Designed to supplement training already learned from DMV, defensive driving and driver education programs, this single-day 2 ½ hour course teaches new drivers how to anticipate and avoid dangerous road situations. Each session features a short classroom lecture, followed by a live demonstration on the Emergency Vehicles Operations Course (EVOC). There are 10 different sessions to choose from between August 3rd and August 7th, all taught at the Suffolk Police Academy, 110 Old Country Road in Westhampton. Each senior entered will be considered for 2015’s Savvy Senior King and Queen, both of whom will be announced and crowned during AGES’ Sixth Annual Savvy Senior Day at Parker Jewish Institute in New Hyde Park, NY from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 20th. Participating in the coronation of this year’s Savvy Senior King and Queen will be 2014 Savvy Senior King William Young of Huntington and 2014 Savvy Senior Queen Lillian Guadagno of Valley Stream.

All nominated seniors will be publicly recognized, with this year’s King and Queen receiving gift certificates for professional studio portraits, compliments of Bradford Renaissance Portraits. The festivities will include food and music provided by a disc jockey. “There are so many unsung heroes who make up our senior community living right here on Long Island,” says Kevin Lawrence, AGES Chairman. “Each year, we receive such wonderful Savvy Senior nominations from families all over Long Island who in turn allow us the privilege in casting a well-deserved spotlight on their special seniors. Savvy Senior Day

So Operation: Explore NYC on Foot was a success. Mostly. This time, we decided to mix a little mass transit in to maximize our time spent experiencing the cultural offerings. You would think that would have eliminated some of the mileage; but, at day’s end, my handy app determined that we had still somehow managed to cover 25,695 steps, or 10.71 miles. Just a walk in the park. Literally. The thing about mass transit is that it doesn’t travel through Central Park. Shocking, I know. So, between our two trips clear across the entire width, plus plenty of aimless meandering down paths that, apparently, don’t travel in any particular direction, well, the miles definitely added up.

Luckily, this time, I was smart enough to wear comfortable, albeit flat, shoes. No unscheduled Duane Reade stops for us this time around! But still, after about eight hours of standing, walking, climbing… the searing pain in the ball of your foot is pretty much the same, flip flops or no. By the time we had explored Strawberry Fields, The Dakota, Belvedere Castle, the Shakespeare Garden and the Great Lawn, it was time for a snack. This was followed by a solid three hours perusing the European paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circling through gallery after gallery, until those incredibly uncomfortable-looking benches began to look pretty cushy. Back through the Park we headed, this time passing the Bethesda Terrace and

Fountain, the Bow Bridge, and winding up at the famed Central Park Boathouse Restaurant. Knowing we were cutting it a little close, with no reservation, we hovered hopefully right as the dinner service began. Thankfully, we landed a prime spot overlooking the lake. As we finished up, we had precisely 45 minutes to make our way out of the Park, across to the other side and down about a dozen blocks to Lincoln Center, where we had tickets to the American Ballet Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Doable. Sort of. As we ran across the plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, change of shoes in hand, the clock struck 7:30 p.m. Inside, a long line stretched through the lobby with dozens of patrons waiting at the Will Call window to pick up their tickets. Just. Made. It.

The Babylon United Methodist Church Nursery School brought families together in March at the first annual Bedtime Story Hour. The program was designed by UMC Nursery School teacher, Mrs. Dorene Keach. Each story featured music, puppets and participation from teachers, students and parents. “Mrs. Keach brings an enormous amount of talent and creativity to our Nursery School,” said administrator Lisa Murray. “Her Bedtime Story Hour gave the children and their parents the opportunity to come to the school at night to enjoy literature and music with their classmates and teachers. The evening was so much fun and a great success-we are already planning for next year’s event.” The school, now in its 43rd year, serves 152 families. The school offers programs for 2 ½, 3 and 4 year olds in age-appropriate learning settings.

Star Island’s 29th annual Shark Tournament was held on June 19th-20th at Star Island Yacht Club. One hundred eighteen boats took part in the two-day event. Fifty fish were caught during the tournament, including 23 Makos, 13 Blue Sharks, and 14 Threshers. The biggest winner was Anthony Vaccaro, whose prize catch - a 470-pound Mako - aboard his boat White Water Marine, earned him honors for Heaviest Overall Shark, First Heaviest Mako, and Day Two, Heaviest Shark. The Second Heaviest Mako, at 349 pounds, was brought in by Bob Kirschbert aboard Rick Davies’ Over Spray. John Brunelle on his Lady Irene caught a 334-pound Mako, earning him Third Heaviest Mako honors. The First Heaviest Blue Shark, at 221 pounds, was caught by Joe Mattiolo on Fred Ippolito’s Solivia Rose. There was a tie for Second Heaviest Blue Shark, as Chris Fallow aboard Scott Oster’s Isabetto and Randy Epright aboard Brinton Epright’s Pension Plan each snagged a 219-pound Blue Shark. Robert Cerreda caught a 449-pound Thresher aboard Richard Aidinis’ My Buddy, earning him honors for Day One, Heaviest Shark and First Heaviest Other Shark. The Second Heaviest Other Shark was a 358-pound Thresher caught by John Dendas aboard Philip Luchini’s Mountaineer, and Gil Camm’s catch a 292-pound Thresher - aboard Bill Curley’s Jakamo Two was awarded Third Heaviest Other Shark. Shark Tournament Winners

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently joined with members of North Atlantic Canoe & Kayak (NACK) and officials from the Town of Babylon Department of Environmental Control to officially declare the start of kayaking season in the Town, with a ribbon cutting at Cedar Beach Marina to unveil signs marking the multiple kayaking trails in the Great South Bay. At the ceremony, members of NACK praised the Town for raising awareness about the sport while also demonstrated their skills on the water.

Deputy Supervisor Martinez spoke of his recent kayaking experiences and encouraged residents to try it for themselves. “Located right on the water, the Town of Babylon truly is a natural spot for kayaking,” said Deputy Supervisor Martinez. “Having been on the water recently myself, I can tell you that not only is kayaking a relaxing activity but it provides great exercise as well. Our area is home to so many beautiful views, some of which may only be accessible by water; kayaking is a great way to experience these hidden

gems.” The signs, which have been installed at six launch sites throughout the Town, not only mark the designated trails but also contain important safety information that every kayaker should remember, whether they’re a beginner or expert. The launch sites are located at Cedar Beach, Gilgo Beach, Tanner Park, Village of Amityville Beach, Venetian Shores Park and Oak Beach Park. Last week we asked you to think about developing an idea that would contribute to a personal funeral service - which would have the greatest meaning to you and your family for your loved one. We stated that it did not matter whether you were planning a traditional funeral with a direct cremation or direct burial with a memorial service at a later date. We feel, from all our experiences, those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into your and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends, co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers; The family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister, the eulogy can be delivered at the church during the funeral, or memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and a funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before. This is for several reasons, the most important is the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Tuesday, July 28th, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately 2.0 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships

and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” Over 5 million people in this country are currently living with Alzheimer’s Disease, with more than 200,000 individuals under the age of 65. The social, economical, and emotional impact of this disease can be devastating to

Many of the horses in their care were rescued from dire situations and now providing incredible loving care and therapy to people. After the inspirational morning at Pal-O-Mine, the second stop of the tour is at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue in Baiting Hollow. Guests will soak in the countryside for a gourmet lunch and after sample three wine tastings while overlooking the horse rescue and sanctuary on the premises. After lunch, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the absolutely stunning horse rescue farm to learn why this rescue was started, meet the beautiful horses like Angel and Mirage, learn their stories – and how they became the namesakes of the vineyards most popular wines. On the way back home the bus will stop at a favorite farm stand that

has locally harvested seasonal produce grown on Long Island’s north shore in Suffolk County. A portion of the proceeds for this event will go to help both Pal-OMine and Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue.
