AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE HONOR SOCIETY - Due to staff and student efforts, the Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s American Sign Language Club has expanded its reach by creating their own chapter of the American Sign Language Honor Society. In mid-May, the first members of the Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s chapter of the American Sign Language Honor Society were inducted into the society and pledged their oath to continue their studies of ASL and the Deaf Community. The district would like to thank ASL instructor Dr. Alesia Olsen for working all year to establish this chapter and welcoming students into this distinguished society. The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. With their raw materials at their disposal, the students cooked and baked their signature dish in class and then plated their dish the following day for the “selling day.” All teachers are invited to the classroom to vote on the best marketing scheme, along with choosing one product to purchase with mock currency. After the sales were made, the students counted their profit and paid back Ms. Schwartz for the initial “money” she invested. It’s a great project, and the students are not only learning so much along the way, but they are having a great time while doing it,” said Ms. Schwartz.

School Sails Full Steam Ahead On May 8, Babylon Memorial Grade School faculty, staff, students and their families came together to celebrate achievements in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics during the school’s inaugural “STEAM Night.” Held in both the school’s gymnasium and cafeteria, attendees were introduced to a world of boundless STEAMoriented opportunities, including, but not limited to, Ozobot stations, Lego building stations, book and plastic cup tower building, creating launchable paper rockets and designing “pom pom poppers.” Throughout the hallways, student work from the school year

was on full display, highlighting the excellent work produced both in the classroom setting and in the after-school STEAM Club. Within the school’s computer lab, stations were set up as students were able to engage in collaborative computer coding activities on the Smart Board and create their very own interactive videos on iPads utilizing green screen technology. Additionally, studentvolunteers from BabylonJunior Senior High School showcased their achievements in robotics, and were even able to grant the younger students the opportunity to maneuver the robots themselves via wireless remote controls.

Sixth grade student Amiram Cameau is credited with designing the excellent STEAM Night Logo, which was featured on posters, flyers, along with the official STEAM Night T-shirts that teachers wore throughout the course of the night. The district would like to the thank the multitude of community members, district faculty and staff members, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students and the volunteers from the Babylon K-6 ParentTeacher Association for all of their efforts toward making the evening such a resounding success.

DeLuca Earns ‘Be Victorious Award’ The North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr Elementary School is proud to announce that Nicholas Steil from Mr. Ierardi’s class is the 2019 recipient of the Victoria Vega “Be Victorious Award.” This award was created in memory of Mrs. Victoria Vega, who was a very

prominent social worker at the school. This honor is presented to a student who embodies the spirit of Mrs. Vega. Nicholas is polite, brave and mature, and carries a great attitude. He enjoys learning and being a part of the school community. He has shown all who

know him what it means to face adversity and pushes forward even during the most challenging of moments. His name has been engraved on the “Be Victorious” plaque, which is hung in the lobby of the school.

A Night Of Celebrations During the Babylon School District Board of Education meeting held on June 10, several staff members and students were recognized for their

efforts. To begin the night’s recognitions, Babylon Junior-Senior High School student Tara O’Rourke was presented with a token of

appreciation in honor of being awarded the Long Island Special Education Administrator Association Jodi Shapiro Memorial Scholarship. Additionally,

High School Class of 2019 valedictorian Dylan Pané and salutatorian Pavani Kumar were recognized for their accomplishments. Both students obtained this high honor for their exceptional academic record, commitment to success and diligent learning throughout their careers at the Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Babylon Junior-Senior High School mathematics teacher Robert Richardelli, who received the New York State Senate District 4 Teacher of the Year Award, was presented with

a token of appreciation in recognition of his excellent teaching methods. Babylon School District Board of Education trustee Dominic P. Bencivenga, who recently concluded his tenure as a member the board, was presented with an engraved plaque commemorating his nine years of service. Additionally, a number of staff members spanning all district buildings were presented as candidates for tenure, and were congratulated by all in attendance for their stunning accomplishment.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE HONOR SOCIETY - Due to staff and student efforts, the Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s American Sign Language Club has expanded its reach by creating their own chapter of the American Sign Language Honor Society. In mid-May, the first members of the Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s chapter of the American Sign Language Honor Society were inducted into the society and pledged their oath to continue their studies of ASL and the Deaf Community. North Babylon School District is proud to announce that North Babylon High School senior Astrid Bucaro received the Science Teachers Association of New York State Excellence in Science award for her outstanding accomplishments in the subject. She was nominated by AP biology and science research teacher Ms. Annette Kuruc. Her accomplishments include being enrolled in the school’s science research program from

grades 10-12, where she did the majority of her research that focuses on the effects of nicotinamide riboside on the lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster and C. elegans respectively. This past year, she also conducted research in microbiology. She tested the effects of mannose on the growth of Streptococcus salivarius, which has the potential to be beneficial to oral health. This experiment was recognized at the Long Island Science Congress and ranked as Excellence with

High Honors. Astrid plans to continue her research in the fall, where she will attend Stony Brook University as a biology major on a pre-dental track. She will also graduate from North Babylon High School amongst the top 25 in her class as an AP scholar with honors. The district congratu-lates Astrid on her achievements and wishes her continued success throughout her college career.
