The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! School Hosts STEAM Night As a means of showcasing all of the wonderful things happening in science, technology, art, mathematics and engineering, the Babylon Elementary School recently hosted its inaugural STEAM Night, inviting students and their families to the school for an evening of fun and learning. Thanks to the efforts of Babylon Elementary School STEAM instructor Emily Moran and the Babylon Elementary School ParentTeacher Association, the
school’s gymnasium and cafeteria were transformed into a number of STEAMoriented activity stations for all to enjoy. Included were challenges such as “Build Your Own Parachute,” where students were given a number of common household items to build a parachute which could be gently thrown off the gym bleachers, along with a creation station which allowed them to build their very own lava lamps and create massive balloon
towers. Additionally, the night featured engineeringoriented KEVA Planks, and a large coloring wall in the cafeteria made generously by Ms. Moran herself. The district would also like to thank community parent Mrs. Griffin for creating the beautiful lobby display which read “Full STEAM Ahead,” along with the hundreds of students and families who attended throughout the course of the evening’s two sessions.
Celebrating The Top 25 Graduates The top 25 students in the Class of 2019 at West Babylon Senior High School were honored for their accomplishments during the second annual Blue and Gold Breakfast with the Superintendent on June 18. Hosted by West Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly and joined by district administrators, students were invited to celebrate
their achievements in the board of education room. The students were asked to choose a West Babylon staff member who has greatly impacted their educational career to join them as their guest for the breakfast. “Your character, resilience and perseverance shine through in everything you do,” said West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly. “You have all excelled in the classroom, on the athletics
field, in the arts, or in some cases, all of these areas. You have all left the halls of West Babylon a better place for having been here.” Dr. Farrelly called each student up to be recognized individually and presented him or her with a gift. The student then invited their honored guest to be acknowledged as well. The top 25 gathered for one last group photo together before their upcoming graduation.

Although we are referred to today as funeral directors, those individuals who direct funerals, we are also still referred to as “undertakers”. The term “undertaker” was derived from the concept that we “undertake” all that needs to be done for a funeral service. Whether we direct funerals or we undertake all the responsibilities for the funeral arrangements, we need your help in making the funeral a meaningful experience. Although we become an integral part of your family during the funeral process, we do not always know you or the deceased on a personal level when you first call us. Our purpose as funeral directors is not to take away your pain; that is something we cannot do because you must work through your pain but rather our purpose is to make your life a little more bearable during the most difficult time of your life. It has long been our philosphy, and we have stated it in this column numerous times, that FUNERALS ARE FOR THE LIVING. The deceased, as sick as he or she was, has no more pain or suffering but only peace. We, the survivors, are left to grieve, mourn, and cope with our severe loss. The funeral, whether it is a traditional full service funeral or a direct cremation or burial with a memorial service, should be a personal tribute to the life of the deceased, which helps you remember the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth in this world to you and your family and friends. You may wish to formulate in your mind those aspects of your loved one which you would like to be remembered. You should think about what you would like written in the obituary. You may wish to discuss with us how we can help you remember your loved one by displaying pictures at the funeral home or during the memorial service.
