The Scleroderma Foundation/Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will hold the 12th Annual Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Long Island walk in Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 1st. Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Denise Gesuale and Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for an lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research. The walk helps bring awareness to scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue - for which there is no known cause and no cure impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the tri-state area. Food, raffles, and entertainment round out a great day in the park! Participants can register to walk or sponsor a walker online at http://walks. SclerodermaTriState. org before the event. The registration fee is $20 for participants 16 years and older, $5 for children ages 5 to 15, and children under five are free. Registration forms and donations can also be mailed to the Tri-State office. Day of event registration is $25 for participants 16 years and older. All pre-registered participants receive a T-shirt, and awards are given to the individual and team that raise the most money. The Long Island walk and area support groups are two means of helping people live with this mysterious and frequently disabling disease. June is Scleroderma Awareness Month, and includes the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma walks across the United States, and a website, www. sclerodermaawareness. org, that provides ideas to help supporters take action, such as snapping selfies to be used in an

Regarded as the premiere high school film festival in New York, it showcases and highlights the film making talents of students throughout the tri-state area and across the country. SJB students Caroline Herrera of Deer Park and Phineas Reichert of East Northport created the digital animation for Life Of A Paper Clip. Their Computer Generated Imagery teacher Ms. Keri Kelly stated “I am so impressed with the work and determination these students put into their stop motion project. Phineas and Caroline are two talented individuals and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them.” Mr. Carl Coulanges, a teacher at SJB and the moderator of the SJB Media News Network offered; “the Hendrick Hudson Film Festival was a great experience for the SJB Media News Network. Our videos were selected out of more than 200 entries. These students are very dedicated and work extremely hard in producing content not only for the SJB community, but also for the world to see. Nearly 5,000 walkers descended on Jones Beach on Sunday for the fifth annual Every Woman Matters Walk: A Walk For Women and Their Families hosted by the North ShoreLIJ Health System and the Commerce and Industry Council. The walk benefits the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Katz Women’s Hospitals, specialty hospitals and programmatic initiatives that are transforming women’s healthcare. Alexa Tiven and her sister, Nicole Mancini, were among the participants. They were walking in memory of their mother, Dianne Tiven, who lost her battle with cancer. “This event is very important to us as sisters, as aunts, as moms. Every woman matters!” said Alexa Tiven. Valhalla is a 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Learning Is Ducky As part of their science curriculum, secondgrade students at Tooker Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been learning about the lifecycle of ducks. The students conducted independent research on this interesting animal in the computer lab and

learned many interesting facts such as they are omnivorous and have an egg tooth to help them break out of their shell while hatching. Of course, for the students, the most exciting part of their study was watching the ducks hatch. As the ducks broke out of

their shells between May 6 and 11, the students named their fluffy friends Peep, Lewis, Fuzzy and Fluffy. They even watched their ducklings run around and take a bath. The ducks were then returned to a local farm and were adopted by willing families.

Stock Market Games Two teams of seniors in Diana Simulcik’s economics class at North Babylon High School finished in the top 10 of more than 400 teams across Long Island in the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association’s Stock Market Games. The games are part of a 10-week program used to introduce students to the financial markets, with an integrated curriculum that teaches them math, economics,

and the importance of long-term saving and investing. Teams of three to five participants made a hypothetical investment of $100,000 in real stocks, bonds and mutual funds. “Students were introduced to the market through daily lessons and total immersion,” said Ms. Simulcik. “In all my years of participating in the program, we have never had two teams place within the top 10. The students made good, smart

choices.” Stocks purchased by the students included Apple, Cisco Systems, AT&T, Caterpillar and McDonald’s. Placing second across Long Island with $108,831.80 was the team of Scott Langdon, Michael Reda and John Scocca. In eighth place was the team of Ja’Saun Boneparte, Fabienne Edouard, Jasmine Jones, Nicole Magnan and Antoinette Smith, finishing with $105,793.78.

When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s signiﬁcance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

Legislator Tom Cilmi delivered the keynote address at the West Babylon High School Principal’s Quality Achievement Awards Ceremony. Cilmi is a graduate of West Babylon School District. The annual awards ceremony recognizes leadership and exceptionalism among ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students in a variety of areas of study including but not limited to language, music and the arts, English, history, math, science, athletics and vocational education. Detailing some of his memories from school, Cilmi thanked faculty, administration and staff for the work they do saying, “Neither greater purpose nor greater rewards exist than in the education of a child.” He went on to talk about the relevance of school and the importance of relationships throughout life. He talked about the “twists and turns” throughout his career and how keeping an

opened mind and building relationships has helped him succeed. Cilmi said, “In many ways, those years made me who I am as a person. Build more relationships…more bridges, you will cross more rivers and explore more opportunities.” Cilmi spoke about being a victim of bullying in junior high school and overcoming it. Two stories from high school sparked laughter among students. Cilmi described how his biology teacher threw a dead frog out the door in an example of what not to do in lab. He also told of how his physics teacher poked fun at Cilmi’s acne, asking him if his guitar blew up in his face. The 1982 graduate charged the students with this final remark. “Fellow Eagles, your experiences here at West Babylon have given you a great foundation on which to build your bridges. Your education here has given you all the basic tools to begin building those bridges. The rest is up to you.”
