There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says William Kent, Director of Long Island Hearing.“ At Long Island Hearing, we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face, however in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s diagnosis and any hearing loss should be addressed,” says Kent. “By addressing the hearing loss, we can help improve quality-oflife for those who have Alzheimer’s and help them live as fully as possible.” Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to a wide range of physical and emotional conditions,

EXHIBIT UNVEILED - The unveiling of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame’s exhibit was recently held at MacArthur Airport. Portraits and displays of prominent athletes, coaches, and other sports personalities that made a name for themselves in the Islip community now line the walls along the path that travelers take while embarking and disembarking aircraft. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame used to be housed in a permanent location, but was forced to close due to a lack of funds. Now the Hall of Fame organization is establishing exhibits at various locations throughout Suffolk County. The men and women featured at the MacArthur Airport exhibit are all specific to Islip Town, but the Hall of Fame’s focus is on the accomplishments of Suffolk County athletes as a whole.

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

Opportunity For Acclimation In an effort to ease the transition for incoming seventh-graders this fall, Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently hosted an engaging orientation program for the students and their parents. The school’s upperclassmen aided the administration in welcoming the sixthgraders during a morning transition program. Attendees were provided

with an overview of the school and took part in several activities around the building. They worked in small groups to complete a scavenger hunt aimed at familiarizing the students with key areas of the building, completed social skill building activities and discussed ways in which to succeed academically. Additionally, the students embarked on guided tours of the school and visited select classrooms.

During an evening event, parents met with members of the administration to learn about the building’s seventh-grade requirements, academics, extracurricular activities and expectations. Parents were also provided with a packet of information that contained relevant information to help their children make a smooth transition to the juniorsenior high school in September.

Beach Clean-Up Babylon High School students worked to beautify their neighboring beaches by taking part in this year’s Save The Beaches spring cleanup and beach grass planting program. The local nonprofit coastal environmental group provides community service events each year for Babylon High School students who enjoy the

beaches and want to volunteer to help preserve them in the fall and spring. As part of this initiative, three groups from the high school visited local parklands this spring. Members of the school’s Thoreau Society and their adviser Dr. Mark Malaskzczyk helped to plant beach grass bulbs on the dunes of Oak

Beach, previously heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The building’s varsity and junior varsity lacrosse teams, coached by Timothy Harrison, collected debris from Gilgo Beach. Lastly, the Honor Society students worked with adviser Jeff Kenney to help collect almost 350 pounds of trash.

Photo provided by: Babylon School District The detection and reporting of Asian longhorned beetles by students at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District has become important to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During an assembly, USDA representatives taught the students about the physical and destructive characteristics of this insect that has started to invade deciduous trees on Long Island, including the maple, elm, willow, poplar and horse chestnut. “We are relying on children like you to locate the beetle and save the trees,” Joseph Gittleman,

USDA New York project manager and “chief beetle buster,” told students. “Make sure that if you see any signs of an Asian longhorned beetle, you alert your parents and teachers so they can contact the USDA.” During the assembly, master storyteller Jonathan Kruk engaged and educated the students with “Tale of the Beetles,” in which he expressively described the symptoms to look for in an infested tree and the characteristics of this colorful insect. He explained that the beetle is black with white spots, has blue legs and is equipped

with extra-long antennae that search for bark to eat. Students also learned that the beetle leaves holes large enough to fit a finger, sawdust on the ground (frass), and dead or bare limbs at the top of the tree. Infested trees are cut down by the USDA, ground up and replaced with saplings to handle the infestation. After the assembly, the students were given a hunt project packet to help them identify trees that may be blighted by the Asian longhorned beetle, along with USDA contact information. The Board of Education encourages the community to become informed voters by reading the budget presentations on the district’s website at www.wbschools. org. Households will be receiving a newsletter dedicated to the revised 2014-2015 school budget. The community is also encouraged to attend the district’s budget hearing on Tuesday, June 10 at 8 p.m. at the administration building. All residents are encouraged to vote on June 17th, 2014 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

During the May 28th public meeting, the Board of Education adopted a revised school budget that is within the district’s allowable tax levy cap of 1.3617 percent and supports instructional programs and services with limited reductions. It also qualifies residents to be eligible to receive the New York State real property tax rebate scheduled for distribution this fall. This reduced budget totaling $99,308,888 is $1.3 million less than the proposed budget defeated on May 20th, 2014, and requires a majority vote (50 percent + 1) to pass. The budget vote
