Motorcyclists from across Long Island will head out on the highway on Sunday, July 20th, for the Sticky Finger Twilight Run, an annual charity event to raise funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The 30-mile ride, presented by the Great South Bay Music Festival and WBAB, begins at Dave & Buster’s Grand Sports Café, 261 Airport Plaza, in Farmingdale and ends at the Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue. Registration is at 3 p.m., with kickstands up at 5 p.m. There is a $30 entry fee for riders and a $30 fee for each passenger. Registration includes a commemorative patch, one raffle chance for all Early Bird pre-registrants only, and admission for the rider/passenger to the Great South Bay Music Festival. The Sunday line-up of 20 acts will be headlined B.B. King and includes Commander Cody and Zebra lead vocalist and guitarist Randy Jackson. The school’s NAHS has partnered with the Memory Project twice a year since 2006 and has created more than 100 portraits to date. Over the years, the finalized pieces have been shared with children in Cambodia, Haiti, Nicaragua and Burma.

The Good Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before
her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All
situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever. These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

Top Scholars Babylon High School seniors Daniel Lum and Sara Mikovic have been named the Class of 2014 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Daniel will be attending Stevens Institute of Technology this fall to major in mechanical engineering. Sara will be attending Lafayette College this fall, where she will major in chemical engineering. During his time at Babylon, Daniel has been immersed in extracurricular activities while maintaining his weighted GPA of 104.3. He is the president of the
student council and active member of the class cabinet, National Honor Society, National Science, Spanish and Business and Marketing honor societies and math team. He has been named an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and placed on the Principal’s List each year of high school. He is also active in the community, helping to raise money for various organizations, such as JDRF and the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. Sara has been an active participant in the science research program and holds
a 103.85 weighted GPA. She earned third-place honors during this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair for her original research and is the founding member of the school’s Science Olympiad and Science Club. Sara is also an accomplished musician, secretary of the school’s French and Science National honor societies, as well as a member of the National Honor Society. She volunteers at several local organizations, including as a Sunday school teacher.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board to welcome the newly appointed ambassadors of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Committee at their first meeting. The committee is made up of residents and

While it seems so easy for children and teachers alike to “check out” mentally during the final days of June, it was refreshing to see how engaged and enthusiastic all of the students and staff were after all of the hard work that went into putting together such a lovely day of curriculum-sharing as one of the last hurrahs of the school year! With a well-defined and simple approach to the Core Curriculum at SSCM this past year, it’s no small wonder that 100% of SSCM graduating students were accepted to their choice of high schools, as they are year after year. Students felt calm and well-prepared about being tested on the material and parents and teachers alike were proud to see the not one SSCM student felt the need to opt out of the Core Curriculum testing this Spring!

SEPTA Honors Continued From 21 Ms. Ratto will utilize the device to enhance the multi-sensory learning approach currently implemented within her classroom at Babylon Memorial Grade School. In addition to the technology presentation, SEPTA also honored the
outstanding educational achievements of one graduating senior during the meeting. The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, was presented with a $500 scholarship based on an essay describing how, with the support of school-related resources, the student was able to achieve goals.
SEPTA thanks the community for supporting its fundraising efforts throughout the year and helping to ensure that these presentations were possible. The organization is planning future fundraisers to aid in the purchase of a SmartBoard for the high school selfcontained classroom.
Across The Curriculums curriculum, the students researched the time period during library sessions to understand the important role letter writing had in the soldiers’ lives as well as the censorship that took place with messages sent home. After studying the history behind the medal of honor and other distinguished honors bestowed upon soldiers, the students had the chance to create their own medals. Using clay, they sculpted their pieces and inscribed the attributes each one would
honor, as well as selected a corresponding ribbon to distinguish the original pieces. To provide an individual perspective on the material, art teacher Pat Stork shared her family’s story of service during these historical wars. Finally, writing as soldiers, the class penned letters to their family members and took turns censoring the work of their classmates following the protocols that were in place during the time period they were studying.

all third-graders traveled to Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, where they enjoyed an assembly program, film presentation and question-and-answer session. Following the gradelevel presentation, Mr. Belliveau visited each third-grade classroom to host a geometric patterns art workshop. Using 8x8 cardstock paper, pencils
and a ruler, each student created their own piece of geometric art similar to those found within the Islamic culture. To individualize their art pieces, the students used crayons and colored pencils to finish their product. To complete the program, the individual pieces were tied together to create one large class geometric pattern.
