abylon Memorial Grade School sixth-graders took part in a cross-curricular lesson on June 15th, counting down from 10 to blastoff as they took their individually designed rockets and launched them in the field outside of the school. The students were charged with constructing their rocket, along with a parachute set to deploy on descent. Congratulations to all the participants on a job well done.

Volunteers are needed for the annual Good Shepherd Hospice/ Bob Sweeney Camp H.O.P.E., a two day bereavement camp for children who have lost a loved one and their surviving caregivers. The camp program, sponsored jointly by Catholic Health Services’ Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation, will be held on July 17th and 18th on the grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport. Children who have suffered the loss of an immediate family member are accompanied to the camp by a surviving parent or caregiver and all are offered the opportunity to identify, explore and share their grief experiences with other grieving families in a variety of activities.

Speed of Light Sixth-graders at Babylon Memorial Grade School tested their environmental ingenuity as they designed, engineered and raced their own solar-powered cars on June 17th. During their environmental engineering enrichment course, the
students learned about the environment and the impact of pollution. They explored alternate forms of clean energy. After discussing how photovoltaic cells work and their current uses in realworld technology, students designed, engineered and
constructed a solar energy race car as a culminating activity. Race day activities were postponed due to some cloud coverage but the sixth-graders were still impressed with their engineering skills.
TOB SCHOLARSHIPS - On June 22nd, at the Wyandanch Fire House, the Fire Chiefs Association of The Town of Babylon, President John Coughlin along with Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman, Deputy Supervisor Antonio Martinez presented scholarships to five High School Seniors from the Town of Babylon who will be attending college this coming September.

Answering the Call Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre recently joined with members of the Town’s Veterans’ Advisory Board and hosted a ceremony to honor local high school graduates who are going on to serve in the military. 31 total students from the Town of Babylon will be joining the ranks of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory were also in attendance to commend the graduates. Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Augusto L. Tavernier, who currently resides in Brentwood, delivered remarks at the ceremony. CSM Tavernier served as a squad leader and cannon crewman for the 5th Battalion 5th Field Artillery, and served for 24 years as a Military Policeman. While serving our country, CSM Tavernier earned more than a dozen awards and decorations including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Ribbon. Councilwoman Gordon, a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves who was deployed four times, wished the young men and women the best and thanked them for answering the call to serve their country. Each of the graduates was presented with an official Town of Babylon proclamation in their honor. Three Babylon JuniorSenior High School students – Matthew McGaley, Andrew Szuchy and Jack Hartigan, along with their childhood friend Emmett Chapey – participated in a 30-mile bike ride to benefit Feed the Children on May 21st. Starting in East Hampton and finishing in Montauk, the foursome completed their journey in less than three hours. The boys surpassed their
initial goal of $15,000, raising $15,770 which will allow Feed the Children to send a truck filled with enough food and essentials to provide help for 400 Long Island families. In mid-August, the boys will work with Feed the Children to personally package and distribute boxes of food to specific families. The fundraising idea began after the four boys saw a notice in their

Riding for a Cause parish bulletin looking for gift card donations for struggling families in their community. They chose Feed the Children because it offers domestic programs that provide both food and education for children in need. Feed the Children collects the food and supplies and works directly with other organizations to help needy families on Long Island.

Swimming into Summer By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”
and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly
shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.
