t was a race to the finish, or at least to keep from sinking, as Babylon Junior-Senior High School students in Mary Beth Schappert’s Project-Based Learning and STEAM classes competed in the first Cardboard Boat Regatta. The regatta was the culmination of a project in support of a new STEM/STEAM initiative. Those with the fastest times, best design, most school spirit and best “sinking” were recognized.

Teeny Award Nominees St. John the Baptist DHS is proud to announce that seven cast members from our production of The Little Mermaid have been nominated for Teeny Awards. The Teeny Awards celebrate high school students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the arts. Principal Nan Doherty was elated to hear of the nominations. She stated “It is always a thrill to see our student’s work acknowledged and celebrated.” In addition, St. John’s musical ensemble was

Grand Prize Winner St. John the Baptist Junior, Cindy McCabe, claimed the Grand Prize in the Gilda’s Club It’s Always Something Teen Essay Contest with her piece entitled Pancreatic Cancer. The contest is open to any high school student in New York City or on Long Island and is held in memoriam of the late Gilda

Radner. Ms. Radner was one of the great comedic minds of the 20th century who died at the young age of 42 after a lengthy bout with ovarian cancer. The essay itself must explain how cancer has touched the student’s life. Cindy’s work was selected as the Grand Prize winner out of the hundreds of students

who submitted essays. Principal Nan Doherty stated, “Gilda Radner lives on in so many unique ways and funny memories. So it is wonderful for Cindy’s essay to be selected and celebrated by Gilda’s Club who recognizes teenage writers in this way.”

And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them ﬂying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their ﬂight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Sarah was presented with an award at the eighth annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration at the Vajaradhammapadip Buddhist Temple & Thai Cultural Center in Centereach on May 14th. STEAM Lessons new STEM/STEAM initiative. Using just cardboard and duct tape, 16 teams of students were challenged to design and engineer a boat that could sail two people across the length of the ﬂoating dock in the Gilgo Beach Marina. After weeks of applying their design and engineering skills, students took their

completed boats to the dock on May 26th for race day. Two students paddled inside their boats and did their best to stay aﬂoat. Those with the fastest times, best design, most school spirit and best “sinking” were recognized with cardboard trophies.

Maria DelVecchio’s business students at North Babylon High School completed the Suffolk Federal Scholars program, an engaging and interactive online education curriculum, and were awarded certificates to recognize their achievements. The students were joined by President and CEO of Suffolk Federal Credit Union William O’Brien, Superintendent of North Babylon School District Glen Eschbach,

North Babylon High School Principal Jonathan Klomp, Assistant Principal Stephanie Hasandras, Ms. DelVecchio and distinguished guests in attendance. Earlier in the spring, students in Ms. DelVecchio’s College Accounting and Business Law class received a visit from the vice president of marketing of the SFCU. The students, who are part of the University in the High School program at North Babylon and

may elect to take classes for college credit, were prepared with college and career questions. They then engaged in conversation about Mr. O’Brien’s inspiring ascent to president of SFCU, and they learned that they, too, are capable of an equally remarkable rise to success. The district congratulates the students for successfully completing the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program and earning their certificates of achievement from SFCU.

cultures of the merengue, foxtrot, rumba, tango, swing and waltz. On the 20th lesson, students will dress elegantly to present a culmination of all they have learned in a ballroom performance. The program, hosted by affiliate organization CoDanceCo, home of Dancing Classrooms Long Island, is led in collaboration with students’ teachers and

an instructor from the dance group. By learning about the origins and proper application of steps in each dance, students are fostering the virtues of respect, teamwork, confidence and politeness. Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizens”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus firemen, policemen and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorably discharged from the military, the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers for proof of service. This being done, and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is closed, the entire casket maybe draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket maybe draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open, and only the stars are to show when flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole, it is always to be placed at the left of the casket.
