Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor active,
reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service of their country. • Help Veterans of Foreign Wars distribute red poppies as a visual reminder of the military’s efforts. • Volunteer at a veterans’ hospital or visit a wounded veteran at home. • Offer financial, legal or career expertise through the Corporation for National & Community Service (serve. gov). • Help to maintain the veteran area of a nearby cemetery. Place flags on all of the graves. • Befriend military families who frequently relocate, making a concerted effort to welcome them into your community. • Educate children about past wars and the services the military provides. • Visit a military museum or historic site. • Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm local time for one minute. • Post a message to the troops at the USO website (uso.org).

Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present. From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a
way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. If you want to meet a B.A.C.A. representative and find out additional information on their organization you can attend one of the following upcoming events, where B.A.C.A. will have a tent set up with brochures and more: Alive After Five: Thursday, June 27, 2019 in Patchogue. The Great South Bay Music Festival: Saturday, July 20, 2019 and Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Patchogue. If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. If you want to make a donation to the Long Island Chapter directly, please contact the Long Island BACA Vice President and Public Relations Officer, Big D at bigd@li-ny.bacaworld.org.
Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Agape Community Church believes community support is crucial to helping these children. Donations of any size are welcome. GOOD DEEDS - Babylon Memorial Grade School Student Council members recently went on a field trip to benefit those in need as part of the “Kids United Against Hunger” initiative. Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s National English Honor Society recently hosted the inaugural “Afternoon of Storytime and Crafts” on April 15, as younger district students were invited to attend the classroom setting for an afternoon filled with literary fun. Due to the efforts of
senior Nick Buonagura, along with English teachers Joan Johanson and Barbara Small, the students were given ample time to engage in a number of crafts and activities, and were even provided with a snack. The crafts included listing words that coordinated with the five letters which make
up “April,” and decorating plates with a lovely spring theme. Prior to the student’s dismissal, Nick engaged everyone in a story time session as he read aloud from “Hurray for Spring!” by Patricia Hubbell, bringing smiles to the faces of all attendees.

The Babylon School District is pleased to announce that four of Babylon’s students were awarded scholarship monies at the Town of Babylon’s and Covantage EcoTech’s Scholarship Contest during their annual Earth Day celebration held on May 4. The program, which is open to any student residing within the Town of Babylon, focuses on scientific research done in the fields of sustainable energy or environmental-
based research. Babylon Junior Senior High School 11th graders Erin Corcoran, Madaline Graham and Nicole Santucci earned a $100 scholarship for “The Effect of Different Concentrations of Oxybenzone on Ulva lactuca.” Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth grader Olivia Muller earned a $175 scholarship for investigating, “Which material biodegrades the fastest in salt water?,” which addressed the environmental impact
