n July 6th, the Town of Babylon presented a proclamation and resolution to First Company Pink for its “gotchecked?” campaign – a vehicle to reach youth by integrating music, videos, clothing and more into the psyche of young women to raise breast cancer awareness. The organization continues to fight to lower the age for mammogram screenings, but with the school system finally listening.

Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center recently unveiled the winners of the annual Gurwin Photo Contest, which are now on permanent display at the 460bed nursing and rehabilitation facility. The striking photos are a signature element of the warm and welcoming environment at Gurwin. According to Herbert H. Friedman, Gurwin Center Executive Vice President/ CEO, the contest began more than 23 years ago with two objectives: to decorate the new facility, and to give local photographers an opportunity to show off their work. “Our contest has a loyal following, and most of the photographers understand that their photo does more than win them a prize,” he said. “When a photo is chosen, it is not only welldone technically and pleasing in subject matter, but also it is selected with our residents in mind. Knowing that it will bring joy to others for years to come is often cited by photog¬raphers as the main reason they enter our contest, regardless of the actual prize won.” This year, more than 850 entries were received in 12

categories. In all, 44 photos were selected to adorn the walls of the Helen and Nat Tiffen Gallery in the main cor¬ridor at Gurwin. The Tiffen Company, whose founder Nat was a Gurwin Center resident, has sponsored the contest for 10 years. “Tiffen Company’s generosity enables us to continue to provide beautiful, changing artwork for our residents to enjoy,” Friedman said. Professional photographers Michael Cassera, Jan LaRoche and Tony Lopez did the honors as judges; a panel of resident judges then chose their “Resident Selections” from a grouping of possible winners. “It is always exciting to enter this contest,” said Karen Celella, a perennial winner whose photo Winter Solitude garnered an Honorable Mention in the Landscape Category. “I am honored to be among the winners again this year. In comparison to the many other contests I have been fortunate to be part of, this contest holds the honor of the very best printing, framing and presenting.” The Gurwin Photo Contest has become one of Long Island’s premier photo

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to warn the public that scammers posing as IRS agents have been calling residents in Suffolk County demanding payments and threatening arrest by County Sheriffs if they do not pay. Several residents called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office this morning to report the fraudulent activity. The IRS posted a public alert about these types of scams on its website and offered the following information and advice to anyone receiving unsolicited calls from people claiming to be IRS officials: Protect Yourself Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming

to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via a phishing email. Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying. They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money. Scammers often alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS or another agency is calling. The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name,

address and other personal information to make the call sound official. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a telltale sign of a scam. The IRS will never: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

Summer Art Workshop Babylon Village Arts Council is sponsoring its Summer Art Workshop led by local artist Edward Lee during August. Anyone can learn to create art! Through a stepby-step method, students in grades 4-10 are taught basic drawing, cartooning, zen doodling and collage skills. One of the benefits of being a funeral director is that I get to listen to many learned clergymen. I would like to share with you part of a eulogy recently presented by an insightful clergyman. The eulogy started out the same as many eulogies I had heard before. The deceased was praised for all the good he had done in this world. The immediate family and friends were assured the deceased was in a better place now void of suffering and filled with joy. Then he spoke of the relationship the deceased had with his family and friends. He said although your loved one’s life has ended, your relationship with him will never end. He will always love you and you will always love him. His relationship with you is like a stone thrown in a quiet ocean. We never know on what shore the ripples will land and what effect they will have on that shore. Like your relationship with the deceased, you never really know how great of an effect the deceased has had not only on you but on your children and your children’s children. The clergyman went on to say that you should continue to think of the deceased as a source of comfort, joy, strength, wisdom and love. Because just as if a person would move to a new town to prepare a home for his family to come, you would continue to think of him as being with you. The deceased has simply gone to a new home and is awaiting your arrival. Although the deceased has died, his thoughts, love and your relationship with him will live with you forever. The clergyman concluded by saying all people and all relationships affect our lives forever and never end. Just as the stones thrown in the ocean affect the ocean, some relationships greatly affect us, some only to a minimal amount, but they all affect us and all relationships stay with us forever and affect our daily lives every day.

On Thursday, June 30th, a group of mothers representing Humans Wearing Baby Humans of Long Island (HWBHLI), a local peerto-peer babywearing group, dropped off baked goods, pictures, and cards handmade by group members and their children, to the Suffolk County Police Department’s 1st Precinct in West Babylon. The first of its monthly

Appreciation Days, HWBHLI sought to thank the more than 300 men and women of the 1st precinct for their hard work and sacrifice. “We had a wonderful visit. The officers and staff were so kind and grateful,” said Lisa Michaud, one of HWBHLI’s group leaders and event organizer. “Many in our group have family members who are law enforcement officers, some are officers themselves.

We wanted to show how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make every day for our communities. As parents, we also valued this opportunity to teach and model respect and gratitude to our children.” HWBHLI’s Appreciation Days will be a monthly group event, honoring law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other local Long Islanders who have a significant impact on the community.
