Fifth-graders created a Poetry Walk, writing their favorite works in chalk on the school’s sidewalk, on April 13th. The students shared some of their favorite poems with the Santapogue community.

It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and ﬂower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however ﬂeeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be ﬂooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

Hope for Youth Donation IKEA recently donated $6,000 worth of furniture to local organization Hope For Youth’s Runaway Shelter Program. Hope For Youth’s mission is to facilitate positive change in

the lives of children, adolescents and families in need. Their current programs include longterm residential sites, therapeutic foster care, preventive programs and an OASAS licensed

clinic where Long Island families can access support with ease. The newest program is a runaway shelter for youth aged 12-20 who reside in Suffolk County in need of emergency housing.

Within this program, youth can seek haven from potential neglectful and abusive situations. On-site social workers will coordinate with child protective services, school districts, anti-human

trafficking programs, the local town youth bureaus and parents to ensure the youth are connected with necessary services, both long and short term. The home located in Suffolk County has

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory was on hand at the opening night of S.O.N.I.A.Y.’s spring basketball league, which the Presiding Officer is sponsoring, on April 7th in West Babylon. The league will be known as the “DuWayne Gregory Spring Basketball League.” Saunders Omnipresent Network Inspiring America’s Youth Inc. (S.O.N.I.A.Y.) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization founded in North Babylon that offers structured programs and activities for

students in grades 6-12 as an alternative to engaging in illegal and dangerous activities. Their mission is to provide inspiration and awareness to a culturally and economically diverse population through seminars, mentoring, after-school programs and recreational activities. Fifth-graders at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District culminated their unit on the solar system by videoconferencing with educators from National Aeronautics Space Administration.

The unit included lessons about research using books and online resources, such as NASA Space101; fantasy art, which students created by designing their own planet, moon or sun; and music, which offered students a unique

perspective in the form of various compositions. The videoconference offered students the opportunity to ask an expert in the field questions based on what they have learned throughout the unit.

Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, along with others who participated in this year’s Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce’s Chinese Auction, were treated to a night of fun, great food and networking. The annual event took place at American Legion Post 94’s banquet hall, and it was attended by a variety of elected officials and countless members of the local business community. This year marked the event’s 5th year, and due to the success of its previous installments, much excitement was building beforehand. Not surprisingly, the occasion lived up to all

of the hype with not just impressive attendance, but a wide assortment of products involved in the auction, in addition to the delicacies provided by local merchants. However, it was the spirit of the community coming together to support the Chamber that was the greatest attraction of the evening. “The Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce is an innovative and thriving organization that is deeply committed to the community,” said McCaffrey. “Having annual events like this really brings everyone together to share ideas that will

ultimately improve our quality of life.” Babylon Village has earned a solid reputation as a municipality that is very conducive to small businesses. With the diverse array of shops and restaurants, both residents and visitors can have an exciting day out anytime of the year. Learn to Draw The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is offering art classes for children in grades one through five, to be held at the Babylon Town Hall Annex, 281 Phelps Lane, Room 15, North Babylon. Learn to Draw with Art Teacher Amy begins on Tuesday, May 3rd, from

4:15 to 5:15 p.m. and will run for five weeks. The cost of this class is $63 and includes all supplies. Children are instructed using a step-by-step approach to drawing. They will learn to draw various subject matter, including portraits, landscapes, still life, animals and master

The Music Lovers Club was founded in 1925 to share an interest in and appreciation of music, to extend to others the pleasure derived from and to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians who are seniors in high school and live in the towns of Babylon and Islip. The hope is that these scholarships will help foster the continuation of their musical development. This year, as they celebrate their 90th year, they are proud to say that on Sunday, April 24th, they will be presenting their 66th annual Scholarship Benefit Concert. The performers for the

concert will be this year’s winners. They will join a list of almost 200 other winners from the past 65 years. Following the performance, they will receive their scholarship awards. In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, students at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been reading and celebrating poetry during their class time in

the library. Fifth-graders created a Poetry Walk, writing their favorite works in chalk on the school’s sidewalk, on April 13th. The students shared some of their favorite poems with the

Santapogue community. The sidewalk was chosen as the prime location so other students could see the poems on their way to or from school.

The top 25 students of the North Babylon High School Class of 2016 were honored with a special ceremony before their teachers, administrators and families. Following performances by the school’s choir group, each top student delivered a speech and honored one special teacher that profoundly impacted his/ her high school career. The top 25 students
