BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick
off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance. In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway. Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of
seasoned professionals both for their in-house Argyle keeps moving east through Europe for staff, and for the production teams hired for Spring Awakening, catching a glimpse into the torments and explorations of youth in their individual productions. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

During the May 7th Babylon School District Board of Education meeting, two Babylon School District staff members were celebrated by the community for both their accomplishments and for their commitment to enhancing education for students. Babylon Elementary School first-grade teacher Yanirez Rodriguez was presented with a certificate courtesy of the Board of Education for being recognized by Sen. Phil Boyle as a “Teacher of Excellence” at his annual Teacher of Excellence Awards Dinner. Ms. Rodriguez has been with the district for more than 10 years and is credited with being involved in multiple district committees, and greatly assisting with English as a New Language students in her native Spanish language in an effort to build confidence among students. “She is always championing the finest instructional practices to advance student growth,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “She makes sure that the students meet their benchmarks as firstgrade learners, and, more importantly, she really knows how to make that connection with parents and families of the students that she has in her class.” Additionally, former Babylon Junior-Senior High School football coach Hans Wiederkehr was recognized for being inducted into the 2018 Suffolk County Sports Athletic Hall of Fame. During his time as coach from 1988-2002, the football team reached the playoffs 12 times and won nine league titles. Mr. Wiederkehr

After making it through the first round of judging, four West Babylon Senior High School actors and actresses will be competing in the final round of the 2018 Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance, the New York Chapter of the Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Fifty students from across
New York were chosen for the final round of competition. The district congratulates the following students: David Grant (Chairman); Mackenzie Grimes (Princess Puffer); Danielle Del Orfano (Rosa Bud); and Amanda Riche (Edwin Drood). The four students will be competing based on their performances in the high
school’s musical, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” The students will be coached with industry professionals at a studio in New York City on May 19th. Following this, a live stream of their culminating performance and announcement of winners will be found on Facebook. One female and one male will be named as winners.

Healthy Never Tasted So Good! All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult. The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. Most fast food restaurants focus on convenience and not nutrition. Nutrition is key to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that I have changed significantly since losing 110 lbs. The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the
pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week. They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrientdense ingredients, perfect for my needs. For my dining choice, I

chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining. those who served. “I challenge you to shake a veteran’s hand when you see one, and thank them for allowing you to have this freedom,” said Joseph. “Thank them for the sacrifices they have made, and for the ultimate sacrifices their comrades have made.” “It is imperative that we do not allow the knowledge of our history of this nation to fade away, both the good and the bad,” said Mr. Taylor. “If we are to understand why we are, and who we are, only then can we chart our nation’s course for the future.” Along with the members of Post 94, Babylon High School Class of 1945 alumnus Gabe Grenci was in attendance. Mr. Grenci served in the U.S. Army where he was discharged at the rank of staff sergeant, served at the Allied Forces headquarters in Caserta, Italy, and was both a friend and classmate of Rocco Grasso, whose name will forever remain on the plaque. The district would also like to recognize those alumni who served in the country’s armed forces – Tony Ciervo, John Dawley, Jerry Grant, Rich Villanueva and Jim Woods – along with the current Babylon Junior-Senior High School seniors committed to entering various branches of the military – Anthony Gerola, Szymon Giembic, Emma Iandoli, Ian Mikulicic, Nicholas Ruf and Sophia Sherman.
The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is

They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden! Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? MHAW has an upcoming event, which has sponsorship and vendor opportunities available! This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. The Memorial Day events in Babylon Village were truly amazing! At Babylon High School, the rededication of the restored original memorial plaque was a moving and inspirational experience. With students, veterans, educators, public officials and the media in attendance, side by side, honoring those who laid down their lives for our freedoms, the solidarity of the American heart was never more apparent. At our Memorial Day parade, that very heart once again soared, as an amazing turnout lined the entire parade route, start to finish. Thank you all for taking the time to honor our veterans! I was disappointed that the Art by the Falls event was washed out by bad weather. While the rain date on
Sunday was relatively dry, the ground was so soft that it precluded use of the park. The Babylon Village Arts Council has rescheduled the event for July 7th, and issued a call for artists. Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizen”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus fireman, policeman, and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorable discharged from the military the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veterans discharge papers for proof of service. This being done and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is open the entire casket may be draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket may be draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole it is always to be placed at the left of the casket. Lessons Take Flight As part of a crosscurricular science and math lesson, sixth-graders at West Babylon Junior High School were tasked with creating their own kites made up of polygons during their math lab class and then attempting to fly them.
Students in Kevin Delaney and Frank Ging’s math lab classes started their lesson by measuring the interior angles and finding the area and perimeter of their polygons. Next, they had to enlarge their blueprints and fabricate a kite that
could actually fly by determining the area and perimeter of the new kite. On May 21st and 22nd, the sixth-graders put their creations to the test by going outside to the back field of the school and testing to see their kites would take flight.
Once Upon a Time Students enrolled in Leah Weissinger’s first-grade class at Babylon Elementary School recently put on an enchanting theater performance, “Once Upon A Time,” for their fellow classmates, school staff and family members. The wonderful
performances included renditions of popular tales “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” “The Little Red Hen” and “The Fisherman and his Wife.” The entertaining event reinforced several key skills students have learned in class, including public speaking, reading fluency
and collaboration. “They worked hard practicing and remembering all their lines,” said Mrs. Weissinger. “They were brave and did a wonderful job; we are all so proud of our future actors and actresses.”
