NEWS AROUND THE TOWN Babylon Village Chamber Hosts Spring Fling On Saturday, May 15th, the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce hosted their Spring Fling shopping event along Deer Park Avenue! In addition to promotions and sales at many Chamber businesses, the Spring Fling took

full advantage of the beautifully seasonal weather and included a music and arts festival as well as a Street Chalk design contest on James Street. Judging the contest was Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon

Village Mayor Mary Adams, and New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso. The event was made possible by the work of Chamber President Kelly Peckholdt and all her members, as well as the Village of Babylon.

BABYLON HIBERNIANS COLLECT FOOD FOR VETERANS – On Sunday, May 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined his Brother Hibernians of Division 2 in Babylon for a food drive benefiting the United Veterans Beacon House. The Beacon House assists more than 800 veterans and veteran families in receiving specialized services needed for their return to independence.

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills

BABYLON VILLAGE MARKS HISTORIC SITES - On Saturday, April 24th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined the Village of Babylon Historical & Preservation Society and members of the Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club for the unveiling of two historical site plaques. The first plaque was placed in recognition of the Marconi Shed, where communications with ocean vessels was conducted back in 1902. The shed also played host to a number of training courses for radio operators. The second plaque commemorates the first 50 mile auto race sanctioned by the American Auto Club in 1900. Ironically, the winner drove an electric car and outpaced its gas and steam powered completion by nearly 15 minutes! Pictured: Wayne Horsley, Judith Skillen and other members of the Babylon Historical Society, along with John Neukirk from the Pommeroy Foundation who fabricated the signs, were all on hand to mark the occasion, as well as the Great South Bay Amatuer Radio Club, Mayor Mary Adams, and Trustees Frank Seibert and Dominic Bencivenga.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches ﬂames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area

with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Spin The Yard, a boutique store formally based in Huntington Station, has relocated to 1529 Straight Path Road in Wyandanch—the owner’s hometown—helping Mr. Certain’s business grow while also revitalizing a vacant and blighted storefront. Spin the Yard is more than a business as it also serves as an unofficial institution assisting financially and mentally struggling residents while supporting many other community initiatives such as helping distressed families and individuals coming out of prison. This communityfirst mentality is shared by the program’s additional efforts to create the START Resource Center, also located

at 1529 Straight Path Road. This center was launched to provide a multitude of transitional services for those with a history of incarceration, such as substance abuse treatment, transportation, educational opportunities, and jobs assistance. The START Center has been funded by a $40,000 grant from AT&T as well as a $25,000 Economic Inclusion Initiative grant from the Town of Babylon. “We could not be more honored with this opportunity to open up here in the Town of Babylon,” said William Certain, owner of Spin The Yard. “Many business owners are looking for a fresh start, and to be able to have access to these resources is a true blessing. On Sunday, May 16th, the Town of Babylon Volunteer Fireman’s Association hosted their annual memorial ceremony at the firefighters monument on the front lawn of Babylon Town Hall. Representatives from all

eleven fire departments within the Town were present to honor their fallen brethren. A single belled tolled as the names of firefighters lost in both 2019 and 2020 were read, as last year’s ceremony was unfortunately canceled

due to COVID-19. Of special note during the ceremony were those volunteers lost to COVID-19, as well as the line of duty deaths suffered by the North Amityville and East Farmingdale Fire Companies.

1st PRECINCT BROTHERHOOD HOSTS MEMORIAL – On Thursday, May 13th, the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Precinct Brotherhood hosted its annual memorial ceremony. The front lawn of the Precinct along Route 109 was adorned with a sea of American Flags blowing in the wind while Police Department officials payed homage to their fallen brothers and sisters. In addition to First Precinct patrol and specialized officers were representatives from police headquarters, local government officials, and the First Precinct Explorers - a youth organization for teenagers interested in serving their communities.
