Serving Up a Winner Three Babylon JuniorSenior High School students enrolled in Jenna Schwartz’s culinary arts classes, along with one former culinary arts student, were recently awarded a third-place trophy at the Iron Chef Jr. competition held at the Whole Foods Market of Lake Grove. The team, which consisted of Sean Cosgro, Hayley Swaine, Emilie Leibstein and Ms. Schwartz’s former culinary student Sophia
Levine-Aquino, competed against 11 other schools in the high school division to claim their title. Throughout the competition, the team worked collaboratively to create a vegetarian Shepard’s Pie main dish following certain nutritional criteria. They had one hour to prepare ingredients, make the dish and plate the finished product for the judges to taste. Despite being given the mystery
ingredient of raspberries, which was to be incorporated into the dish, the students persevered and created a delicious raspberry sauce which impressed the judges. “I am so proud of my students,” said Ms. Schwartz. “They worked as a team to come up with a creative, healthy and delicious dish and didn’t let the pressure get to them throughout the course of the day.”

Mid-April, and I’ve only missed one class – and yet the dance has taken on a “brand new” vibe each week. There’s something to be said for getting old too. And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

A Stately Honor Robert Moses Middle School eighth-grader Victoria Bonavita was honored at the North Babylon School District March Board of Education meeting following her selection as New York’s top Middle Level Youth Volunteer in the 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.
With elected officials in attendance, Bonavita was presented with an engraved silver medallion by representatives of Prudential Financial, and commended for her outstanding work in animal education. As a result of the tremendous honor, she was also awarded $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
for a series of national recognition events on May 6th through 9th. While there, Bonavita will be considered for a National Honoree title that would award her an additional $5,000, a gold medallion, a crystal trophy for Robert Moses Middle School and a $5,000 grant for the charity of her choice.

songs including “Oh, How Lovely is the Evening,” “Country Ballad” and “Boogie Swing,” and spent the day rehearsing with students from other schools to prepare for the

On Tuesday, March 28th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey presented local businesses owner and community leader Jacqueline DiDonato with the 2017 Suffolk County Women of Distinction Award for the 14th Legislative District. DiDonato is a longtime business owner in Babylon Village, where she opened an affordable, upscale boutique clothing store called Pandemonium in 2005. In addition to being a business owner in Babylon Village, DiDonato is also a
in our community.” DiDonato joined the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce in 2005 and became vice president and then president in 2014, working continually for the village merchants. As president of the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce, she revitalized the village through events such as the annual Springfest, the Old Fashioned Night of Shopping, the Annual Octoberfest, the Chinese Auction and the annual Shopping Crawl. Throughout her years as a chamber member, DiDonato supported Babylon Village small businesses, is a crusader and supporter of AMEX Small Business Saturday and is passionate about Adopt Not Shop and other animal adoption organizations and rescues.
