Working over the course of several months, the students had the chance to select an item of interest to them and conduct individual research projects to explore a scientific question they had about that topic.

This May, the district’s Board of Education and administration took time during its Board meeting to recognize several students for their recent achievements in the arts and sciences. With a large audience on hand in the auditorium at Babylon JuniorSenior High School, Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis and Board of Education President Dominic Bencivenga took to the podium to honor several student groups. First-grade students of South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District have been studying reptiles and recently had the opportunity to explore several species in their classroom. In addition to the reptiles, members of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County shared artifacts with students, including shed snakeskins and sea turtle shells. The lesson focused on conservation and provided information about several species of reptiles. During the interactive workshop, students were able touch snakes, a turtle and a variety of lizards. The lesson culminated in the first-graders collectively creating a list of the characteristics and adaptations they learned about and then using that list to write about their personal favorite reptiles.

Every month, the students of Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District reflect on a new character trait in support of their Bucket Filling Character Education program. During the month of May, students explored kindness. Every student had the opportunity to take part in a unique project that resulted in a visual reminder of the importance of being kind. Throughout the month, teacher Cara Kerr led the character education committee’s Kindness Flower initiative, in which students decorated “kindness flowers” with inspirational messages of how to be kind and why doing so is important. During their recess periods, members of the Santapogue student council worked with Mrs. Kerr to hang the flowers, creating a display in the lobby that promotes kindness throughout the school.

You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time. For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you. And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never
worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch. The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems. But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes. I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You
didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag? I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint. Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask. If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything? Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

Backyard soirees are a staple of summer for many families. Whether hosting a family reunion, a gathering of friends or a mix of both, such gatherings can be a great time to reconnect with your loved ones in a relaxing and natural setting. Hosting such gatherings might not require as much work as organizing a more formal get-together, but that doesn’t mean summer soirees don’t require a little work in advance of the guests’ arrival. That’s especially true if you plan to host the party outdoors in your yard, which will need a little TLC before guests arrive. The following are a few tips to get your yard ready before your next summer soiree. * Cut the grass and clear your walkways. Cutting the grass before guests arrive might seem like common sense, but try to do so a couple of days before the party. This gives you an extra day or so to clear the walkways of grass clippings, and it saves you the trouble of cutting the grass on the day of the party when you’re likely to have more pressing tasks to take care of. * Decorate your yard. Decorations are a staple of parties held indoors, so why not decorate your home’s exterior when hosting a get-together in the backyard? Use freshly cut flowers from your own garden as centerpieces on your patio furniture, or purchase flowers of various colors from your local florist to add a dash or two of color to the festivities. * Clear the yard of toys. Before guests arrive, clear the yard of the kids’ toys, putting them away so guests don’t injure themselves by stepping on errant action figures or skateboards left hidden in the grass. * Trim trees and shrubs around walkways. While a backyard barbecue is less

Don’t forget to trim trees and shrubs around the walkways so guests don’t feel like they’re on safari when coming to and from the backyard. * Make sure outdoor lighting is working properly. If you’re about to host your first event of the summer, inspect your home’s exterior lighting so everyone isn’t left sitting in the dark. Check patio lighting and replace any bulbs and make sure the lights along your walkways are functioning at full capacity so guests can safely navigate their way around the party. You may even want to string holiday lights around the patio to create a more laid-back ambiance in which guests can relax without lights beating down on them. * Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear. Backyard gatherings are a staple of summer. But even if such soirees are less formal, hosts still must survey their property and address any issues before guests arrive.

Grilled Vegetable Napoleons

cup olive oil large eggplant, cut in 12 slices (1/3-inch thick) medium zucchinis, cut in 24 slices (1/4-inch thick) large tomatoes, cut in 6 slices (1/3-inch thick) medium red onions, cut in 12 slices (1/3-inch thick) cup ricotta cheese Salt and pepper to taste teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped lb. mozzarella cheese, sliced 1/4-inch thick sprigs fresh rosemary
Directions Preheat barbecue and set on low. Brush vegetables with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and grill slowly until tender, turning once. Transfer the vegetables to a tray, arranging them in a single layer, and cover tightly with plastic wrap. The vegetables may be grilled a day in advance, and refrigerated after cooling. Bring the vegetables back to room temperature before proceeding. Assembly Stir together the ricotta, thyme, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Place one slice of eggplant on a lightly oiled grill sheet or foil pan. Spread 1 tablespoon of the ricotta mixture over the eggplant. Cover with 2 slices of zucchini, 1 slice of onion, 1 slice of mozzarella, 1 slice of tomato, and 2 slices of zucchini. Spread 1 tablespoon of the ricotta mixture over the onion, and top with another slice of eggplant. Repeat this procedure with the remaining vegetables to make 5 more stacks. Insert a wooden skewer through the centre of each stack to create a hole from top to bottom. Remove the bottom leaves from each rosemary sprig, leaving one inch of leaves on the top. Insert 1 sprig into the centre hole in each napoleon, and return to the barbecue. Heat for about 10 minutes on low, or until mozzarella is melted and vegetables are warmed through.

Second-grade students of Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently enjoyed a visit from members of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. During the annual visit, the biologists shared with students a variety of sea life found in the oceans and bays of Long Island, such as starfish and horseshoe crabs. In support of the secondgrade science curriculum that explores animal life and habitats, students were provided with a hands-on opportunity to obtain facts and information about the marine life. “This is a great way to learn,” said second-grader Jessica. “It was really fun to see the animals and even better to be able to touch them.”

MUSICAL IDOL Babylon Memorial Grade School student Aubrey Alvino has been selected as one of six lucky individuals to perform the national anthem before a Long Island Ducks game during the 2013 season. Aubrey will make her debut during the team’s game on September 11th at Bethpage Ballpark. To achieve this honor, Aubrey participated in a live audition process that called for her to sing a 90-second rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before a panel of judges and fellow contestants. Do you or a family member drive while texting? Maybe you should think twice. The recently approved NYS budget will bring strong penalties for distracted driving. The new provisions will strengthen state efforts to crackdown on texting while driving, and other cell phone use while driving. It will target frequent offenders with harsher penalties for repeat violations. Police have issued 26,000 texting while driving violations. The strong penalties will help the urgent need to improve the safety on our roadways, and to call attention to the lives that can be saved by efforts to end distracted driving. Distracted driving has forced far too many families to endure preventable tragedies. By cracking down on texting and cell phone use behind the wheel we can prevent avoidable and unfortunate traffic deaths, improve safety on our roads and save lives. As questions spanned a variety of areas, including general news, arts and entertainment, science and health, business and finance, and sports, the students were required to be well-versed in all content areas. “These questions are extremely challenging, and on average, 80 percent [24] of the questions come from the general news and business and finance categories,” Mr. Fasciani
explained. All students in grades five and six competed in the initial meet, with the top five scorers from each class moving on to the additional three meets. Nationwide, there were 18 schools that participated on the fifth-grade level and 33 schools on the sixthgrade level.
