We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which

affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

about the Class of 2016’s plans to plant a tree at the school and hang four bulldog posters in the hallways and district Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach quoted lyrics from Burt Bacharach’s song, “What the World Needs Now” during his speech. Salutatorian Kaitlyn Sparacio said she was confident that she and her students have the tools to succeed while valedictorian Alonzo Tabada urged students to remember actress Audrey Hepburn’s statement, “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says, ‘I’m possible.’” Each year, the seniors collectively select one faculty member to deliver a speech at their graduation. The Class of 2016 selected

English teacher Kimberly Maccarrone to speak at graduation, and she spoke affectionately to her beloved students. Five students, Andrew DiGiacomo, Tan Duong, Tayla Fitzroy, Amanda Liantonio and Bryan Warno, were then honored for earning perfect attendance throughout all four years in high school. Each student received a certificate to commemorate the outstanding achievement. With their loved ones applauding their major accomplishment, students had their names announced one by one, and each received the diploma he or she coveted for four years.

FIRE HOUSE VISIT - The Babylon United Methodist Church Nursery School recently toured the Main Fire House in Babylon Village. “Our school visits the Fire House every year to reinforce the lessons about fire safety. We are very grateful to the volunteer fire fighters who take time out of their week to teach the children about fire safety, how their equipment works and assign “homework” to the children. They also tell the children to remind their parents to practice fire drills at home and change the batteries in the smoke detectors,” said school administrator Lisa Murray.

West Babylon Senior High School’s Class of 2016 closed the final chapter in their academic careers during the commencement exercise held on the West Babylon Junior High School field on the evening of June 24th. More than 300 students marched onto the field as the band played Pomp and Circumstance. Dr. Ellice Vassallo, West Babylon Senior High School principal, reminded the seniors that they are well prepared for what lies ahead and the experiences they will encounter. “Learn to persevere, become leaders and develop your talents,” she said. West Babylon senior class president Jennifer

Melfi welcomed guests to the ceremony, while salutatorian Lindsey Del Prete thanked the administrators, teachers and coaches for their hard work and dedication. “In the years to come, we will continue to learn,” Del Prete said. “We will learn how to be independent. From here, we all step out into the real world. From here, everything changes and it is up to us to choose what direction we go in.” West Babylon valedictorian Alexander Barrett urged his peers to find their passion as they start the next phase of their lives. “Find your passion and work hard for it,” Barrett said. “Hard work is what turns average

into good. Hard work is what turns good into great and great into legendary.” Before the conferring of diplomas, West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly told the audience how proud she was to watch, cheer on and read about all of the Class of 2016’s amazing accomplishments. “You have brought so much joy to this community,” Dr. Farrelly said. “You have met all the academic demands and your commitment to your education is what got you here today. Life will throw you curve balls; there will be struggles. Try to remain positive. When you fall, get right back up, accept responsibility and move forward.”

The Future Beckons Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Class of 2016 celebrated their commencement on June 25th on Coach Williams Memorial Field. The 126 members of the class proudly marched onto the field to Pomp and Circumstance, led by the Color Guard and American Celtic Pipe Band. Michael Logan, Babylon Junior-Senior High School senior class president, and Student Council President Haley Watt offered a reﬂection on years past and a look ahead to new beginnings. Salutatorian Ryan Cosgro spoke about the high school experience in Babylon. “It is the collective experience of all the positives and negatives throughout high school that helps us discover who we are,” Cosgro said, adding that failures will also come on the path to success. “Failure is not necessarily a bad thing. You can view failure as defeat or an opportunity to do better.

The important thing is to be resilient. The ability to recover from and try again is what will lead to success.” Valedictorian Adam Gumbardo told his peers to be different and be a voice out in the world. “I hope that in years to come, we are all trying new things, breaking down new barriers and making new mistakes,” Gumbardo said. “You cannot go back in time and make a brand

new beginning, but you can start right now and make a brand new ending.” After the presentation of diplomas by Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi and Babylon School District Board of Education President Ann Donaldson, the concert chorus joined together one last time to sing “Time of Your Life” by Green Day.

Going Green in Every Color

Even as they wound down to the final days of school, students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park turned their attention to thinking of planet earth. SSCM Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Lisa Shirreffs shared a fun and earthfriendly recycling activity with her students during the last week of school. Collecting thousands of used crayons, the students got involved in a community service through

the “Crazy Crayons Project,” which has made it possible to stop 105,000 pounds of unwanted crayons from going into landfills with the help from schools, organization educators and kids across this country. This national crayon recycling program is simple and brilliant. Students collect unwanted crayons, used, broken, unpopular colors. They then have a fun time sorting, counting and boxing

them up and shipping them to Crazy Crayons, where they are melted down and made into new crayons. These new crayons are sent to hospitals, orphanages and inner city schools. The students found this to be a great interactive learning experience and it was a perfect way for our youngest students to have a way to give back to others.

Babylon Village Arts Council is offering its Children’s Art Experience Workshop beginning in August. Local artist, Edward Lee, will be instructing students in the creation of art. Workshop dates are: August 4th, 10th and 17th. Anyone can learn to create art! Through a stepby-step method, students in grades 4-10 are taught basic drawing, cartooning, zen doodling and collage skills. Class size is limited to a maximum of 15 to allow for teaching on an individualized basis

according to each student’s personal abilities and skills, moving ahead at their own pace. Besides learning technical and artistic skills, students gain patience, focus, pride and confidence in their work. They come to see it is completely possible to set and realize their artistic goals. Previous participants are encouraged to sign up! Registration fee is $25 (non-refundable). Art supplies are included in registration fee. Workshop will take place at the Historic Nathaniel Conklin House located at 280 Deer Park Avenue in Babylon

Some funeral homes do not guarantee cash advances and set the money aside in an interest bearing account and allow the interest to offset that funeral home costs and still charge families for the increases in cash advances. This policy may cause the family to pay hundreds of dollars at the time the funeral actually takes place. For instance a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350.00 in 1984 is now $1995.00 Monday thru Friday, $2475.00 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2475.00 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery.
