ifth-grade girls at South Bay Elementary School learned about growing up in the 1700s during an American Girl doll-themed afterschool special program. Facilitated by school psychologist Laure Loughlin, the event began with a movie about a young girl, Felicity, growing up in the 1700s, when the movement toward breaking away from British rule was growing. The students learned about loyalty, independence and tea taxes.

New Arrivals Heather Paganica’s thirdgrade classroom at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District is brimming with hands-on learning activities as students are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the duck eggs they have been incubating for the last month. For the past five years, Ms. Paganica has been traveling to a farm on eastern Long

Island and bringing back duck eggs that are almost ready to hatch for the classroom. Students have been learning about ducks, how they form in their eggs and have the opportunity to watch the ducklings emerge from their shells along with their first few days of life. But after the farm closed last year, Ms. Paganica located a new farm that could get

As part of a statewide initiative designed to promote the importance of parks and outdoor activities, fourth-graders at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District had free passes for admission to state parks printed for themselves and their families. The program, termed “Every Kid in a Park,”

grants every fourth-grader in the state free park access for the entire spring and summer seasons. To showcase their support for the program, Parliament Place faculty members printed the passes and spoke to the students about the importance of nature and the outdoors. Babylon Junior-Senior High School research students recently competed at the Long Island Science Congress at St. Anthony’s High School. Four total projects represented Babylon in both the biology and environmental science categories. The research conducted by Freddy Nocella and Sneha Kumar earned a High Honors award for placing in the

top 15 percent of more than 2,000 participants in the fair. Their project, “The use of clove and neem oil as a natural repellent against Acyrthosiphon pisum on Pisum sativum,” focused on using essential oils in home gardens to repel damaging pests while maintaining the health of the plants and the people who will eventually consume them.

Lights Camera Learning Fifth- and sixth-grade students at Babylon Memorial Grade School in the Babylon School District had the opportunity to hone their communication, technology and editing skills this school year by taking part in the Broadcast Club. The new club launched in November and more than two dozen students participated in the year’s

first broadcasts. The two grades worked separately, with sixth grade working on broadcasts through March followed by fifthgrade broadcasts running through the end of the year. Headed by adviser and Babylon Memorial Grade School technology teacher Danielle Weiss, the club members were tasked with conceptualizing their

segments, researching their topics, conducting interviews, working the camera, laying pictures on a green screen and editing footage. BBC broadcasts included segments like school news, teacher words of wisdom, movie reviews, weather and sports. Babylon Broadcast Club segments can be found on Babylon School District’s Vimeo channel.

History Comes to Life Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-graders had a chance bring history back to life when they dressed up as influential figures during the fifth-grade wax museum on May 11th. Students chose a historical figure to research and study important facts about their life. The fifth-graders dressed as the historical person and remained still

as if a wax figure. When their activation button was pushed, the figures came to life and told the visitors about their significance in history. Some of the famous individuals included Helen Keller, Amelia Earhart, Theodore Roosevelt, Jim Henson, Daniel Boone and Neil Armstrong. The hands-on, interactive event was the

culminating activity in the grade’s biography unit. The museum was open to fourth-grade students, who were invited to tour the different classrooms. Not only did the wax museum help fifthgrade students with their writing, research and communication skills, it provided them the opportunity to preview the curriculum for next year.

Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

The Town of Babylon has spent the last two weeks collecting emergency supplies to be sent down to Ecuador to aid in the country’s recovery from a devastating earthquake. To date, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake has caused over 600 deaths, more than 12,000 injuries, and nearly 200,000 citizens are now homeless. Recalling the charitable help that the Town received

following Superstorm Sandy, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez have spearheaded this effort as a way to “pay it forward.” The Town has been in contact with the Quito Fire Department, one of the organizations leading the relief effort in Ecuador. Thanks to the generosity of its residents, the Town collected more than a

dozen large boxes of nonperishable food items, gloves, elbow and knee pads, flashlights, and blankets. Early next week, the Town of Babylon Department of Public Works will transport the supplies to the Consulate General of Ecuador in New York City, where they will then be shipped to the Quito Fire Department.

Talent on Display Students at William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School in the North Babylon School District participated in the 2016 Variety Show, showcasing their remarkable talents in singing, dancing and acting for their peers and teachers. The show, which was emceed by Nailea Green, Neca Myers, Gianna Oliva and Jake Stateman, featured students performing a variety of popular or classic songs, including “Uptown Funk,” “Eye of the Tiger,” and “Where Are You Now?” The program served as an entertaining forum for students to display their performing arts skills.

Lesson in History Fifth-grade girls at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District learned about growing up in the 1700s during an American Girl doll-themed afterschool special program on May 6th. Facilitated by South Bay school psychologist Laure Loughlin, the event began with a movie about a young girl, Felicity, growing up in the 1700s, when the movement toward breaking away from British rule was growing. The students learned about loyalty, independence and the taxes on tea. They also enjoyed a tea party and spoke about the clothing styles during this time period, which Ms. Loughlin learned from a historian at an American Girl event in New York City. The fifthgraders were also able to see period carriages, beds, nightstands and accessories, as well as a dining table and different tea sets.

Babylon Junior-Senior High School science research teacher Claire Birone was recognized at the inaugural “Teachers of Excellence” Awards Ceremony sponsored by New York State Sen. Phil Boyle on May 5th. Ms. Birone, who as nominated by Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi, shares her love of teaching as she continuously strives to promote research in science education and the communication of knowledge generated by the research. A graduate from Siena College with a Bachelor of Science in biology, Ms. Birone first taught biotechnology for several years until becoming a high school teacher. She went on to complete her master’s degree at Stony Brook University.

She is certified in both biology and chemistry and spent many summers working at Brookhaven National Laboratory as well as conducting her own research in the Costa Rican rainforest. Coming back to Babylon Junior-Senior High School, she was soon the driving force behind starting the district’s popular science research program. Students as young as eighth grade can enter into the program, and many who matriculate go on to study research in their post-secondary years. Throughout the years, the research pathway has grown considerably, where serious high school science research students have been conducting handson research projects on a variety of complex topics. In addition, Ms. Birone enhances the research program experience with multiple opportunities for her students to work in the field alongside practitioners. Whether it is ongoing visitations and collaborative study while at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, going behind the scenes at Stony Brook University’s Cancer Research Center or inviting world-renowned
