Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

Below are some favorite quotes from past celebrity interviews that demonstrate this very quality. April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are also needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

Coastal Steward Long Island works to preserve and protect Long Island’s precious marine environment through education, preservation and restoration. Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s

The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age.

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

During his visit, Mr. Sardelli recited a number of his original poems from memory, infusing witty literary elements with humorous punchlines which in turn brought upon instant laughter to all in attendance. Prior CUB SCOUTS ACHIEVEMENT - West Babylon’s Pack 104 had 7 Cub Scouts achieve to leaving the students, Mr. Sardelli brought additional laughs to the audience when their Arrow of Light and bridge over to Boy Scouts. Diversity Through Literature North Babylon’s Parliament Place Elementary School highlighted the arts and the multicultural diversity through literature for the school’s International Children’s Book Day celebration on April 4. For the celebration, teachers had guest readers read

trade books on each grade level that represent many different ethnicities. In Ms. Anna Montuori’s class, Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney visited students and read “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” by Hans Christian Andersen. After that, Ms. Montuori’s

students rehearsed a performance for Councilman McSweeney, which they later performed for other students in the building. The performance consisted of students singing songs and reciting poems that reflected the theme of the day.

The Babylon School District would like to extend sincere congratulations toward Babylon JuniorSenior High School student Agnes Goldin for receiving a $5,000 scholarship through Distributive Education Clubs of America in partnership with Hilton based on a submitted application and excellent performances during DECA competitions. Agnes is one of only three students from New York State to receive a DECA scholarship this year, as

DECA and its corporate partners awards more than $300,000 annually in scholarships to students across the nation. Additionally, she is the first Babylon student to have ever received this prestigious award. She will be accepting her award at the International DECA Career Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida on April 30. Agnes has been a member of DECA for four years, maintaining the role as and president for the past two years. She has

been a voting delegate at the New York State DECA Career Conference for four years and was also on the nominations committee during her sophomore year. In addition, Agnes qualified for the International DECA Career conference for three of her four years at Babylon JSHS. “I could not think of a worthier recipient for this award,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School DECA adviser Claire Reilly.

This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory.
