Class Of 2019 Become Graduates The North Babylon School District’s Board of Education, administration, staff, family and friends filled the North Babylon High School’s newly renovated stadium for the June 28 commencement ceremony of the high school’s graduating Class of 2019. The ceremony kicked off with the presentation of colors by the North Babylon Fire Department, followed by senior members of the orchestra and concert choir reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Prior to receiving their diplomas, the 377 students heard from several speakers who shared their wisdom and words of motivation for their new journey. This included Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach, Principal Jonathan Klomp, faculty speaker Dwayne Farris, senior class presidents Sierra Echevarria and Melinda Kayku, valedictorian Evgenia Kennedy and salutatorian John Rivera. Mr. Klomp provided three tricks for students to be mindful of when striving for success. This includes being aware of their feelings, taking microbreaks and breaking up their goals into smaller goals. “Here at the high school, we reminded you constantly of Mahatma Gandhi’s words, ‘We must be the change we wish to see in the world,’” he said. “Large change begins with small change and I wish all of you many strong beginnings, many incredible endings and a minimal number of struggles in the middle.” Superintendent Eschbach left students with final words of advice by encouraging them to be kind, be proud of who they are and stay true to themselves. “Take time to reﬂect back on all you have accomplished and use it to fuel your next chapter,” he said. “Always remember your Bulldog pride and your North Babylon roots which have helped shape the fine individuals you have become.” In his speech, salutatorian

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.” Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can

construct a wooden ramp usually within a day or two of the start of the project. Are you freezing in the winter because of cold drafts from the windows? They’ll weatherize your windows and doors to keep you warm. If you have trip hazards like missing floor tiles or a high saddle between doorways, that’s an easy fix for the RTLI volunteers. These are just a few of things that RTLI does every day for eligible homeowners across our beautiful island! If you are in need and want to know if you quality for assistance, please call them at 631.777.7894. You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. If you’re an employer you can call them and see how you can sponsor a project and have your staff participate in a day of service. With that, valedictorian Evgenia Kennedy took the podium and urged students to look for the good in the world. “I have faith that despite the challenging issues of today, we can come together as a generation to impact change,” she said. “In the end, it doesn’t matter where the river takes you, as long as you go through life with a sense of commitment, compassion and an open mind.” Following the distribution of diplomas, the North Babylon High School’s Class of 2019 turned the tassels on their caps from right to left and then joined together in the ceremonial cap toss.

Regional Bike Share Program Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Zagster and Bethpage Federal Credit Union today announced the credit union's sponsorship of Suffolk County’s Bike Share program, Bethpage Ride, the first of its kind on Long Island. The generous sponsorship will allow the County to launch the bike share system this August with 100 bikes and 24 stations throughout four communities across Suffolk County including Patchogue and Babylon. “Our bike share program will not only reduce congestion on our roadways, but will help provide the critical first and last-mile connection when using public transit,” said County Executive Bellone. “Thanks to our official sponsor Bethpage Federal Credit Union, this summer, residents throughout Suffolk will be able to go to a nearby train station, park, or downtown area, and right through an app on their phone, have instant access to a comfortable, user-friendly bike.” “What a tremendous asset for village residents and visitors to travel through our village and experience our greenway from Argyle Lake to Belmont park,” said Village of Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino. “Bethpage is thrilled to fund Long Island’s very first bike share program, a world-wide concept that millions benefit from daily, that will now be available right here on Long Island,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “There are countless benefits to the region, to the participating communities, to the residents, and also to visitors. This program will boost the local economy by increasing tourism, extend the reach of existing transit networks, and will provide the critical lastmile connection between transportation hubs, popular destinations, and our vibrant downtown areas. The goals of this regional bike share program include decreasing the use of the automobile as the primary mode of transportation, encouraging a more active, healthier lifestyle by providing bicycles for intermittent recreational use, and establishing a stronger bicycle network in Suffolk County, complete with new bike lanes which will support infrastructure. The program includes modern technology features that can be accessed through smartphone devices, making it simple and accessible. Once launched, users will have the ability to download an app and will either be able to pay per ride or buy a membership. Riders have several different rental options with Bethpage Ride. Riders can pay $1 per 15 minutes, but can also opt for a monthly plan for $10 or a yearly plan for $60 per year. Celebrating Each Individual Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District showed just how special and unique each individual student is during a ceremony in their rock garden on June 20. Last year, the school created the rock garden, modeled after the uniqueness of the book “Only One You,” which stresses how everyone is unique and has something

different to contribute to the world. Each student colored their own individual rock during art class. This year, the kindergartners and new entrants to the school were welcomed into Santapogue by creating their own rocks. One by one, each student added their own painted rocks to the garden. “There’s only one you in

this great big world,” said Santapogue Elementary School Principal Jennifer Carere. “Make it a better place. Not only are these stones a colorful addition to our school, they can serve as a daily reminder to students that no matter what, they’re special and that they have the power to change the world.”

Kicking Off The New School Year The North Babylon School District’s Board of Education held their annual reorganization meeting on July 9 to start the 2019-2020 school year. Daniel Caroleo and

Heather Rowland were reelected and sworn into their positions on the board. In addition, the board elected Mr. Caroleo as president and Matthew Lucchetti as vice president.

As part of the meeting, Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach and District Clerk Celeste Kerimian were also sworn into their positions.

You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister the eulogy can be delivered at the church during the funeral or at the memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before for several reasons, the most important being the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies.
