On Saturday morning, April 8th, 75 teams of students from 25 Catholic elementary schools across Long Island met at Holy Trinity High School for the Diocesan STEM Fair. The students, who had all qualified by being one of the stand-out exhibits in their school’s science fair, came to have their projects judged by a panel of teachers, Holy Trinity Honors Science students and some guest judges. The student teams competed in two categories, representing grades 5 and 6 and those representing grades 7 and 8. The exhibits were judged by 13 teams of three judges, each with a teacher, student and guest judge. Exhibits were evaluated based on their concept, the use of the scientific method to make their analysis, and the overall impression made by the way the experiments were displayed and explained. While all of the contestants rising to this level brought great work, the judges scored the experiments and awarded

North Babylon School District has once again been named a Best Community for Music Education for 2017 by the National Association of Music Merchants and the University of Kansas - the 11th year it has been recognized since 2003. The distinction recognizes districts that demonstrate exceptional commitment and efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum. North Babylon’s music program continued to expand and support student enrichment in several ways this year, and provided students with extensive platforms to showcase their talents. For the first time in the district’s

history, members of the high school’s Select Choir were invited to perform at the White House as part of its Holiday Open House. In addition, the “Electrify Your Strings” concert in January featured nearly 200 students, students performed remarkably at the “Schools Out: North Babylon” halftime show during the Newsday Marching Band Festival, and the drama club’s March production of “Godspell” set the stage for students to captivate audiences’ hearts with their voices and instruments. “This year, we are so honored to be named a NAMM Best Community for Music Education because less than four percent of the programs in

the nation made the list!” said District Director of Arts Dr. Kim LowenborgCoyne. “As research into arts education points out, ‘studying music has intrinsic benefits and is core to learning.’ In consistently funding and supporting our program, our school district and community recognize this connection between music and academics, assuring that such a well-rounded curriculum is always available to all children, regardless of zip code. Visual Olympics Babylon Junior-Senior High School Art Club recently attended the Olympics of the Visual Arts event, held in Saratoga Springs, New York, where students were able to showcase their artistic abilities and complete challenges based on their specific artistic medium. In preparation for their competition, the students worked with art club advisors Cheryl Schweider and Patricia Stork for over the course of 12 weeks to create artwork that would be brought to the Olympics. Some of the projects

they worked on included taking photographs, which portrayed a story in the style of comic book strips, constructing a merry-go-round-themed dress entirely out of paper materials and creating a still-life painting using human hands as the starting point. According to their website, the Olympics of the Visual Arts invites students from across New York State to engage in friendly competition as they participate in a series of problems that require utilizing historical

references, brainstorming, problem-solving and creative solutions. Three Babylon JuniorSenior High School students took home second place in the Drawing category for their project on “The Light at the End of the Tunnel.” “Each of the students did a fantastic job in all of categories, as their time, talent and persistence was evident,” said Patricia Stork. “Congratulations to the Babylon Panthers on a job well done.”

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. Members of the Babylon Junior-Senior High School Leo Club recently hosted their annual “Dinner and a Show” event for local senior citizens, featuring a delicious meal and a special viewing of the Drama Club’s production of “The Pajama Game.” Throughout the course of the evening, guests were served entrées such as pasta dishes, courtesy of Babylon’s Café Il Villaggio, and a delectable

crumb cake whipped up by Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s own Jeanmarie Sheehan. After being escorted to their seats by members of the Leo Club, guests enjoyed the Drama Club’s production of “The Pajama Game,” directed by Babylon School District music teachers Eddie Storey and Jordan Hue. “As part of the Leo Club, our members recognize the importance of giving

back to their community and always do so with enthusiasm,” said Babylon Leo Club co-adviser Lisa Brush. “The students are the heart of this event; they decorate the tables, put together the dinner, serve our guests and even select the music. Fifth-graders at Babylon Memorial Grade School are learning real-life broadcasting and writing skills as they take part in technology teacher Danielle Weis’ afterschool program called the Babylon Broadcasting Club. While attending the club, which meets once per week, students take matters into their own hands as they write, produce and utilize

iPads to film their own segments, incorporating factual information and humorous banter throughout. Bike to Work Parade The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its second annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Parade” on Saturday, April 29th. Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus. The parade will follow a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a route for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles. There will be a festival with prizes for the best costumes and bikes at the end of the parade. The festival leads into Hofstra University’s Dutch festival with food and flower vendors, music and rides for small children. “There are many reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation,

such as biking,” says Car-less Long Island founder and chairwoman, Sylvia Silberger. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive. There are also many Long Islanders who need alternative forms of transportation because they are unable to drive or own their own cars and we all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world.” The bike parade is officially listed as a sister march to the Climate March on Washington that day. Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found

myself in conversations with other Long Islanders who would like to be able to get around without a car, but are frustrated by the danger and inconvenience inherent alternative modes of transportation,” says Silberger. She founded CLLI to counter the “nihilistic feeling that this is just how Long Island is – we are a car-culture and that will never change.” Silberger is optimistic that the Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade will allow Long Islanders who would like Long Island to be a more bike-friendly community realize that they are not alone. Living Legacy Tree A magnificent handcrafted Living Legacy Tree now adorns the LICADD Executive Offices in Westbury. The tree was a brainchild of LICADD staff to honor and memorialize those lost and pay tribute to those dedicated to the field of substance abuse and recovery. Championed by LICADD Board Member, Father Philip Eichner of Kellenberg Memorial High School (KMHS), the tree was designed and created by artisan, Frederick H. Weber of Weber Woods with assistance from the KMHS carpentry department. The striking Living Legacy Tree was crafted using over fifteen varieties of wood from the United States, Africa and South America, including Cherry, White Oak, Padouk and Purpleheart. The result is a mosaic-like pattern and evokes the feeling of many coming together as one - those who have lost their battle and those who continue the work of

recovery and support. The visual message is powerful. The Living Legacy Tree will feature the tribute: “In special recognition of those who have been touched by addiction.” Donors’ names or the name of a loved one, friend or relative, will be engraved and placed on the Tree. LICADD is committed to recognizing every contributor of $1,000 or more on the tree. The generosity of donors to the Legacy Tree will go toward funding both Chemical Dependency Interventions for families in the throes of addiction and the Student Assistance Program (SAP) that provides needed prevention education for students in grades K-12. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to LICADD programming to help those challenged with the ravages of addiction and their families. Donors who have made donations of less than $1,000 are invited to consider increasing their gift to participate in

this special program. Over sixty years ago, LICADD founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, surrounded himself with advocates in the medical and spiritual community as well as generous supporters to begin a national movement towards recovery. Student-Musicans Recognized The April 17th Babylon School District Board of Education Meeting was full of celebrations as the school community honored the vast accomplishments of student-musicians throughout the district. To begin the evening’s recognitions, 26 students from both Babylon JuniorSenior High School and

Babylon Memorial Grade School were presented with commemorative certificates for taking part in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association All-County Music Festival this past March. These student-musicians are chosen to perform in the festival based on musical talent, NYSSMA scores and

teacher recommendations. Additionally, Babylon Junior-Senior High School student-musicians Lindsey Daily and Emma Schubart were celebrated for participating in the SCMEA All-Eastern Music Festival. These two seniors represent the top 5 percent of student-musicians from the east coast.

State of the County Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that he will deliver this year’s State of the County Address at Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J.
