The North Babylon School District is proud to announce that Robert Moses Middle School’s James Bulger won first place at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair for the sixth-
grade level. This achievement was based on his science project, “NanoRemediators: using nanotechnology to remediate oil spills.” He received a ribbon and a medal for his efforts
and the school was presented with a banner of acknowledgement. James will be honored for his success by the Legislator Tom Donnelly (District 17) at the Suffolk County Legislators meeting on June 4.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner. New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social
The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. North Babylon High School students adorned themselves with colored bracelets to help raise funds for the Pulsera Project. By purchasing the bracelets, or “pulseras” in Spanish, they raised $1,200 for the nonprofit organization, which helps support fair trade employment in Central America. The artists that craft these colorful pieces for the group also benefit from programs that include scholarships, healthcare, housing, legal services and personal
development. In addition, proceeds also fund a wide range of social impact programs in the country, such as education, women and youth empowerment, the social/economic crisis in Nicaragua, social enterprise and more. Ms. Colleen Cafiso’s Spanish class helped promote and sell the bracelets by creating flyers and selling the bracelets in the school store and at the craft fair. Prior to that, students read and watched short films about Nicaragua and learned about the
artists and communities in the country who are supported by the funds raised by the project. They were also educated on fair trade and the significance on impacting people’s lives in developing nations by purchasing from companies that value human dignity and equality. “Thank you to all who helped support and promote this great cause,” Ms. Cafiso said. “I am overjoyed at the positive response that this received from the school community.”

While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month. Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. The Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s Music Department recently returned from their fourday trip to Williamsburg, Virginia where they successfully performed in the World Strides Music Festival. A total of 144 students attended and represented the Senior High Chorus, Symphonic Winds, Senior High Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Senior High Band. All of the attending groups received a rating of Silver, and the Concert
Band, which was a combined group consisting of the Symphonic Winds and Senior High Band, who won first place in their respective category. In addition, studentmusician Sydney Altbacker received a Maestro Award, which is given out by the adjudicators to students “who display extraordinary musical ability and sensitivity.” To cap off the awards ceremony, Sydney also won the Ovation Award, the most prestigious student award
given out at the festival. It is given to a student whose contribution to their music program transcends the making of music; as the student represents that spirit of determination, inspiration and service to others that exists in all. “Mr. Kroll, Mr. Leech, Ms. Tomei and myself are so proud of all of the students and their accomplishments,” said Babylon School District Director of Fine Arts and Music Angela Turk.
