Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I

don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. The first annual eSchoolData Login Page Art Contest was a resounding success, with over two dozen entries received. The contest runs regionally in NY over the course of the school year to promote as much student participation as possible. School districts in Suffolk County were the latest to complete the contest and will be followed by eSchoolData districts in the Western New York region. The Northeast region was the first area scheduled and was completed in December of 2014 followed by districts in Nassau and Westchester Counties. Participating districts’ initial entries were accepted from February 2015 through April 2015. After careful consideration, the voting committee selected the First, Second and Third Place winners below:

Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently announced the winners of the 2015 Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarships at the Town of Babylon’s Annual Earth Day Celebration, where sixth grader Ethan Schubart of Babylon Memorial Grade School was awarded the first place prize of $1,000 for his project researching the effect that gas powered leaf blowers have on air quality. Ethan was praised by Supervisor Schaffer and Covanta’s Mark O’Brien for his dedicated research and displaying substantial knowledge on the subject. Joining Supervisor Schaffer were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, New York State Senator Michael Venditto, Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and Assistant Deputy Suffolk County Executive Tim Sini. The Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarship contest is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta Energy, which operates the energyfrom-waste facility in West Babylon. Submitted by Denise M. Poveromo... My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

Safe Driving Activist West Babylon Senior High School student and Students Against Destructive Decisions President Samantha Mammarella is the recipient of the Suffolk County High School Principals Association/ Allstate Safe-Driving Award for her determined efforts to raise awareness of distracted driving. She was recently honored for her efforts during the SCHSPA luncheon in April. Mammarella has been an active member of SADD for the past four years, having participated in the Halloween Party event to encourage safe driving.

Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth-grade students tapped into their creative sides as they worked to transformed discarded items into wearable runway fashions for the Students of Long Island Maker Expo “Trash to Fashion” event. The project, which called

for students to deploy various STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) skills, focused on creating outfits made from such things as Doritos bags, soda cans and plastic tablecloths. The students worked in small groups and created approximately

On this day, students are taken out of the class, their

faces painted white and their tombstone hung in the hall, to represent an unsafe driving death. The escorting of students out of their classes provides non-participating students with a powerful display of the consequences of drunk driving, SADD advisor Chris Jonasson explained. “I believe that kids are really starting to see the importance and understand the effects of safe driving,” Samantha said. “We show students that it is not just their life they’re going to impact and possibly save, but many others.”

Second-graders at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District visited the Nassau County of Museum of Fine Art for a viewing of the “Out of the Vault” exhibit. As part of the visit, students visited four separate rooms in the museum, each of which featured a different artist or style of art, such as pop art, abstract expressionism, landscape paintings and animal drawings by John James Audobon. Long

Island University CW Post graduate students in art education and fine arts, led by professor Dr. Donna Tuman, designed ageappropriate activities for the Parliament students’ visits to each room. Activities included language arts, which students used to describe feelings evoked by looking at a colorful abstract painting and naming geometric shapes used to create a sculpture. In another activity, students were tasked with making

animal sounds and movements to mimic the animals in paintings, in addition to guided drawing exercises about students’ interpretations of the art on display. “No one ever took the time to help us, or let us know what could be done to make our lives a little easier as Nick gets older [until we came to St. Mary’s]. Everyone should know what a great rehab and hospital you are!” These are words from a grateful grandmother expressing her gratitude for St. Mary’s life-affirming work. Her name is Barbara and her grandson is Nicholas Holman, a brave and bright-eyed 7 year-old who was born with multiple developmental delays. Nicholas does not walk or talk and he requires multiple therapies to keep him healthy. Despite his medical challenges, he is a happy little boy who loves to watch Handy Manny, attends school, plays

baseball, and lives at home with his family. In February 2015, Nicholas’ health was seriously jeopardized when a virus attacked his brain, causing seizures and a high fever. Weakened from the virus, he was unable to eat and was placed on a feeding tube. It was then that doctors recommended St. Mary’s Hospital for Children for his long-term recovery. At St. Mary’s, New York State’s largest provider of long-term care for children with complex medical conditions, Nicholas received intensive rehabilitation including physical, occupational, and feeding therapy. The staff at St. Mary’s showered him with encouragement, love, and care as he gradually regained his strength. His condition improved significantly, so much in fact that when team members from the NY Islanders came for a hospital visit, he was one of the first in line to greet them and smile for photos. After only one month Nicholas was able to return home to his family – with St. Mary’s staff by their

Kindergarten through eighth-grade West Babylon students participated in a fun-filled evening of science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities during the district’s STEM Night. Hosted by the senior high school’s Math and Science Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Science Club, hundreds of students tried their hands at making ice cream, working a

crime scene investigation, learning about robotics and many more activities designed to engage young students’ interests in STEM learning. Senior high school science teacher and STEM Night coordinator Aimee Mendoza said the goal for the evening was for high school students to engage their younger peers in a variety of STEM activities in order to garner interest in STEM subjects. “What was really

STEM Night awesome was that my high school students had the opportunity to share in their younger peers’ love of learning, which seemed to reopen their eyes to the excitement I am sure most of them had in their elementary school years,” Mendoza said. “They have been approaching me every day and saying how much fun they had teaching and watching the younger students learn.”

Fifth-graders at Woods Road Elementary School in the North Babylon School District participated in interactive activities to study sound energy, and how it behaves in solids, liquids and gasses. Students learned about wavelengths, amplitudes, crests and troughs as part of a science residency

workshop conducted by special guest Paul Rodriguez. They participated in handson activities designed to demonstrate how different sounds are emitted through several mediums, and how the sounds can be manipulated. Activities included cutting straws in a specific way and

Babylon Elementary School students’ art and music talents were on display during the school’s Spring Art and Music Festival this May. During the event, attendees viewed a myriad of art pieces created by the kindergarten through second-graders.

The selections included one-point perspective farm photos, surrealism eyes and a showcase of the traditional Japanese method of fish printing “Gyotaku.” With the help of technology, attendees were able to scan a QR code to hear the students speak about their favorite pieces

Inaugural Class Graduates The inaugural class of Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, a group of 30 students who helped pioneer a new approach to medical education, graduated Monday at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse. “This is an historic day,” said Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz. “Four years ago, this gifted group of young men and women began a groundbreaking journey at a new medical school with a unique curriculum that challenges convention. Today, they graduate not just as doctors, but as innovators and leaders who will transform their profession for decades to come.” Established in 2008, the School of Medicine is the first allopathic medical school to open in New York State in more than 40 years. The institution has 2,200 faculty and approximately 280 students, a roster that is expected to grow to 400 by 2016. The school’s innovative curriculum combines basic science with clinical experience from the first day of a student’s training, focusing on patient interaction, interdisciplinary teamwork and community service. Among the innovations is training of all first-year medical students as emergency medical technicians whoride with North Shore-LIJ Health System ambulance crews. “Every graduating class is special, but a medical school’s charter class is truly distinctive,” said Lawrence G. Smith, MD, MACP, founding dean of the School of Medicine. “These students are confident self-starters whose participation helped us to shape and refine the cutting-edge curriculum that would make the School of Medicine a leading center for medical education in the

21st century.” The graduation of the charter class is the crowning achievement in a year of milestones for the School of Medicine, including opening a new state-of-the-art facility, earning full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), and participation in its first Match Day, which saw 100 percent of the graduating class placed in residencies at

some of the most prestigious institutions in the nation. “Monday was the culmination of many hopes and dreams, struggles and success – for our medical students, their families, for Hofstra University and the North Shore-LIJ Health System,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “We are beaming with pride for the first graduates of the first new allopathic medical school in New York state in more than 40 years.” Following their commencement, the newly minted

physicians will start their post-graduate work at elite institutions across the country, including North ShoreLIJ hospitals. “I think we all realized the potential risks and benefits of being at a new medical school, and some of us were more apprehensive than others,” said Daniel Ohngemach, a member of the charter class who will train for a year in internal medicine before beginning a residency in radiology at North ShoreLIJ Health System. “But I knew that if I stayed true to myself, I would graduate a well-trained physician.” AJ Blood, a fellow graduate and past president of student government, agreed. “I looked at the track record of these institutions [North Shore-LIJ and Hofstra University] and the leadership brought in to begin the School of Medicine, and I saw an amazing opportunity,” said Blood, who is heading to Duke University to train in internal medicine. “I knew that far from a risk, I was being offered a chance to get in at the ground floor of the ‘Google’ of medical schools.” Said Samantha Ruff, who is looking forward to training in surgery at North Shore-LIJ: “The faculty and staff are incredibly supportive and engaged in the students’ development. Throughout my four years, there was never a shortage of faculty ready and willing to support me and my career.” The commencement ceremony also included the bestowing of the Branson Sparks Humanism Award. Sparks, who completed his first year with the charter class, died in 2013.
