family redecorated my chapel with the deceased’s artwork. I have also assisted families in arranging personal memorial services in their own home or restaurants where friends and family gathered to reflect and share memories.
