Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently presented local students with scholarship prizes for their environmental science projects at the Town’s Annual Earth Day Celebration. Joining Supervisor Schaffer in presenting the scholarships were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino. Ten scholarship prizes were presented to thirteen students from schools within the Town of Babylon as part of the annual Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest. This scholarship program is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta, which operates the energy-from-
waste facility in West Babylon. It is designed to encourage students who are doing science fair projects or advanced study projects in environmental science courses to focus on renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative building materials or any other means to reduce global warming and environmental degradation. This year’s contest featured over fifty projects by students from seventh to twelfth grade from school districts across the Town. The top three prizes this year were all claimed from students from Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Two years ago, the school received a sizeable donation from local nursing home owner Theresea Santmann for a dedicated science lab, which has led to projects from the school being showcased as part of exhibits at Brookhaven National Laboratory and
Rockefeller University in New York City. Deputy Superintendent Peter Daly, Principal Al Cirone and teacher Claire Birone were in attendance for the scholarship presentation, where they were honored for their schools great

Running & Winning This spring, 14 students from Diana Simulcki’s social studies classes at North Babylon High School had the opportunity to attend a comprehensive workshop hosted by the League of Women of Huntington Voters. The program, Running and Winning, was designed to introduce the students to politics and public service as viable career choices through dialogues and
discussions with elected public female officials from the Town of Huntington and Suffolk County. During their time at the workshop, the students worked in groups to interview two officials and were also tasked with presenting their own virtual candidate. Each virtual candidate had a personal history, campaign speech, logo and bumper sticker.

The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided through generous donors and great programs like A Day At The Races.

One Of Those Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

As an extra incentive for her students to participate in this year’s Parents As Reading Partners program, North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School Principal Norann McManus added a special principal’s challenge as a reward. If the entire student body, along with their adult reading partners, read more than a combined 70,000 minutes in the month of April,
Mrs. McManus would participate in a challenge as voted upon by the students. With more than 101,000 minutes read, far exceeding their original goal, and all of the challenge votes counted, Mrs. McManus was ready for her challenge. On May 2nd, Mrs. McManus
participated in the pie in the face principal’s challenge. Gathered together on the lawn outside of the gymnasium, the entire student body cheered loudly as the top two readers per grade level pied the principal in the face. “Anything for the kids,” said Mrs. McManus.

Writers Earn Honors As part of their curriculum, Babylon High School 10th grade honors English students have been learning about personal narratives and memoirs throughout this year. With the help of teacher Lisa Drance, the classes have been identifying the differences between the two genres – noting that memoirs are more reflective and hold symbolic meaning, while personal narratives contain a true beginning, middle and end – as well as focusing on the importance of a strong lead, figurative language
and imagery. As part of their writing workshop, the students had the chance to put their lessons into action and created original works based on one of these categories. In an effort to provide authentic learning opportunities about the publishing process and to enable the students to become involved in the larger writing community, the classes were encouraged to submit their completed pieces to a number of online and print outlets. Submissions by
Christina Krisberg and Victoria Buonagura were selected and featured on Teen Ink, the National Council of Teachers of English online publication. Christina’s piece, “Early Morning Hours” received high scores from readers, was given the Editors’ Choice award and featured on the front page of the website’s memoirs section. Victoria’s piece The Distance Between Us was designated with an Editors’ Choice award and also featured on the homepage of the site’s College Essay section.
Literary Lesson Babylon Elementary School students have been engaged in a lesson on literacy and democracy this spring as they participated in the Charlotte Award contest. Named for the main character in E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, the purpose of the Charlotte Award is to encourage students to read outstanding literature and ultimately become lifelong readers. Students all over
New York State have the opportunity to read 10 Charlotte Award nominees in each category and vote for their favorite one. School media specialist Teri Polis read all 10 books with the preschool and kindergarten children and introduced many to the first- and second-graders as well. In addition to taking part in the statewide vote, the students had
the chance to complete several technology- and creative thinking-based projects to review the pieces. The students drew their favorite component of the book and using VoiceThread software recorded a short speech about their favorite aspect of the book. The results of the statewide vote will be released in May.

Words Of Thanks Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-grade students in Nancy Murphy’s and Chris Tordy’s classes helped to honor the 61 veterans taking the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in May by creating letters of appreciation and gratitude. The program, which works to pay tribute to America’s veterans for their sacrifices, transports heroes to D.C. to visit and
reflect at their memorials. The process came about after a class parent – Susan Kenny – delivered a presentation on her family’s work with the Honor Flight. Ms. Kenny spoke with the classes about veterans, what it means to be courageous and brave, and called for the students to reflect on the everyday heroes in their lives. Additionally,
the classes discussed the mail call procedure used in the armed forces and how meaningful it was for the soldiers to receive mail from home. As a part of the gradelevel’s English language arts curriculum, the teachers discussed proper letter writing techniques and assisting the students with crafting their letters.
Jumping For Heart Health North Babylon students at William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School recently showed good character and worked on their physical fitness. Organized by physical education teachers Vinny Innes and Adam Lewis, students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program during their physical education
classes. They learned about the importance of heart health, keeping active and staying fit and eating wellbalanced meals. Coupled with the physical education curriculum, the program allows students to learn about cardiovascular fitness while raising funds for research, educational programs on heart disease, and programs to combat childhood obesity. The Jump Rope for Heart program not only benefits
the students through physical activity, but also allows them to use their critical-thinking skills. The students helped plan and organize the event by securing donations from parents and family members. Over the last eight years, DeLuca students have raised more than $7,500 for the American Heart Association.

To elect four (4) members of the Board of Education of said School District. Three (3) members for three-year terms of office commencing July 1st, 2014 and expiring on June 30th, 2017. One (1) member to fill the balance of the unexpired term of a vacant office commencing upon the election of a qualified candidate and the filing of an oath of office, and expiring on June 30th, 2016. The election of said member for the balance of the unexpired term of the vacant office to be determined by the trustee candidate who receives the fourth largest number of votes.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that applications for absentee ballots will be obtainable during school business hours from the District Clerk beginning April 1st, 2014; completed applications must be received by the District Clerk at least seven (7) days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. Representatives from Town’s Department of Environmental Control were on-hand to showcase the Town’s environmental efforts, including the successful Long Island Green Homes program, the Geiger Lake Park Redevelopment, and storm water management programs. Residents were provided with free “pooper scoopers” and reusable grocery bags made from recycled materials. The Town Animal Shelter was also in attendance with pets from the shelter that are currently looking for their new homes. Several school and community organizations took part in this year’s event, including two groups Suffolk County Community College. The college’s Community Service Club painted, prepared and raffled off residential rain barrels, which collect storm water from roofs for preservation and reuse. Also from Suffolk
County Community College was Phi Theta Kappa, who collected old sneakers for Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program, which recycles athletic shoes for use in inner-city playgrounds and sports courts across the country. Students from North Babylon High School’s Environmental Science program also had a booth to display some of their environmental projects while representatives from the West Babylon Main Street Organization sold plants to residents in honor of Mother’s Day. Also on-hand were businesses and vendors, such as Lowe’s Home Improvement and Vivant Solar, to display their “green” products, some of which were raffled off. Residents were invited to “spin the wheel” at 7-Eleven’s table to win free coffee and food.
