Homeowners who take the do-it-yourself route with electrical work should consider these safety tips, courtesy of the ESFI, before beginning a home electrical project.

This can be accomplished by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel. The experts at the Indiana Electric Cooperative note that the risk for electrocution is signiﬁcant when water comes in contact with electricity. It’s imperative that homeowners do not touch plumbing and gas pipes when performing a DIY electrical project. Professionals know how to work around such pipes while minimizing their risk for electric shock or worse, and homeowners must familiarize themselves with the techniques professionals rely on to stay safe if they intend to begin DIY electrical projects. Homeowners are best served by leaving electrical work to the professionals. Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a Patchoguebased non-profit organization that promotes selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. While much of EOC of Suffolk’s work is concentrated in Suffolk County, it also operates several programs that serve residents of both Suffolk and Nassau counties. One of those bi-county offerings is the organization’s Housing Counseling Services. As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage. Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February. It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.

Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule. Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), in partnership with Colored Colors, present a multilocation, self-guided tour and art exhibit throughout the Town of Babylon. Cafeinspired works created by local artists will be on view at six coffee shops from May 26, 2022 until June 26, 2022. The 2022 Cafe D’Art Tour is supported by public funding provided by Suffolk County. The development of this program was sponsored by the Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation as part of the Babylon Together project. Artists are invited to submit up to three (3) works of art in any medium, inspired by a cafe theme, for consideration to be displayed in local cafes across the Town of Babylon. Information and submission details are available on the BACCA website at https://

www.babylonarts.org/cafed-art-tour. Submissions are free for BACCA members and $20 for non-members. Entries are non-refundable. Submission deadline: Sunday, May 1, 2022 at 11:59PM. On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country. For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide. The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve

lost in combat. The 9 mile ruck is to remember those lost to suicide. The final 4 mile run is dedicated to each runner, so they can celebrate their achievements and reﬂect on some things they have not quit on. As a non-profit organization, Project9line supports veterans by providing avenues for them to communicate their experiences and express themselves through the arts and activities. This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011. If you are looking to participate, you can register online up until May 20, 2022 for $150. If you want to participate, but need the funds to do so, there is a fundraising option that

you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt. Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. JFK School Cuts Ribbon For New Outdoor Classroom On the morning of Monday, April 11th, the staff and students of West Babylon’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School came together with their Parent Teacher Association and Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey to unveil their new outdoor classroom! The ribbon cutting

marked the end of a year’s long project headed by the PTA and Administrators to develop a safe and interactive outdoor learning environment for JFK students. Many of the materials used in the construction of the classroom were donated by local businesses who shared in the belief that

a change in environment could greatly benefit the student experience. Further, the project also included a remodel of the staff lounge, which serves to provide teachers with a relaxing yet technologically sufficient space to best prepare for their work.

Students at Babylon Grade School had a special visit from members of the ALS Ride for Life team during an assembly on April 13. ALS Ride for Life was founded in 1997 as a patient-driven, volunteer organization with the mission of raising research funds to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, while also raising awareness and services for those with the disease.

The organization has since raised more than $10 million On April 13, students and staff at Babylon Grade School wore pajamas to school to “Put ALS to Sleep” and collected donations for the organization. Paul Weisman visited the school to speak to the students about his disease and some of the challenges of ALS. Founder Chris Pendergast started the organization

Troop 399 Eagle Court Of Honor Jimmy White of North Babylon, received his Eagle Scout Award in a Court of Honor ceremony held on March 19, 2022, in North Babylon, NY. Jimmy’s scouting career began when he joined Cub Scout Pack 112 in 2010. He then joined Troop 399 where he has proudly served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Den Chief, and Patrol Leader for his troop. He has earned twenty-six merit badges during his time in Boy Scouts and many additional awards including the Parvuli Dei and Light of Christ

religious Awards. He is Troop 399’s 67th Eagle Scout. The Court of Honor signifies a Boy Scout’s promotion to Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout is achieved through hard work, with the recipient required to have earned at least twenty-one merit badges, demonstrated leadership and had a positive impact on society. Scouts are required to complete a project that benefits their community before ascending into the ranks of Eagle Scout. Jimmy completed his Eagle Scout Project on

11/29/2021. His project was to build a large shed for the Homecoming Farm located on the grounds of the Sisters of St. Dominic Motherhouse in Amityville NY. The Farm is one of the earliest certified organic farms on Long Island and the goal of his project was to give them a place to store some of the larger equipment used to work the farm. Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, NY, and a member of the Sagtikos District of BSA’s Suffolk County Council. It is sponsored

with the mission of teaching people about the disease while riding all over Long Island. Since May is ALS Awareness month, members of ALS Ride for Life plan to ride again while stopping to visit schools across Long Island. Mr. Weisman reminded students in Babylon to “never give up, never lose hope and always be willing to defy the odds.”
