Poetic Celebrations Students and staff at Woods Road Elementary School in the North Babylon School District celebrated National Poetry Month for an entire week in April. The students enjoyed participating in a variety of activities, including Poem in a Pocket Day and Poetry Café, for which the library was transformed

into a forum of poetry readings, music and snacks for students to enjoy. In addition, students were treated to a special visit by poet Darren Sardelli, who spoke about poetry using verses and riddles, and encouraged them to be persistent and follow their dreams. The week offered students the opportunity

Babylon School District, in cooperation with Farmingdale State College, Dowling College and Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, will celebrate Long Island’s young artists at the sixth annual Babylon Art Festival. Emmeline Gaare, Jillian Gaare, Emily Guerra and Chandler McMillan

will receive Awards of Excellence. Honorable Mention awards will be presented to Jake Citarella, Erin MacQuarrie, Jenna Redmond, Anna Romero, Julianna Vota and Emme Ward. Babylon resident and philanthropist Theresa Santmann will provide scholarships for the

award-winning Babylon Junior-Senior High School students. Santmann will also present Babylon School District with a $5,000 check to be used toward improvements and equipment for the art

department. The festival begins on April 29th, at 6 p.m., at Old Town Hall in Babylon, with an awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. The show will run until May 1st.

Student-Scientists Ten students in grades 2-5 at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District completed their science research projects as part of their participation in the annual Kids Inquiry Conference. The students were tasked with demonstrating their understanding of the scientific method by conducting a science experiment. Students completed their projects at home over a period of a few

months, and were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals, in addition to an honorable mention. At a celebratory event, students presented their projects to their peers and received their medals and certificates from Principal Drew Olson and School Science Coordinator Tracy Jacquemain. Second-grader Matthew Coppola and fifth-grader Tyler Schmitt earned gold medals and will be presenting their projects at a regional competition at Brookhaven

National Laboratory. Silver medals were earned by second-grader Spencer Jordan, third-grader Ian Nolan, third-grader Patrick Schmitt, fourthgrader Kathryn Iudica and fifth-grader Dilara Kurnaz. Bronze medals recipients include secondgrader Amaya Carson and fourth-grader Isabella Coppola. There are moments that stay with you. Forever. And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we

often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.

FAMILY MATTERS

Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. Such is the bittersweet nature of life; the great unknown. May we all be so fortunate to have memories worth treasuring along the way.

I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes

sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.
