Not even Mother Nature could dampen the spirits of the graduating seniors of North Babylon High School who celebrated their commencement on June 24th. Students marched from the gym to the football field as their family, friends and community members cheered them on. The day commemorated four years of hard work, memories and experiences that students can hold on to as they move forward to college, the workforce or the military. Of Summer Memories and Staycations Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Once the summer begins, it seems like time just flies! We have had some fantastic weather, the village pool is in full swing and it’s hard to believe that the 4th is already behind us. This is the season we live for … beautiful long days in our parks, on the Great South Bay or at the beach, and great summer nights to BBQ or enjoy the vibrant nightlife unique to our south shore. I visited our newest little treasure this past week. F&M Goods has opened their doors with a unique selection of interesting finds, both vintage and new. Be sure to stop in to browse and welcome Lonnie to our downtown. You will find

F&M Goods at 1 Fire Island Avenue, just south of Main Street. It was great to find that Argyle Jewelers will remain a part of our village! Make a note of their future home. They will be moving north of their current location to new digs at 216 Deer Park Avenue, just a bit south of Railroad Avenue. The Babylon American Legion held its installation of officers on Saturday, June 24th. Officers of Post 94, the Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion were sworn in. All units are very active with programs serving our veterans and our community.

Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. North Babylon High School’s Class of 2024 inched one step closer to its graduation with moving up ceremonies throughout the district’s five elementary schools. With their parents and loved ones in attendance, each school hosted a special program to commemorate the fifth-grade students’ completion of elementary school with certificates and awards during the final week of school. As they prepare to continue their academic journeys at Robert Moses Middle

School, students were encouraged to continue following their dreams and working hard to achieve success. Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach offered words of advice to the students. “What is worth learning is worth working hard for,” said Eschbach at Belmont Elementary School’s moving up ceremony. “Don’t let frustration get the best of you; persevere! Ask for help and keep trying; the payoff will be great. Be humble about

your accomplishments and be quick to compliment others on theirs. [Most importantly], smile. Maintaining a positive attitude will go a long way. You’ll be amazed at how the world looks, and how the world looks at you when you have a smile on your face.” The beautiful ceremonies celebrated the students’ success and the next chapter of their lives. Family, friends, district staff and administration recently filled the bleachers and surrounding areas of the newly renovated Coach Walter F. Williams Football Field to recognize and celebrate Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s graduating Class of 2017. The proud students marched out onto the field as the beautiful sounds of the American Celtic Pipe Band and Babylon High School Band filled the air with music. After opening remarks from Assistant Principal Jennifer Mangone, and a Pledge of Allegiance salute led by Senior Class Vice President Mario Bencivenga and Senior Class Student Council Vice President Alexander Alessi, Principal Al Cirone took the stage to address the graduates of the Class of 2017. Throughout his address, Mr. Cirone noted

that these students were the first seventh grade he oversaw when he assumed the role of principal back in 2011 and encouraged all to focus on their energy and efforts toward creating positivity in the world. Additionally, Class of 2017 valedictorian Gabriella Albanese, along with salutatorian Ece Bapcum, delivered a pair of eloquent speeches expressing their gratitude toward their fellow peers and their hopes for everyone’s continued successes in the future. Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi reminded the students that their future is boundless and the opportunities that await them are plentiful as she recited from Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” Then, ceremoniously, each student was called to the dais to receive

This summer Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), is featuring two Art Classes for children. Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently joined with board members and staff of the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) at an annual award ceremony to recognize local graduating high school seniors who plan on continuing their education at technical schools. A total of eleven $500 scholarships were distributed to the students,

all residents of the Town of Babylon. These hardworking students will learn important skills that will contribute to the development of a sophisticated workforce that’s needed on Long Island, an ideal that remains a core component of the IDA’s mission. This year’s scholarship winners are Enrique Murcia, Brandon Lugo, Monique McDonald, Serafina Shaner, Patrick J.

Nealon, Devyn Chambers, Ryan Dilavore, Kelsey Christiansen, Brenden Lynch, Hailey Smith, and Azly Gonzalez. Eagle Pride Shines West Babylon School District administrators, board of education members, faculty, family and friends gathered on the West Babylon Junior High School field to celebrate the commencement exercises of the Class of 2017 on June 23rd. Led on to the field by administrators, the soonto-be graduates marched to “Pomp and Circumstance” courtesy of the band, which then led “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” Mary Chasen, president of the Class of 2017, welcomed guests to the ceremony. She spoke to her classmates about living in the present and enjoying the time right here and now. “Look at the person you are right now,” she said. “This ceremony will end and we will all be different. We all have pieces of this community and when we leave here, we will carry them off with us.” Salutatorian Michael Lee talked about what lies ahead as they enter college or the workforce. “High school is full of challenges and obstacles that seem unconquerable,”

he said. “I believe hard work and dedication are the keys to success. When new challenges arise, don’t fear them; face them.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly acknowledged different individual students in the Class of 2017 who left their mark on West Babylon Senior High School. “Throughout this school year, I have seen, heard and witnessed many of these accomplishments,” she said. “ As you begin your next chapter, you will find easy days and you will find challenging ones. Be resilient; don’t forget to take care of yourself. Find gratitude and appreciation in every day.” Before valedictorian Christina Capobianco took to the podium, the chorus performed their senior medley – featuring “Breakaway,” “Fix You,” “I Hope You Dance,” “Home” and “Unwritten” – before the band ended with “Like an Eagle.” Capobianco urged her fellow classmates to take risks. “This is the ending of the first chapter of your life,” she said. “Some of us have an idea of

where we want to be five, 10, 20 years from now. Even if you have planned every detail, be open to change and keep an open mind or you might miss an unexpected opportunity for greatness. You will never know the journey that awaits you if you never leave the comfort and safety of your home. Keep true to who you are and where you come from. Remember what your values are and never forget your roots. It takes fortitude and self-awareness to succeed. Sometimes it’s going to be hard to go against the crowd and make the right decisions.” Before conferring the diplomas to each member of the Class of 2017, West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo told them: “Your four years have gone quickly but you have made the most of them. You leave the high school a better place because you were here.” After tossing their caps high in the air, friends and family joined the graduates on the field to celebrate.
