I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reﬂect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

“The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed; it does not however-forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teachings.” Although cremation is now permitted, it does not enjoy the same value as the burial of the body. The Catholic Church strongly prefers that the body of the decease be present for its funeral rites since the presence of the body most clearly brings to mind the life and death of the person. Therefore, the recommendation of the Bishop’s Committee recommends that cremation takes place following the funeral liturgy. “The cremation remains of the body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they came.” This includes a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the matter in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport and the final disposition. Cremation is not the final disposition of the deceased. The Church plainly states cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea-from the air or on the ground or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition the church requires. Vassallo, the Pledge of Allegiance led by National Honor Society President Alexandra Martocci, and performances of the national anthem and God Bless America by the band. In his opening remarks, Class of 2014 President John Modica encouraged his peers to never give up on themselves and to have confidence in their choices. “When you give up on yourself, you give up on all those who have supported you,” he said. The North Babylon High School Class of 2014 gathered together one final time on June 28th to celebrate the school’s annual commencement exercises. Members of the Board of Education, administration, teachers, special guests, parents and friends surrounded the students as they prepared to collect their high school diplomas and move their tassels from left to right.
