HPV Vaccination Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

LOCAL STUDENT RECOGNIZED - Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Babylon Town Board recently recognized Favour Okodogbe, 16, of Amityville, who published a children’s workbook earlier this year. Favour Okodogbe, 16, of Amityville, is a senior at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip. Earlier this year, Okodogbe published a children’s workbook, A Workbook Just For You, which contains material for any child between the ages of 1-7. From ABCs to 123s, the workbook covers all the basics of what a child needs upon entering school. Okodogbe skipped the 1st grade as a child and is now headed to college in

California at the age of 16. She published the book in hopes of inspiring children to learn like she did at a young age. Local Student Graduates from Space Camp Hyacinth Hansen of Babylon, recently attended Space Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, home of Space Camp®,

Space Camp® Robotics™, Aviation Challenge® and U.S. Cyber Camp®. The Rocket Center is a Smithsonian Affiliate and

NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center. The weeklong educational program

promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while training students and with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem solving. This program is specifically designed for trainees who have a passion for space exploration. Hyacinth spent the week training with a team that flew a simulated space mission to the International Space Station (ISS), the Moon or Mars. The crew

participated in experiments and successfully completed an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalk. Hyacinth and crew returned to earth in time to graduate with honors. Space Camp is located in Huntsville, Alabama, and uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM subjects. Students sleep in quarters designed to resemble the ISS and train in simulators like those used by NASA. Almost 1 million trainees

have graduated from a Space Camp® program since its inception in 1982, including European Space Agency astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti and NASA astronauts Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Dr. Kate Rubins, Dr. Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Christina Koch, who set the record for the longest duration space flight by a female. Children and teachers from all 50 states and almost 150 international locations have attended a Space Camp® program.
