There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

Continuing a 29 year tradition, the Festival will highlight authentic Greek dishes and pastries, Hellenic youth dance performances, and live Greek Music nightly. Thousands have indulged in the rich flavors and hearty portions of the Festival’s menu. Passing down the culinary traditions of their parents and grandparents, the organizers of the 2014 Hamptons Greek Festival offer Greek style chicken, pastitsio, spanakopita, souvlaki, gyro and much more. Complementing the main fare are Greek pastries that were praised by Newsday who wrote that its “favorite source in Astoria doesn’t hold a candle, frankly, to the kourabiedes (butter cookies) made by the Church ladies. Families with children of all ages are welcome at the Festival, where they will find a children and young people’s entertainment area filled with fun rides and games. All are invited to enjoy the food, take in the culture, and dance to music. The 2014 Hamptons Greek Festival will give attendees the opportunity to tour the new beautiful Byzantine Church which has been described by Southampton Press as “one of the best Houses in Town.” The Hamptons Greek Festival: Thursday, July 10th through Sunday, July 13th. Festival hours are: 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Sunday, 12 noon to 9 p.m. Everyday is Bracelet Day. Middle school students from Saints Cyril and Methodius School (SSCM) in Deer Park had the opportunity to participate in the twelfth annual Catholic Middle School Mock Trial Program, hosted by St. John’s University School of Law. Hundreds gathered to witness these young minds in action as they tackled a civil case and honed their public speaking skills. The program, organized by Michael A. Simons, Dean of St. John’s Law, and Paul Clagnaz, Principal of St. Brigid/Our Lady of

Together with Catholic Middle Schoolers from 15 other schools around Long Island, SSCM students showcased their ability to think on their feet and analyze complex situations while questioning witnesses and taking their mock oaths quite seriously. All in all, with an early morning wake-up call on a Saturday for the hundreds of students and families who participate, this day is worth every minute of lost Saturday morning sleep and a great debt of gratitude is owed to those who selflessly take the time to coach the students, organize the event and give of their valuable time to invest in the future of these hard-working middle school children from Catholic Schools throughout the island. As part of their nonfiction unit of study, Babylon Elementary School kindergarten students in Jenn Brooks’ and Keri Rossano’s classes have learned about the publishing process in a hands-on way. During their writer’s workshops, the students learned about the differences between nonfiction and fiction and

sharpened their creative writing skills by penning original books. Tying the lesson into the grade’s science curriculum, the students used their newfound knowledge of aquatic life to pen books about life “under the sea” and lessons about the rainforest to craft stories about the animals found in this protected land area. The multi-disciplinary

project enabled the students to practice the writing process – from creating drafts to editing – and sample the publishing process as they transformed their short stories into a book. To celebrate their pieces, the two classes hosted a read-aloud where they shared their completed books with their peers.

Babylon Elementary School first-grade students in Leah Weissinger’s class brought several familiar stories to life as a culminating activity to their English language arts study of folktales. As part of the Common Core curriculum and reader’s theater workshop, the students learned about the literary genre and the

morals that these pieces teach readers. They focused on the famous tales of “Too Much Noise!,” “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” and “The Little Red Hen.” In addition to the literacy study of the pieces, the students also worked to strengthen their fluency, reading comprehension, expression and public speaking skills, and they

transformed the written word into three short plays. During the performances, which were held during the day for students and at night for families, each student assumed the role of one of the folktale characters and shared the tale’s age-old lessons with audiences.

Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizen”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus fireman, policeman and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorable discharged from the military the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veterans discharge papers for proof of service. This being done and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is closed the entire casket maybe draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket maybe draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole it is always to be placed at the left of the casket.
