Angela’s House, a local non-profit celebrates their third home with their annual fishing fundraiser on Tuesday, July 30th sailing out of Captree State Park in Babylon, NY from 4 to 8 p.m. The event sponsor is the charter boat “Fishtale.” Guests are invited to join us on one of our chartered boats to fish in support of Angela’s House. Rendezvous East The United States Power Squadrons District 3 will hold Rendezvous East, their premier summer event in Greenport July 26th through 28th. The last five rendezvous in Greenport were so successful; the squadrons are back again. With Greenport’s long maritime heritage dating back to the 1600’s, what a great place for a gathering of Long Island boaters. While each local squadron schedules their own events, Rendezvous East brings together boaters from all District 3 squadrons across Long Island for the summer’s biggest boating celebration. District Commander Barry Rush, SN will welcome boats to Mitchell Marina and possibly into several other local marinas. Many other squadron members will be arriving by land. Festivities begin with a Commander’s cocktail party on Friday evening. They continue on Saturday with breakfast, a flag raising ceremony at 11

This seems to have been the weather forecast for the last, I don’t know, two or three weeks or so, give or take a day when it was obviously, undeniably… raining. What to do with this kind of uncertainty? Cancel all plans and batten down the hatches “just in case,” right? Um… no. I shake my head when I see people frantically rearranging their schedules to accommodate the weather – that great, unpredictable force of Mother Nature that we are all beholden to. Why? Chances are, the

so-called experts will be slightly off, or, better yet, completely wrong. Best to cover all bases by predicting a little of everything, no? No. How about some good old-fashioned meteorology to back up these forecasts – and future-casts? Or better yet, how about we focus on getting the one-day right before expanding into the next 7-10 days? Life is unpredictable enough as it is. The last thing we need is others’ farflung foresight thrown into the mix to ensure that no plans are ever made, nothing is ever done and we all just sit around and “play it safe.”

Put it this way, you could do nothing, go nowhere, see no one, experience zilch ... and your own four walls and ceiling could come crashing down around you. So better to get out and see the world, no? I think so. Which is why, sometimes to my detriment, I refuse to put any plans on hold until I look out my window and decide for myself. There are far too many, more important things to worry about. A storm cloud hovering overhead is the least of them. Besides, after the storm, you just may see a rainbow.

It grew and grew and grew... into a mulberry tree. We were all surprised, and amazed, at the multitude of animals that arrived. Cardinals nest in the tree and flit around the yard. A possum quietly feasts on the berries, hidden by the darkness of night. Doves, robins and whippoorwills glory in its fruit and dazzle us with song. Squirrels playfully romp through the branches, showering berries to the ground.

Nature played a trick so that my son, who cares for animals so deeply and watches over nature so intently, could bring so much of both to our yard. Nature played a trick, and the fruit our tree bears is not solely for our enjoyment. Perhaps I’ll have to learn to make mulberry syrup and mulberry jam, or maybe the trick is just to munch them right off the tree like the many visitors to our yard. Perhaps that was nature’s trick all along.

BACCA hosted its 24th Annual Judged Art Show reception on Friday night June 7th at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village despite torrential rains that blanketed the region. On hand were Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Thomas Donnelly and BACCA President Shawn Cullinane to present awards to deserving artists. This year’s show included works of artists from Port Washington to Patchogue and doubled the entries from the previous year. The Art Show judge was Mario Tucci, a muralist that specializes in Tromp L’Oeil painting and portraiture. One of the coveted prizes in the BACCA show was the Supervisor’s Award, which went to John R. Redlich for his painting “Surfs Up.” The Best in Show Award went to artist Dan Fusco for his painting “My Love.” The Viewer’s Choice Award went to Ronald F. Horton
