s part of the grade level’s compact curriculum, Babylon Memorial Grade School fifthgraders from Rayna Awerlein’s and Chris Tordy’s classes recently received an enriching lesson on the environment and the importance of recycling. Working with Brooklynbased architecture firm Studio KCA, the students helped to create part of an outdoor pavilion made of 53,780 plastic bottles.

This is a perfect time to take the course, right at the beginning of another boating season. In addition to enhancing your boating and safety skills, many boat owners also receive boat insurance discounts for successfully completing the course. This course is taught by New York State Certified volunteer instructors of the United States Power Squadrons. “The Squadron” is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have already taught over three million students how to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. The course is offered to Adults and Young Boaters (from 10 years old and older) in over 500 local areas nationwide. Repurposing Recyclables As part of the grade level’s compact curriculum, and with an eye towards 21st-century learning skills, Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-graders from Rayna Awerlein’s and Chris Tordy’s classes recently received an enriching lesson on the environment and the importance of recycling. Working with Brooklynbased architecture firm
Studio KCA, the students helped to create part of an outdoor pavilion made of 53,780 plastic bottles, the number of water bottles disposed of each hour in New York City. Out of the 200 designers who submitted proposals, Studio KCA was chosen to create this art pavilion on Governors Island based on their design/concept submission to the City
of Dreams Competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects New York, the Committee for Emerging New York Architects, the Structural Engineers Association and the not-for-profit Arts Organization. The finished project, which will be approximately 40 feet by 18 feet by 15 feet and include the fifth-graders’ handiwork, will serve as
the backdrop for this year’s summer arts events at Governors Island. After collecting more than 4,000 bottles, the two classes helped bring the firm’s “Head in the Clouds” pavilion design to life. Using mesh wire and netting, the students worked with the architects to weave in the recyclable materials and add bluecolored water for accents
where appropriate. “This project served as a very visual reminder about the importance of helping the environment, in particular recycling,” stated Ms. Awerlein, whose son, a former Babylon Memorial student, is a member of the firm. “With our compact curriculum approach to teaching,” she continued, “we are always looking for ways
to provide enrichment to our students, and with our 21st-century learning standards, a great deal of attention is paid toward learning collaboratively. This project provided both of those educational benefits.” As a special thank-you for all of their hard work, students will receive a reusable filter water bottle.

What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining
mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

The West Babylon Beautification Society recently delivered 200 Knockout Rose bushes to West Babylon residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. Volunteers from the group walked doorto-door handing out the roses with attached instructions. The roses were a donation from Star Roses & Plants, a California company. The donation was procured by Mary Jo Poldino of the Beautification Society. Knockout Roses are a sturdy, summer-long flowering bush. They are currently used in gardens along roadways and are a main plant in the Beautification’s Windmill garden on Route 109. They need little care and will last years. It is the Society’s hope that these roses will become a lasting symbol to the homeowners of a bright and strong future.

biodiversity of the lake. The unit of study both implemented the newly released Next Generation Science Standards and incorporated Common Core reading and math skills. In class, the students created leaf packets, which were comprised of nylon mesh bags full of dried leaves. In follow-up classes, the students placed these packs in the lake, where they acted as habitats for organisms. After several days, the students retrieved their packs and began investigating the kinds of organisms found within them. Using keys to identify organisms and supplemental resources such as readings, diagrams and sorting cards, the students grouped and classified the organisms and described their interactions with the abiotic and biotic environment before assessing the current state of Argyle Lake’s biodiversity. “This was a challenging but fun unit,” said teacher Mary Beth Schappert. “The field testing technique that we are using – the placement of leaf packs at the bottom of the lake – is new to field biologists and ecologists. It gained popularity last year when scientists used leaf packs to study the effects of the transoceanic highway corridor construction in South America on freshwater rivers and streams. The goal of the lesson is to teach the students about the importance of local biodiversity issues and also promote enthusiasm for science research.”

Sydney’s submission was a historical fiction story set during WWII. As a first-place winner, Sydney will be honored at an awards celebration in June. Members of the Babylon community have been checking their mail to see whether their junior or senior high students have received invitations to the Babylon Teachers Association Scholastic Awards Dessert Buffet. On Tuesday, June 4th, at 7 p.m., the Babylon Teachers’ Association will sponsor its 38th annual presentation to those students in the Junior-Senior High School with the highest academic achievements. The reception, given in the tradition of honoring those who have devoted themselves to academic pursuits, will take place at the Huntington Hilton. Roughly 80 students from
grades seven through twelve and their families will be invited to attend, and the selected students will be honored with certificates of academic merit in all disciplines. In addition, the two students with the highest average (one in the junior high and one in the senior high division) will be awarded general excellence plaques. Lastly, eight monetary awards will be given to graduating seniors for their commitment, social responsibility, and scholarship in memory of eight teachers who exemplified these qualities during their many years of service to the Babylon UFSD. The Scholastic Awards Dinner is chaired by Anne May, teacher at Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Committee members also include Elizabeth Barry, Linda Fama, Jane Herbst, Laura Jayne, Tracy Lesnick, Frank Mancuso, Christian Murphy, Barbara O’Halloran, Marie Poelker, James Schappert, Valerie Schultheis, Lauren Shanks, and Richard Villaneuva. The evening promises to be entertaining as always, conducted with the emcee talents of Richard Villaneuva, science teacher at Babylon Junior-Senior High School. The guest speaker for the evening is Edward Augustine, retired Babylon High School guidance counselor and the former “Voice of Babylon” at athletic competitions. Once again, the Babylon Teachers’ Association shows its commitment to quality education and service to their students and the Babylon community.
