West Babylon Senior High School seniors Nicole Cutrone and Julie Barrett have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2014. Each is an exceptional student whose academic achievement is equaled by her athletic, co-curricular and philanthropic pursuits. With a 109 grade point average, Nicole maintains that her personality is partly behind her academic success. “With my personality, I was never able to slack off. It mattered that I did the work,” she said. “It is really nice to know that all my hard work has been validated.” Nicole is a National Advanced Placement Scholar and a Board of Regents Scholarship recipient. As a member of the Science Olympiad team, she placed in three regional competition events and acquired fourth and fifth place at the New York State competition. The Town of Babylon recently granted Nicole an Historical Society scholarship for top scores in history. Nicole is a member of the Leaders Club, where she organizes and participates in local fundraisers, and the Leo Club, which focuses on community service and local charities. She is editor of the Yearbook Club and a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Vincent Foley Foreign Language and math and science honor societies. Nicole has been a member of the field hockey team during all four years of high school and has received two varsity letters for her achievements on the field. She also volunteers at the library, where she teaches young children how to read, and tutors peers in math. Nicole will attend Fordham University, where she will pursue her studies in biology. With a 108.5 grade

West Babylon High School student-artist Anna Fleury was named the first-place winner in Riverhead’s East End Arts Gallery art “Composition” competition. Her artwork titled “Red Roof” is a photo on canvas and an aerial view of the Fire Island Lighthouse. Her work will be on view from June 20th through August 1st. Anna, a sophomore, is a student in Heather Korchma’s Drawing and Painting II class and Christine Iaquinto’s Photo II class. She will continue her art studies in Ms. Korchma’s Advanced Placement Studio class this fall. But I knew if I closed BCBA the kids we service would be the ones who suffered the most. As a Boxing Coach I am always teaching kids the importance of finding a way, dusting yourself off and getting up when life knocks you down, so throwing in the towel on BCBA was not the answer,” said Ray Bettinelli, Head Boxing Coach and Director of Operations for BCBA. The athletic achievements of Babylon High School students Colin Godfrey and Ashley Lucas were recognized during the district’s midJune Board of Education meeting. The district’s administration, Board of Education and athletic department congratulated the winning track stars for their outstanding post-season honors and presented them with certificates of recognition. Colin earned third place in the long jump and 10th place in the high jump at this year’s NYSPHSAA Division II Track and Field Championship, as well as All-State honors. Ashley earned third place in the 100-meter dash and fifth place in the 200-meter dash at this year’s NYSPHSAA Division II Track and Field Championships, All-State Honors and the Good Sportsmanship Award.

Rocket Project Babylon Memorial Grade School sixthgrade students had the chance to construct and launch their own rockets as part of a grade-level interdisciplinary unit of study. The project, which tied into the students’ science and math curriculum, focused on the properties of a rocket, the impact wind speed, wind direction and weight have on the flying object as well
as the conditions needed to ensure flight. They also discussed the NASA rocket launch program and selected a day for their simulation that mirrored the official process. After constructing their original rockets and associated parachute, each student took a turn at sailing it high into the sky off a launching pad on the back field of the school. The students participated in a
German/Italian
debriefing exercise with their teachers after the launch – discussing what conditions contributed to some rockets not launching and sharing what they would have done differently with the experiment. Incorporating their English Language Arts skills, the students then reflected on the entire process through a short writing assignment.

Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere. As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on
Facebook (see above). It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers. Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life. Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience
those glorious sunsets and shorelines? And summer is indeed the perfect time for all of the above. Work hard to play hard, right? Well this is the season to take those vacation days, even if it’s only to catch up on your reading or start watching a new TV series. For those more adventurous among us, take a trip to NYC, or Fire Island, or Montauk… pick a direction, and just go. Make it your mission this summer to find the inspiration that has been missing from your life. And once you find it – write about it, take pictures of it, find some new way to capture it… and savor it.

The Babylon IDA encourages the students to excel academically and then enter the local workforce and help maintain the economic stability of the Town of Babylon. The Babylon IDA Board Members announced they would double the original $500 scholarship and awarded the students with a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship money is given to the students and is to aid them in continuing their vocational education.

Babylon High School student Timothy Martin recently received his Eagle Scout ranking - the highest rank attainable in the Boy
Scouting program - after completing a thorough application process and an extensive service project. With the help of the
Babylon Village Historical Society and several elected and village officials, Timothy creating a walking tour video showcasing 18 historically significant sites located in Babylon. The video has been made available on YouTube and will be used in the education center for the Babylon Village Historical Society. Future plans for the effort are being considered, which include transforming the video into a mobile phone application that guides people through the village and shows them videos and pictures of the points of interest.

A Better Place A gardening effort between the West Babylon Junior High School Community Service Club and Daisy Troop 1022 not only improved the school courtyard, but assisted in the younger girls’ earning of the Golden Honey
Bee Award. The goal for receiving this coveted award is to make the world a better place through a gardening project. Chip DeGennaro of DeGennaro’s Landscaping generously donated flowers for the group to plant and
showed the students how to properly plant them in the courtyard. Not only did all of the participants have a wonderful time, the courtyard was beautifully planted in time for the eighth-grade dance.

On Saturday, July 12th, BVAC will present Summer Concert at the Conklin House featuring “The Amigos Band” on the Conklin House lawn. The music begins at 8:15 p.m. Rockin’ accordion solos, daredevil harmony singing, and wild western-wear have tajken THE AMIGOS BAND from sold-out shows at Lincoln Center to the
Philadelphia Folk Festival and Nashville’s Music City Roots. The Amigos have recently returned from a 6-week tour of South Eaast Asia where, as U.S. Department of State musical ambassadors, they delivered their footstomping, accordian -infused Americana music blending folk, rock, zydeco/cajun and jazz. This event is free and opened to the public and is made possible in part through funding from Suffolk County Department of Economic
Development and Planning. Bring a chair and a friend and enjoy this great music under the stars in Babylon Village. On Sunday, July 13th, BVAC will presents “Puppets In The Park” at Argyle Park, east of the 911 Memorial, BVAC will present WonderPuppets, a multi-generational interactive puppet show. The puppeteer has been featured on Nickelodeon, performed at Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Show
times are 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. and are free. Bring a chair and a smile. This program is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regents program of the New York State Council of the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and is administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc. and membership. at the Conklin House. On July 24th, July 31st, August 7th and August 14th, Edward Lee will instruct young community members (age 9-15) in the art of drawing, cartooning and collage making, zen doodling at the Conklin House.
