Scholarly Achievements State Championships for the second year running. The varsity gymnastics team was honored for being named runners-up in this year’s Suffolk County Championships. Additionally, the team was recognized as an All-American Team by the National High School Gymnastics Association. Student-athletes Heather Falconer, Sarah Franklin, Kristen Murray and Alexandra Singleton were named Academic All-American athletes based not only on their superior athletic skills, but also for maintaining a GPA above 3.5.
Babylon School District art teachers Patricia Stork and Cheryl Schweider introduced their talented art students who recently returned from their trip to Saratoga Springs, New York for the 2017 Olympics of the Visual Arts. They were able to display their work to the Babylon community, which included a beautiful carousel Pegasus dress made entirely of paper materials and a “Tree of Life” sculpture based on the works of renowned artist Gustav Klimt.

Career Fair West Babylon Senior High School held a career fair on May 12th featuring more than 20 career opportunities from law enforcement, manufacturing, nursing, sales, technology and real estate. The fair was organized and coordinated by West Babylon Senior High School business education teachers Colleen
Kilgus and Katharine Reilly-Johnson. Approximately 500 students attended the career fair where they learned about these careers through small group sessions. Some students also completed job applications for local businesses offering part-time employment opportunities.

The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Student/Teacher Talent Show The Babylon JuniorSenior High School Foreign Language Honor Society recently hosted the first student/teacher talent show, featuring teachers showcasing their talents alongside students in an effort to raise funds for the Promoting Health in Haiti organization. Throughout the course of the evening, 10 teachers took to the stage alongside the talented students to sing, dance, perform
musical numbers and recite poetry. Babylon Junior-Senior Art School teacher Cheryl Schweider and the National Art Honor Society students also created “Home for Haiti” magnets and sold them to the community for additional fundraising purposes. According to their website, the Promoting Health in Haiti organization seeks to improve health in the
island country through enhancing nursing education and knowledge. With the combined efforts of so many volunteers, the community raised more than $1,500 for the organization. As a means of expressing her gratitude, the president of PHH shared a video message with the students and thanked them for their help.

Accomplished Musicians Based on their musical talents Babylon JuniorSenior High School studentmusicians earned tremendous success during their recent trip to Williamsburg, Virginia for the WorldStrides OnStage music competition. The concert band earned a silver rating, while the jazz band, symphonic winds, concert choir, chordettes and senior high orchestra each earned a gold rating. Lindsay was chosen based on her contribution to the music program, which transcends the making of music, as she represents

Additionally, the entire department won the Festival Sweepstakes Award. To qualify for this honor, schools must enter one choral group, one instrumental group, and a third group of their choice. Utilizing the Spanish Language Students enrolled in Spanish language classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School are currently expanding their knowledge of the global language in the classroom. Ninth-grade Spanish II students recently completed a unit in which they learned how to give directions and explain where things are located using multiple prepositions. The students wrote letters to imaginary Spanish-speaking students visiting Babylon for the first time to help them get around town, complete with recommendations for the best food and pastimes within the community. Additionally, 11thgrade Spanish IV students researched Hispanic artists and created presentations that included a short biography of the artist, plus critiques of two of his/ her works. Their findings were then presented to the class using a variety of web-based programs.

Approximately 200 students from West Babylon Senior High School were recognized on May 15th at the school’s annual Principal’s Achievement Awards ceremony. After welcoming students and their invited guests, West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo presented each of the department

Awards were presented in the areas of art, business, family & consumer science, technology, English, foreign language, health & physical education, mathematics, music, science, social studies, vocational education and leadership.
