Making their Long Island debut at the Bethpage Air Show, are Rob Holland Ultimate Airshows, the Raiders Demonstration Team, the Misty Blues AllWoman Skydiving Team, and the Miss GEICO Speedboat. The Royal Canadian Air Force Supersonic F18 Demonstration Team will be making their second Bethpage Air Show appearance. Another first for this year’s anniversary show is the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach 10th Anniversary App, which will soon be available on iTunes. Available for Androids and iPhones, Bethpage Air show enthusiasts will get up-tothe-minute information on parking field availability, full access to listen to the show live with a WHLI announcer, listen to live aircraft-totower communications from Republic Airport, learn about all of the show’s performers, take, share and comment on photos with other users, easily find Jones Beach Boardwalk vendors and on-site attractions, and more. Also available for the time is the commemorative Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach 10th Anniversary DVD, which will be given away for free at Jones Beach toll booths to the first 1,000 cars to arrive to the air show on Saturday, and at the Bethpage Jones Beach Boardwalk tent on Saturday and Sunday. Then, for a minimum $10 donation, fans can receive a “Rebuilding Long Island Shore to Shore” t-shirt, with all proceeds benefitting United Way of Long Island’s partner program with Bethpage to support Long Island families affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Bethpage Air Show will be held Memorial Day weekend 2013 at Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh, NY, on Saturday, May 25th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 26th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Air Show is free to the public, but the standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected each day upon entry to the State

Surrounded by her proud parents Catherine and James, coach Caitlin LaRocca, Director of Athletics Anthony Spinelli and Assistant Principal Stephen O’Leary,
Kerrin signed the letter indicating that she will attend Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. “It is going to be difficult to leave my family and friends in West Babylon,” Kerrin said. “It helps to know that the Rider team is like a family, so I will still have that feeling of camaraderie that I have experienced over the years here.”

The West Babylon Union Free School District consistently works to do its part for the environment and encourages its students to make responsible choices that will positively impact its carbon footprint. The district recently completed an Energy Performance Contract with the energy service company Ameresco, which will result in an estimated first-year savings of $272,087 for the district. Ameresco has projected that the district’s guaranteed savings over an 18-year period will be approximately $6,561,888. The district has also received LIPA energy efficiency rebates of $320,020 to date, and may receive more. This is a significant amount of money for the district, since the original rebate estimate, when the contract was signed, was only $57,290. The individual schools are doing their part as well. Virtual backpacks and email chains are utilized to conserve paper use, and classrooms, lunchrooms
and staff rooms actively recycle. Last year, students of West Babylon Senior High School, under the advisement of Andrea Montalvo, took part in a project in which they recycled 500 bottles in order to earn the $25 needed to adopt an animal from the World Wildlife Federation. Through their efforts, they were able to adopt a tiger. Continuing the project this year, the students focused on the animal being sponsored by the Bronx Zoo as part of its “Run for the Wild” event in which they raise money for one particular species. This year’s animal is the elephant. In preparation for Earth Day, students gathered bottles with the support of faculty and staff and built a 3-D elephant in the school lobby using the bottles. By doing so, they hoped to raise awareness of the amount of bottles that are used in their school, and how with a little effort, everyone can play a part in saving the planet.

Cycle Study Second-grade students of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District got their hands dirty during a science lesson on the plant cycle. Students explored the parts and growth process of a plant and then put their lessons into action by planting cosmos and zinnias. In addition to the plant cycle, students studied the life cycle of a butterfly and examined five larvae in their classrooms. Their cross-curricular study, which included poetry writing in honor of National Poetry Month, culminated in the release
of the butterflies in the schoolyard. “It is wonderful for the students to take part in these types of handson lessons,” teacher AnnMarie Ayerle. “They provide them with a wonderful opportunity to experience the concepts they’ve learned about in a real-life scenario.” Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. Extending classroom lessons on the importance of developing a lifelong love of reading, kindergarten through second-grade students at Babylon Elementary School in the Babylon School District once again participated in the Parents as Reading Partners program this April. This year’s event was themed “Once Upon a Time…Read Happily Ever After” and called for the students to enjoy books in the genres of nursery rhymes, fairy tales, fables, folk tales and legends. With a schoolwide goal of reading 10,000 books, the students were encouraged to read during free times and nightly with their families over the course of the three-week program. Their weekly progress was charted on a Rapunzel-themed display at the school. Throughout the program, special community and school district visitors read to the students in their classrooms. Students also had the chance to visit the PTA book fair and attend schoolwide events, such as a ballet presentation of Snow White and National Marionette showing of Peter And The Wolf. Additionally, firstgrade students in Leah Weissinger’s class completed a reader’s theater production they called “Fairy Tale Party,” and each Friday the entire school came to school dressed based on a different PARP theme day.
